Why do ?.....

Post by Marc Meakin »

Couldn't think of a better topic heading.
But why do priests and vicars insist on wearing their dog collars outside of their place of work.
I've seen it on loads of TV shows and panel shows.
There was a priest recently who was singing on Britain's Got Talent with his ' dog collar ' on. Why ?
I wouldn't go on in my boiler suit if I was a plumber or my Speedos if I were a lifeguard.

To put people off hitting on them.

I think part of the justification is that they're "always on duty". This made more sense when they'd spend most of the time in the parish, and so could reasonably be approached by a parishioner. It makes less sense now when an Irish priest ends up on BGT.

Interestingly the original purpose of some forms of clerical dress (including dog collars) was to NOT be distinctive, and instead restricted them to a standard style of dress. Over time this becomes either more elaborate or left behind by time, and so the whole point is lost. The vicar of my church at uni did not wear one for this exact reason.

I guess it's a bit like always wearing a wedding ring.

Only if you equate matrimony to work.

Why do people not even notice any more that the term "dog collar" is actually a joke? People say it without any thought of "I'm making a silly joke here".

Though I should point out that Marc used quotes around it.

I wasn't sure if it's offensive to the clergy to say dog collar.
As I don't have an imaginary deity , I'm not up to speed with what goes on in churches these days, unless it's newsworthy.

Also when people are pouring a drink and they say "Say when" and the other person says "When" with no hint that they're being silly.

....weather forecasters always assume that everybody wants blazing sun and scorching hot temperatures? Last week one of them told me the weather over the next few days was going to be "disappointing". Wtf does that mean? I was glad for cooler temperatures and a bit of rain actually. Tell me what you think the weather is going to be doing, not what you think I might happen to feel about it.

..... do TV presenters say 'don't go away' before ad breaks when clearly they are the ones 'going away'
Or worse still 'welcome back' after the ads

Even worse is "We'll see you after the break". I'm pretty confident TV doesn't work like Zoom.

"Tune in at the same time next week". They should say this at the start of the programme instead of at the end, or the viewer may be disappointed to just catch the closing credits.

All that does is show up all his bullshit about trying to "bring the community together, and build the Irish scene" for what it is.

Great show, even if all I remember about it is Zammo's future girlfriend pronouncing Grand Prix as Grand Pricks, and then arguing about it when corrected.

I remember something similar when I was little and pronounced gateaux as Gat Ox.
When corrected I said it was a load of Bollo
