Vegetarianism/Veganism (in the right section!).
Note: Apologies for associating Quorn with CO-events
It feels to me as if vegetarianism/veganism is on the rise, and because the subject interests me, as a former meat-eater who's been veggie for roughly 7 years, I am putting this topic out there enquiring as to whether there are any other veggies or vegans on here; do you feel as if it has benefited you or do you feel as if you may make the transition in the future? Also I am interested to hear if you are against vegetarianism/veganism. Many thanks

Just a personal view. Can't give up meat due to the smell and taste of bacon.
With that said, some of my favourite meals are vegetarian.

I think that's a view, simple as it may be, that many would agree with ☺. How do you think you'd cope if you were told that you had to go without meat for a month, for example?

Not a problem , I did go on a vegetarian diet to lose weight many years ago.

By virtue of being a fussy eater, I am *almost* vegetarian...
Won't eat beef, steak, lamb, pork, bacon, venison, eggs, or any seafood.
It's not an issue of principle, but I am often grateful when a vegetarian option is available.

I wouldn't enjoy going without it for a month, but I reckon I'd be able to just about cope - wouldn't become vegetarian though as I wouldn't want to live without some meat eg bacon butties, spaghetti Bolognese (and no matter how much people might try and convince me: Quorn is NOT a substitute for it).... That said I'm not a huge meat eater either, I don't eat seafood and the meats I eat are pretty much just mince meat, bacon, the odd chicken or beef burger and some roast beef.

Was veggie for 5 years (2008-2013). Literally couldn't tell the difference between real meat and Quorn (or the off brand version thereof) except in the case of sausages.
A lot of people cite bacon as the main reason for eating meat. It's alright but so so overrated imo

Admittedly, I am glad I'm veggie now as there is such a large variety of products available, and do think that Quorn has a lot of good stuff on offer. Yet it still frustrates me how even today some pubs/restaurants aren't specific of whether the meal is veggie-friendly or not and how some staff members don't even know what things like gelatine or rennet even is. Perhaps I'm just being snobby but that's my personal view.

I'm a vegetarian. I've thought about going vegan as well at times, but it seems unlikely at the moment. I think Quorn could get their act together and make more/all of their stuff vegan.
On the gelatine/rennet thing, it seems really odd to me that quite a few people seem to be aware that sweets often have gelatine in so might not be vegetarian, but hardly anyone seems to know about cheese and rennet.

Waitrose seem to have the best range of quality vegetarian products in a high street supermarket.
The Higgidy range is good and their newest chicken tikka masala is the best meat substitute curry I've tasted.
My father in law has recently been diagnosed with gout so he can't eat most meats so whenever I go round for a meal I get something from Waitrose I must admit I was fooled by the Tikka Massala as I thought it was chicken

Additionally, Sainsbury's have a good range of products, too and was looking at their selection on Friday, but it is not near enough for us to do a weekly shop there. Additionally, my Dad decided to play a Christmas prank on my grandparents when we made a meal there, by giving them a Quorn Roast and telling them that it was proper meat, which they fell for .

How do vegans feel about the fact that planes have to test engines for bird strike by firing chickens at the engines?

I'm not convinced vegans DO feel... they seem to become programmed to ramble about replacement cheese and share PETA posts on Facebook shortly after changing... As a veggie, I really don't like the policy, but something has to be done to test bird strikes.

I see it as a big continuum with killing as many animals as you possibly can at one end, and doing everything you posibly can to avoid animal suffering at the other. As a vegetarian, I'm perfectly well aware that I could go further along the continuum, but so could vegans. So while firing chickens at engines doesn't exactly sound pleasant, I'm not going to go crazy over the fact I have flown in aeroplanes after this revelation.
(Though as a vegetarian and not a vegan, your thing wasn't really aimed at me.)
