Re: Welcome! - Post here first
Hi all. I'm Phil Reynolds and I live in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, UK. Having discovered this board as a result of Charlie's recent appearances on the show, I came here today to point out Susie's missed 8 in round 2 (MASTERLY) and Carol's easy miss in round 5, but by the time my registration had been approved, everyone else had beaten me to it. I'll try to be less tardy in future.
I've not appeared on Countdown so far (I applied a few years ago but was unsuccessful at the audition). I have been on Brainteaser, Weakest Link and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? and will probably reapply to Countdown at some point. My experiences on WL and WWTBAM? are described in exhaustive detail on my website.
Be gentle with me!

Hi, my name is Oliver and I am 14 years old. I enjoy sport, namely running(crosscountry and track+field), rowing, badminton and table tennis. I applied to be a contestant on Countdown 4 weeks ago but I haven't had a reply yet. I used to enjoy it as a young child (my first memory of it was Julian Fell's score of 146) but I stopped watching. However, I have regained interest in the show after watching Kai Laddiman's octochamp run and now it has become one of my many obsessions
Hopefully you guys will see me on the show soon

Thanks for the welcome Jason. I have to say that winning WL (especially such a substantial sum for that show) was one of the best experiences of my life. Not sure what that says about me!Jason Larsen wrote:How did it feel to win on The Weakest LinK?

Hi:
I'm Mike Priestley. I appeared on Countdown in July 2007 & won three games before losing to an eventual semi-finalist.
I actually went to school with a winner of a previous (long ago) series: Clive Spate.
I have been watching Countdown since it started & also watched Richard before that & remember watching his ferret incident live.

Hello all,
Hailing from Eindhoven, the Netherlands, I am a 39 year old male, working as a data storage specialist with a large ICT company.
In the '80s I watched every episode of a show on Dutch television, named Cijfers en Letters.
Then in the '90s - the Dutch show no longer ran - I noticed the French (and, as I soon found out, original) version, Des chiffres et des lettres on TV5. While I enjoyed watching it, my French was (and is) nowhere near good enough to play along with the word game - I think I found a six letter word just once.
Three months ago I was discussing some BBC-shows with two British co-workers. One of them mentioned that he thought I would like this show called Countdown. I had heard that name before, when Carol Vorderman was on Strictly Come Dancing, but had no idea what it was about, since Channel 4 and such are not available on this side of the North Sea.
I decided to check it out on the internet and of course soon realized this was basically my old favourite, but this time in a language I can at least sometimes find longer words in. Since then I have watched all episodes I could get my hands on, including the ones Charlie Reams was in.
From what I've seen in my first few hours of browsing on here, I am going to enjoy these forums!

Hi I learned about this site after your appearance on Countdown Charlie. I always say me and my other half would do well if we could enter as a team. He normally does beter than me at the letters and I beat him in the numbers. I would LOVE to have the courage to enter but don;t want to be the forst person to go on and get 0 points!!!

In the old format of a 9-round game, two contestants actually scored 0 points in their games. They were John Brooks (Series 13) and Sylvia Pitman (Series 39).

Re: Welcome! - Post here first
Hello!!! I can't believe that you've existed since January, and I've only just found you! And as the end of era approaches too - doh!
I'm a lifelong fan of Countdown, and I'm not looking forward to Carol leaving. I did apply for her job, as I figured that I'd rather it goes to someone who adores her and the show, rather than someone who's only trying to move up the TV ladder, but I've heard nothing, so it's obviously not meant to be. But on the plus side, I can just cut and paste a few bits from my application form to introduce myself.
I have watched and loved Countdown since the very first episode. On that day at school, I was so hyper and excited about the launch of a new channel that I was chucked out of the classroom for the first time in my life! I went home, I watched the show and I was hooked! Countdown has been a part of my life ever since – I can picture myself in every home I’ve lived in watching the show.
My favourite part of the show has always been the numbers game. I write them down and at the end of the show I mix the targets up, just to make the numbers fun last longer! Does anyone else do this? This obviously now takes twice as long as it did when there was only two numbers games per show. I’m not sure why I’m good at arithmetic as I wasn't particularly studious at school, but it's probably down to what Carol describes as “The Scottish sums system… they’re taught them differently up there.” I’ve not found out in what way yet, but I do know that I use my fingers and look for and see patterns in a way that my English friends don’t. I’m always proud of myself when I get a numbers solution that Carol doesn’t (which is happening more than usual recently - is she starting to give up?), and just watch and learn when it’s vice versa!
Aside from Countdown, my main interests are animal rights, Fair Trade and ethical consumerism, diet and fitness, music, particularly Blondie, and films. Originally from Edinburgh, I live in Brighton with my husband, son and two cats.
I'm so pleased to find that this place exists - I need never miss a numbers game again.

Hi - my name is Philip Jarvis and I appeared on Countdown in Series 47 on 1 February 2002. Scanning through some of these replies, I see that Kevin Thurlow is also a member. I was the 5th of the 9 contestants that Kevin beat on his way to the semi finals, but I do have the distinction of losing by less points than any of the others - just 10 (78 - 68). Looking at Kevin's recap of the game on this site, it's good of him to describe me as a "nice chap". It is also generous of Kevin to comment that I was "unlucky" to be disallowed the word "untape". If that word had been allowed and the following scores remained the same, I would have pipped Kevin by 1 point. In hindsight, I should have said the anagram "peanut", but I'm sure all those who have lost can point to a key moment in their own game.
I recall having a fantastic day out, but it really is tough when you sit in the hot seat for the first time. With the pressure of knowing you are on TV, with your mind racing to take in the strange environment and the Countdown clock ticking in “real time” towards 30 seconds, it really is a lot more difficult than sat at home. My brain did not seem to function in the normal way because of all this extra “noise” or activity it had to cope with. I found that this was particularly the case on the numbers games where I struggled to make even the most basic calculations. I can imagine that if you do manage to win the first game and start to relax a bit more, this gives the champion a bit of an advantage over new contestants. Anyway, for somebody who rarely gets the conundrum at home, it felt great when I pressed the buzzer after 7 seconds on METRODAFT. I'll always remember Richard Whiteley's words - "You wanted to go out in style. You are going out in style because that’s a beast and you got it!!”
I was made redundant and took an early retirement package a couple of weeks ago after 32 years service. Don't feel sorry for me - the lump sum I received allowed me to pay off the mortgage and I've got the cushion of receiving my pension early at the age of 50. I'm taking a couple of months out before looking to start a new career in 2009. Whilst filling in a bit of my recently increased spare time, I came across this site and recognised the names of many of the members, including my conqueror Kevin Thurlow. Therefore thought "what it the heck" - I might as well join myself.
Regards
Philip

Hi y'all. I'm Sue Sheldon and not only am I a Newbie on this site I am a chat room (is that the right terminology) virgin. So much so I posted a comment about Ran the Man before visiting here. I've been scrolling around the topics to try and get a feel for how it's done so forgive me for doing things in the wrong order. I was on the show, for one appearance only, in the first weeks of Des Lynam's reign but I'm not geeky enough to know which series it was. I was beaten by some bloke, sorry I cant remember your name, to the conundrum HARASSING, who then went on to be beaten by 'young Connor' hah! I'd just like to say on finishing, Damian is lovely and he should be a guest in DC from time to time, someone else could do his job for the day I'm sure!!

Thanks for reminding me, Ray that was him. I could remember what he looked like but not the name, mostly cos he is in the group photo taken when I was there. Is that cheating?

Hello,
My wife and I watch every show and they add structure to our day, being the time we have a tea-break in the afternoon. When Countdown isn't on we flounder. We hope the alterations coming are not too great as it is, or was, just about perfect.

Welcome everybody that I've missed! One of the reasons Philip stuck in my mind was that Richard decided he (Phillip) looked like Iain Duncan-Smith. Carol did berate Richard for that, but Philip took it in his stride. It was certainly a close game and not exactly what I wanted at the end of a long day.... Even if you win 8, you are very likely to need some luck along the way.

Hello and welcome to those of you above who've joined after me.
BTW I forgot to say that my uncle's been on the show, if any of you know him. He was only on one day as he lost - he's Charles Picken and it was in June this year. The next day neither contestant got the conundrum, but his wife Sue, who's a contestant from many years ago, was in the audience and she got it. (Odd that I forgot to mention this but it's because I've only met them a couple of times at my cousin's weddings, so don't really know them. However, I have told my cousins that if they don't want the Countdown goodies left to them in their wills, then I'll gladly have them. )
Thank you. However I'm not a whizz at the letters - too much time spent only paying half attention to them if they're after a difficult numbers that I'm still working on.aagharmer wrote:Welcome Lesley. You seem quite a character and I enjoy your posts.

Hi guys. OK I have obviously done this all very wrong by posting now and again without actually introducing myself!!
My name is Peter, I'm 19, from Belfast, and I stumbled across this forum during the summer, but didn't really give it much thought until I was reminded of it by Charlie on the programme. The date I joined is probably the most common date on here for new members!
I feel a little out of my depth as I've never appeared on or applied for Countdown, or indeed any other quiz programme for that matter, but I have watched Countdown for as long as I can remember...probably from when I was around 4-5. I've always loved the numbers game and maths is my real strong point. I know I can say that without fear of sounding smug, since up until a few years back I was absolutely atrocious at the letters game!
I grew up with the show and learnt my maths by playing the numbers game. For years people have been telling me I should apply, but I've never felt I was good enough...and now that I actually have started getting the confidence in my abilities to apply...it's all too late - it's the end of an era
Anyways, that's me! Be nice to me

It's not too late Peter - there are plenty more shows next series! I'd say take the plunge and apply - you're sure to have a great day, win or lose. Oh, and welcome aboard the forum.Peter Dunwoody wrote:and now that I actually have started getting the confidence in my abilities to apply...it's all too late - it's the end of an era

Not at all mate, I hung around here for 4 or 5 years before going on the programme, and I've never been on anything else either. You'll be very welcome here and we're always keen to bring new talent through.Peter Dunwoody wrote:I feel a little out of my depth as I've never appeared on or applied for Countdown, or indeed any other quiz programme for that matter

Thanks guys
It was always one of those silly childhood dreams to be on there with Richard and Carol. Now that they're both gone I just am not all that motivated any more. Still, I guess the format itself is the real star, so I might consider having a stab at it.

You may not have got to meet Richard and Carol, but you could still get to meet the new host and co-host and of course Susie (though I didn't meet her )
Also if you go on and win one game, you get the very sought-after Countdown Teapot, which not everyone gets, so it would be something to be very proud of.

Thank you for your warm welcome to the blog. I am not, nor ever have been, a drag. Nor, to my knowledge, have I been surgically altered and I have been told I have a very modest ego. I do, unfortunately, however, share some genetic material with the aforementioned. Obviously, though, having emerged from the womb a full 3 years before said Bro, I got all the best bits.Dinos Sfyris wrote:Or possibly your drag alter ego Jon?

They [Genus: Corbus Maximus] are all quite similar; why am I anticipating a Children of the Damned experience at the CofC??Kirk Bevins wrote:Haha and you speak just like Jon, too. Welcome to the forum.
Ignore Kirk - it's just that a few of the obsessives spend hours a day making sure they rarely lose. Other members have a life.
