Tuesday 28th February 2012 (Series 66, Prelim 37)

Countdown recap for Friday 2 March 2012.

C1: Champion Peter Lee (6 wins, 600 points.) An apte-forumite from Dublin, he has scored 120 and 118, with two nines each in his last two games. You don't have to be a brilliant mathematician to work out that he is averaging exactly 100 points per game and he could well make a late push for the number one spot.
C2: Challenger Ryan Carlsen. He is a "foodie" as he goes around the world with his girlfriend trying out new dishes. His mother Ulla (spelling?) is also a big fan of Nick.
DC: Susie Dent and John Parrott.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Enjoy the show.

Round 1: G R D T U E A R O

C1: OUTRAGED (8)
C2: GROUTED (7)
Score: 8–0 (max 8)

Peter is fast out of the blocks as he finds the only eight in the opening selection.

Round 2: Q E U N I S P E L

C1: SEQUIN (6)
C2: SUPINE (6)
DC: EQUIPS (6) PENSILE (7)
OT: EQUINES (7) LUPINES (7)
Score: 14–6 (max 15)

Ryan gets off the mark as Peter decides not to risk a longer word, which has cost him points a few times during his run.
PENSILE is an adjective meaning hanging down.
The noun LUPIN (also LUPINE) is a plant of the pea family, while the adjective LUPINE means relating to wolves.
An EQUINE is a horse or a member of the horse family.

Round 3: T S N F O I E I D

C1: IODINES (7)
C2: NOTIFIED (8)
DC: EDITIONS (8) SEDITION (8)
OT: NOTIFIES (8) TONIFIED (8) TONIFIES (8)
Score: 14–14 (max 23)

I'm sure I wasn't the only one who was amazed when Peter missed all of the eights, maybe tiredness was a huge factor at this point. Ryan punishes him and suddenly we're all square again.

Round 4: A E I M R F O L C

C1: CALORIE (7)
C2: RECLAIM (7)
DC: MIRACLE (7)
OT: ALIFORM (7) CARIOLE (7) CLAIMER (7) COMFIER (7) FEMORAL (7) FLAMIER (7) FOAMIER (7) LOAMIER (7) LORICAE (7) MALEFIC (7)
Score: 21–21 (max 30)

An extremely flat round here.
ALIFORM is an adjective meaning wing shaped.
A CARIOLE (normally with a double R) is a historical term for a small horse-drawn carriage, typically for just one person.
FEMORAL is an adjective relating to the thigh bone.
A LORICA (plural LORICAS or LORICAE) was a Roman corselet or cuirass of leather. It is also a zoology term for the shell of some rotifers and protozoans.
MALEFIC is an adjective meaning destruction. especially by supernatural means, or an astrology term relating to the planets Saturn and Mars.

Round 5: 50, 8, 2, 4, 1, 10. Target: 515.

C1: 515. (50+2)x10-4-1 (10)
C2: 515. 50x10+(8x2)-1 (10)
Score: 31–31 (max 40)

And a fairly easy numbers game fails to separate the players.

John Parrott tells a sort of amusing story about his golfing experiences.

Teatime teaser: KNIGHTIN -> THINKING

Round 6: A T S D E O A C L

C1: COASTED (7)
C2: COLDEST (7)
DC: LOCATES (7) COASTAL (7) CASELOAD (8)
Score: 38–38 (max 48)

The scores are still tied but DC come good with a great darrenic eight.

Round 7: K R J L E I A P N

C1: PLAINER (7)
C2: PLAINER (7)
DC: LANKIER (7) JERKIN (6)
OT: PRALINE (7)
Score: 45–45 (max 55)

Again, the contestants match each other, prompting Nick to come up with another classic quote:
"This is a close run thing, neck and neck I would say".

Round 8: D U A M W E S M S

C1: ASSUMED (7)
C2: ASSUMED (7)
DC: MEDUSAS (7)
OT: SESAMUM (7)
Score: 52–52 (max 62)

Still no separating them, who's going to blink first?
A MEDUSA is a form of coelenterate, such as a jellyfish, not the beast in Greek Mythology as that would be capitalised.
SESAMUM is another term for SESAME.

Round 9: G B T G O E I S E

C1: BOGGIEST (8)
C2: BOGGIEST (8)
DC: EGGIEST (7)
Score: 60–60 (max 70)

Neither Peter nor Ryan are missing much right now and it may take something special to break the deadlock. Let's see if the next numbers game can make a difference.

OOW: Susie explains the origin of the term "pop your clogs", as requested by a viewer of the show.

Round 10: 100, 25, 6, 4, 3, 8. Target: 234.

C1: 233.
C2: 234. (100+25-8)x(6-4) (10)
Score: 60–70 (max 80)

It does and we may have an upset on the cards! Peter misses it and Ryan leads by ten points with just the final part to play. Peter knows he's in a game now.

Teatime teaser: RACEKITS -> TRACKIES

Round 11: R H S N A O E V U

C1: RAVENOUS (8)
C2: REASON (6)
Score: 68–70 (max 88)

Our champ is not going to give up his place in the champion's chair without a fight as he comes up with the goods under huge pressure. Just two points in it now.

Round 12: E T I V M N O T E

C1: EVENT (5)
C2: EMOTIVE (7)
OT: TEMENOI (7)
Score: 68–77 (max 95)

Oh dear, Peter immediately loses ground as he can only see a five. As it stands, it's not massively significant though as Peter is will still overtake Ryan by getting the conundrum if the next two rounds are drawn.
A TEMENOS (plural TEMENOI) is a piece of ground surrounding or adjacent to a temple.

Round 13: N D T I A E R B I

C1: DIATRIBE (8)
C2: TRAINED (7)
OT: DAINTIER (8)
Score: 76–77 (max 103)

Peter bounces back immediately with a superb eight and now the gap's down to a solitary point. We could have a photo finish.

Round 14: 50, 100, 75, 4, 1, 8. Target: 568.

C1: 568. (75-4)x8 (10)
C2: 567.
Score: 86–77 (max 113)

Now Peter moves in front for the first time since the early stages as this numbers game turns out to be easier than it looked at first glance. Nine points separating the two players, ten points to play for, that can only mean one thing...
...crucial conundrum time!

Round 15: T R E N D P E E R

C2 buzzes on 1 second to say PRETENDED which is incorrect.
C1 buzzes on 2 seconds to say PRETENDER which is correct.
Final Score: 96–77 (max 123)

What a cruel way to lose. Peter's run looks to be over as Ryan buzzes in after just a second. Unfortunately for Ryan, he hadn't had time to count the number of R's and D's and goes for the wrong option. Peter solves it correctly shortly after and will get his chance to become the second octochamp of the series tomorrow.

So no massive score for Peter today but I'm sure he'll just be relieved to win. Spare a thought for Ryan who has been more than a match for Peter as he would have steamrollered many opponents with this level of performance. He was very unlucky to come up against a very good champion today, even if Peter wasn't at his best.

Will Peter become an octochamp tomorrow and possibly even become the new number one seed? He needs a win with 122 to do so, I wonder who he'll topple if he manages it. ;) The Robbo Recap will provide all of the answers.

I'll be back soon with a Monday recap. Until then, good afternoon. :D

Thanks for writing this up (meant to say this 4 years ago when I found it!) - never thought to record my show so this is the best I've got for showing to people I meet now who don't believe I was on!
