19. Which famous poet wrote the poems "Storm On The Island" and "Death of a Naturalist"?
A. Simon Armitage B. William Wordsworth C. John Clare D. Seamus Heaney
The answer's D. I hate Heaney so much, are you having to do the 4 poems by him in the anthology for GCSE English, Jason?

Death of a Naturalist is such a dreadful poem, it's a below-average short story turned into a poem by excessive enjambement.

I liked Heaney when I did him for GCSE, although some if that anthology is intolerably bad.

Is one of them The Early Purges at all?

I remember reading that poem in my English class in school and all I could think about were kittens drowning.

Is that because the first line is "I was six when I first saw kittens drown"?

If the kittens were mentioned elsewhere in the poem (after other animals get killed), it's what would've stuck in my mind.

That was an awesome thread until you deleted all your posts.
It had to happen. If the authorities knew about what I know, and that I was telling other people about it, they would probably try to kill me. We will all learn the truth in time, though.

Anyway, here are my answers. This quiz is definitely your easiest. I think I did considerably better than in your last quiz, in which I failed to spot that 'Aneres' is 'Serena' backwards. I don't really like this 'team' idea though, couldn't you have just done a straight quiz?

1. B
2. A
3. D
4. C
5. C
6. A
7. D
8. C
9. A

25. A (although zero is the real answer, I accept that your quiz is based in popular culture and fiction)

Haven't been writing it lately.. Working at the moment, 9 to 5. It's probably about one quarter done, so it won't be finished for some time. It's going to be hard to find a publisher too; I may have to publish and distribute it independently, out of my own pocket.

The authorities could probably discretely kill me now and get away with it. However, if I were to publish a book, and be widely known for revealing the truth, they would know that my sudden death would only heighten suspicion in the populace and make my words seem more correct. A violent uprising would ensue, the government would be overthrown, etc etc. They would be far more likely to try to discredit me by using intellectual satire or something similar in the newspapers. They wouldn't have the audacity to kill me. So, by gaining recognition my security is actually increased.

Heaney used to go out with my aunt but she thought [Edit: or maybe it was my uncles]he was a big girl's blouse. My Grandma used to express similar sentiment about Heaney, she didn't like his gritty realism and thought that poetry should transport you to another world rather than remind you how shit this one is[Edit: though she always cried at that line "A four foot coffin, a foot for every year" so she probably liked him begrudgingly].

[Edit: I like his poetry but then I think Larkin rocks so it's my kinda thing.]

Mid-Term Break isn't that bad but this is a monstrosity:

All year the flax-dam festered in the heart
Of the townland; green and heavy headed
Flax had rotted there, weighted down by huge sods.
Daily it sweltered in the punishing sun.
Bubbles gargled delicately, bluebottles
Wove a strong gauze of sound around the smell.
There were dragon-flies, spotted butterflies,
But best of all was the warm thick slobber
Of frogspawn that grew like clotted water
In the shade of the banks. Here, every spring
I would fill jampotfuls of the jellied
Specks to range on window-sills at home,
On shelves at school, and wait and watch until
The fattening dots burst into nimble-
Swimming tadpoles. Miss Walls would tell us how
The daddy frog was called a bullfrog
And how he croaked and how the mammy frog
Laid hundreds of little eggs and this was
Frogspawn. You could tell the weather by frogs too
For they were yellow in the sun and brown
In rain.

Then one hot day when fields were rank
With cowdung in the grass the angry frogs
Invaded the flax-dam; I ducked through hedges
To a coarse croaking that I had not heard
Before. The air was thick with a bass chorus.
Right down the dam gross-bellied frogs were cocked
On sods; their loose necks pulsed like sails. Some hopped:
The slap and plop were obscene threats. Some sat
Poised like mud grenades, their blunt heads farting.
I sickened, turned, and ran. The great slime kings
Were gathered there for vengeance and I knew
That if I dipped my hand the spawn would clutch it.

Ah, good old cheerful Phil. My English teacher was obsessed with him, so much so that I could legitimately claim to have a GCSE in Larkin. Wasn't really to my taste at the time, although that was probably because having things rammed down your throat is never the best way to appreciate them.

Anyway, she was quite an eccentric soul, but she did make up for her nutty behaviour by reading out "This Be the Verse" in the middle of an OFSTED inspection. Somehow she kept her job :)

This theory intrigued me, so I analysed it further and came up with the following graph:

As you can see, as recognition increases following the publication of the book, the chance of being killed by the authorities actually remains pretty much static, at only just above zero. Credibility, on the other hand, takes quite a steep downturn.

Interesting.

Thats exactly what I have to learn. I agree the poet who wrote this doesn't float my boat either. Most of the poems in the GCSE anthology book are pants but I like the "Affliction of Margaret" by Wordsworth. How did you know I study these? Did you? Got an exam on this crap on Tuesday

I always liked this poem, I find his juxtaposition between the onset of puberty and our losing our sense of place in the natural world to be very interesting but then I am weird.

Right here's my attempt at a big fat quiz of 25 questions for you to have a crack at? I'm not as cultured as some people so the questions are predominantly telly, films and chemistry. Enjoy :D

3. What is the IUPAC name (standard chemistry nomenclature) for acetone?
4. What's the name of the referee in Gladiators?

Quiz before last....
1A
2A
3D
4
5C
6A?
7D
8
9A (I think - I viewed it from a lodge in Kenya, but I think the mountain is actually in Tanzania)
10
11A?
12
13
14 A? ( I think)
15
16
17A? as the Scottish play is partly about jealousy
18
19
20 C? maybe, A was fairly old for his final and unprecedented 3rd term, but I think they changed the rules, to avoid having elections when they were involved (to some extent) in world war II.)
21
22 possibly D
23B
24
25 B (Apollo 11-17 allegedly set off for the moon, 13 didn't get there and 6 x 2 =12)

New quiz

3 er,..... the IUPAC name for acetone is acetone. English schools and USA's Chemical Abstracts Service may like propanone, but it isn't IUPAC yet. An alternative IUPAC name which is permitted, but not recommended, is dimethyl ketone. That will be 100 guineas please (+VAT).

Dinos's quiz

I have no idea at all with many of the questions in this quiz. So my answer is going to be very brief.

8. Guess 22. Now if you'd asked in which year the first one was released, I'd know that - I remember who I went with. ;)

11. Pakistan

18. Guess 1967

20. At last - one for which I'm confident. Minim

22. Listen to it. But I guess you are really wanting as the answer - Play it.

23. Not a very confident guess - Krypton

25. At least I can finish with some degree of confidence - Epsilon

04. John Anderson
05. Onion?

Joseph Bolas: 8 Lol at your answer to 13 :D
Howard Somerset: 4 although a couple of your incorrect answers were v close.

Re question 5: I suppose you don't HAVE to use this vegetable in a velouté, but it is used most of the time, so I guess the question should be: "Which vegetable is most often used in a velouté?"

Will reveal the answers on Sunday morning.

Are you saying that because it is fairly similar to something that once happened on University Challenge? If so, you don't understand at all why I gave those answers. I wasn't doing it to replicate the Uni Challenge thing at all, but rather to portray dinos as a rampant Jewish communist, which he is, following his attempt to portray me as an anti-semitic Hitlerite.

But why does that make you unhappy? Surely even you will admit that you are anti-Semitic and a Hitlerite. Surely?

I didn't say it made me unhappy, Jonathan. But for the record, I am not anti-semitic or a Hitlerite. I am one eighth Jewish myself and so possess the seed of Abraham within me. I am not anti-semitic, or anti-Jewish, but only anti-Satanic, and in the words of Jesus himself, there are those who call themselves Jews, and are not, but are the Synagogue of Satan. It's only the Satanic Jews that I have a problem with.

I'm glad to see that all my confident or near confident answers proved correct- 6 out of 6. I'm happy with 3 out of 5 for those I thought might be ok. And 4 out of 14 for the random guesses is about what one could expect, since there were four choices for each. I do make my score 13, though.

Even after seeing the answers, I still don't understand most of the questions. :( I guess I should've got a two or three more points, but there was no way I could've got any more than that.

Thanks, both Jason and Dino for the entertainment. I look forward to more.

And congrats to Jim and Ben for the highest scores.

No Dinos, the answer to question 3 is acetone! Propanone is not IUPAC (well, not yet anyway - the Americans will probably try to get that changed.) Schools in UK use propanone because they have amended IUPAC names to be more systematic, (e.g ethanoic acid instead of acetic acid - as "ethan" suggests there are 2 carbons), because it is easier to teach. The author of the book explained that when he asked me to comment on it! I still grumbled a bit, but can see his point of view.

Thanks Jim :D . Unfortunately, I can't do a quiz on a specific topic or field because it doesn't make good quiz viewing for people who are not specialised in a chosen topic :? A variety of different subjects gets a variety of interest from the forum. But well done on your performance in my last quiz again and look forward to my next quiz...it's HUGE!!

Not a failure Dinos!

Nobody knows everything.... I was a bit narked when a very experienced colleague published a paper with a mistake in the title! Anyway IUPAC will now spite me by using propanone when they publish the next rule book, which was due last year.
