Round 1: F R Y E I A H W C

Gavin: HAIRY (5)
Gareth: REACH (5)
DC: HAYWIRE (7)
OT: WHARFIE (7)
Score: 5–5 (max 7)

5s to start the day but DC go HAYWIRE and find one of the 7s

Round 2: P S E D S R A E D

Gavin: SPEARED (7)
Gareth: DRAPED (6)
DC: ASPERSED (8)
OT: ADPRESSED (18)
Score: 12–5 (max 25)

Gavin takes the lead with SPEARED. DC go one better but the darrenic-9 goes unnoticed
Image

Round 3: 3, 6, 8, 7, 9, 75. Target: 384.

Gavin: 384. (8-3)*75+9 (10)
Gareth: 384. (8-3)*75+9 (10)
Score: 22–15 (max 35)
Image

Teatime teaser: FINECANS -> FINANCES

Round 4: T S D B U A O E S

Gavin: BOASTED (7)
Gareth: BASSET (6)
DC: BOUTADES (8)
Score: 29–15 (max 43)

Gavin doubles his lead. DC find BOUTADES, much to the delight of Darren
Image

Round 5: N L T O E O N R T

Gavin: LOOTER (6)
Gareth: NOONER (6)
DC: TOOTLE (6)
OT: NORTENO (7) ROOTLET (7)
Score: 35–21 (max 50)

Bit of giggling heard around the studio as Susie explains the meaning of NOONER which is an event, especially sex :o , which occurs in the middle of the day

A NORTENO is an inhabitant or native of northern Mexico.

Round 6: 10, 7, 50, 25, 75, 100. Target: 209.

Gavin: 207.
Gareth: 210. 100+75+25+10 (7)
RR: 209. (100*50)+((10-7)*75)/25 (10)
Score: 35–28 (max 60)

Gareth plumps for 4 large and cuts Gavin's lead back to 7. Rachel seeks inspiration from George Ford to show the studio how it's done.

Dr Phil talks about the inevitability of death and says we should plan our deaths well in advance. Well that was cheerful.

Round 7: D Q J V I E O E M

Gavin: JIVED (5)
Gareth: MOVIE (5)
OT: DEMOI (5) EJIDO (5) EMOJI (5) MOVED (5) VIDEO (5)
Score: 40–33 (max 65)

Difficult selection but it means both contestants max a letters round for the first time today.

DEMOI is the plural form of DEMOS, the common people of an ancient Greek state
EJIDO is a piece of land farmed communally under a system supported by the state in Mexico. A lot of Mexican terms coming up today.
An EMOJI is..... well I think we all know what EMOJIS are thanks to Mr Robinson :D :) 8-) :P

Round 8: R S U E I M R T U

Gavin: MUSTIER (7)
Gareth: TIMERS (6)
DC: RUSTIER (7) UTERUS (6) TRUISM (6)
OT: TRIMERS (7)
Score: 47–33 (max 72)

A second straight max for Gavin and it puts him back to 14 ahead.

Round 9: 10, 5, 9, 6, 8, 50. Target: 188.

Gavin: -
Gareth: 187. (10-6)*50-(8+5) (7)
RR: 188. (6*5-10)*9+8 (10)
Score: 47–40 (max 82)

But that lead is immediately pegged back to 7 as he blanks on the numbers. Rach ignores the large number to give us the solution.

Teatime teaser: PERRYPOT -> PROPERTY

Round 10: S A U M P N A O K

Gavin: PUNKS (5)
Gareth: SPUNK (5)
DC: SPANK (5) MOANS (5)
OT: MANUKAS (7) MOUSAKA (7) OPANKAS (7)
Score: 52–45 (max 89)

It's PUNKS and SPUNK from our contestants but a trio of 7s are left hidden. I personally had UNMASK so felt good about this round until I started writing the recap.

MANUKAS are small trees with aromatic leaves which are sometimes used for tea, native to New Zealand and Tasmania.

Round 11: H M S A O I N R A

Gavin: ARIAS (5)
Gareth: MOANS (5)
DC: AIRMAN (6) SHAMAN (6) MANOIRS (7)
OT: MAHONIAS (8)
Score: 57–50 (max 97)

5s again from Gavin and Gareth but DC improve on them this time, while still missing the darrenic 8
Image

MAHONIAS are evergreen shrubs of the barberry family, which produces clusters of small fragrant yellow flowers followed by purple or black berries, native to eastern Asia and North and Central America.

OoW: Susie goes back to snoring and explains the minor differences for the synonyms of snoring. And then explains how many words in the OED have body parts as part of their origin.

Round 12: T N G E O E B N A

Gavin: TONNAGE (7)
Gareth: BONNET (6)
DC: NEONATE (7)
OT: BANTENG (7)
Score: 64–50 (max 104)

Could that be the killer blow? Gavin extends his lead back to 14 with a max

Round 13: G S C E I E L R T

Gavin: GRISTLE (7)
Gareth: REELS (5)
DC: CLERGIES (8)
OT: RETICLES (8) SCLERITE (8) TIERCELS (8)
Score: 71–50 (max 112)

And Gavin secures win number three with a good 7, although a series of 8s were available, one of which is given us by DC

Round 14: 1, 6, 100, 75, 50, 25. Target: 970.

Gavin: 975. ((50/25)+1+6)*100+75 (7)
Gareth: 975. (75+50)*(6+1)+100 (7)
RR: 970. (100-75/25)*(6+(50/10)-1) (10)
Score: 78–57 (max 122)

Gareth plays another 4 large before he waltzes off into the sunset and both plays are 5 away. Rachel shows them how to get it spot on.

Round 15: S O W H A T H U M

Gavin buzzes on 22 seconds to say MOUTHWASH which is correct.
Final Score: 88–57 (max 132)

Gavin gets a conundrum for the first time in his run to post his best score to date. He'll want to keep on improving and achieve a few more wins if he wants to make the finals. Nick sends Gareth off with his goody bag and a warning not to fall down any more hills at festivals. Calm down Nick, most festival goers do it at least once, in fact I'm wondering if I was one of the witnesses to Gareth doing so.

I think Anthony is doing todays recap, so join him (or whoever) for that, but until next week.

Cheerio.
