Alternative solution for numbers:

((10 - 4 + 6) * 25) - 6 - 4 = 290

As Rich said, well done to Allan - before the run of octochamps you'd have won a show or two playing that well.

Cheers all. Allan was the first of my opponents who genuinely pushed me to concentrate throughout (despite missing PROFILE, I got distracted by OLEFIN) and I was pleased to win and get my second nine on the board. I did have SPAWNER as well as WANKERS, which I knew was valid, but I mentioned it and they insisted that there was no need to re-shoot. Shame. For the record, the gallery had SUPERWANK in that round and was prompting Susie to say it. Alas, she was far too professional.

You are right John, it has passed by before without real alarm, hence the reason we didn't do a retake, but C4 rightly pointed out that it is half-term and WANKER is No.3 of their list of most offensive words, so they had no option but to bleep it.

I think it didn't help matters much that Charlie also looked like a wanker.

I don't want to name names but it takes a special kind of talent to come up with SUPERWANK. The sort of talent that, say, only a producer would have.

It's a shame it had to be bleeped. Everyone in the studio seemed to have a laugh over it though :D

Charlie well played but i kinda edged u got the conundrum, and had ur 9 with creations, had another 9 when u had atomise I had anomities, but I gotta say ur as good as has been on in a while (long while) prob champion material.
My log in name is 4 a reason, met Marina Curran whilst she was on holiday with her husband Raymond last week in Ireland. She said she has auditioned for the 'Carol Job', she would replace her with consumate ease, bubbly, good crack, works as a statictition, very easy on the eye (calm down Raymond, part of the pitch) and last but not least would whip any would be pool player blind folded, (if u c this, nice black by the way). So Charlie and co. if it is anyway possible you can use your influences to help her out in anyway, she's the woman for the job, in time they'll be getting stumped on mastermind with what was the surname of Carol the ex numbers lady on countdown. So get it going Curran 4 Countdown.
Best of luck in the programme, I reckon ul win the grand finale.
Just noticed Damian E blogging, take it it is your good self Mr. Eadie, you'll probably have hundreds of applications for the 'Carol Job', without trying to influence you too much, Ireland says Curran 4 Countown, that is if she turns down our President's job.

I think WANKERS was actually more funny because they bleeped it out, I don't think it would have been as funny otherwise. I take it there are no DC beaters for today then? Then Dictionary Corner must have got the max, well done.

Whilst my last post was championing Ms. Curran, I gotta also add, in my opinion a good replacement 4 Des would be your man used 2 guest on Dictionary Corner now and again, think his name is Philip Franks, he of Darling buds of may etc.

I had TAMABLE but figured there was no value in it when AMOEBA was already a winner. If Allan had declared 7 I might've gone for it, but even then maybe not.

Top game today -- good performances coupled with humour. I hadn't expected Charlie to offer WANKERS and figured his sniggering was a "yeah, I saw that word too" kind of expression. Pleasing to see NARCOTISE preferred over the bland alternatives, I remember some other great person did the same thing.

There's OATMEAL as well which I always remember as MALATE + O, but it's not an easy word.

Beat you on a letters game again, Charlie. Got STURDIER. And today was definitely my narrowest defeat by you in the five games so far.

And very pleased to have equalled you, Alan.

I'm always amused when Carol clearly doesn't know where a contestant is going in their answer to a numbers game, as in R10 today, looking for 262.
I had the same answer as Mark Kudlowski (above), (50x5)+((25-1)/2), so realised what Alan was doing. Once Charlie went 25x5 it was obvious he was looking for 131x2, but Carol seemed bemused.
It made me wonder what Carol's answer would have been, the neatest I've seen is Peter Mabey's, (50+1)x5+7, but does Carol ever mention her solution in the studio when a contestant already has the answer?
Also, I have once seen Carol admit that she didn't have an answer when a contestant did, albeit in a Final. Have there been other instances of her "owning up"?

Yep, sometimes if the contestants miss a much simpler or more elegant solution. She seemed to do that more "back in the day" than now.

Plenty, I think she's always honest about it. I remember several 4 large games that she missed during Jon O'Neill's run, for example.

Commiserations, Allan. A brilliantly played game, but unlucky that you came up against the Reamster.
Congratulations, Charlie, on another century.

I got PROLINE in round 2, but didn't risk it. I was pleased to get CREATIONS in whatever round it was.
I also got WANKERS, and, watching it on Virgin Media On Demand, I'm sure it wasn't bleeped.
However, after reading this thread, I checked and it was bleeped, maybe after someone noticed.
Pity, since my eldest son had visions of recording it for You Tube!
