Enjoy the show.

Round 1: H I P N U T E Z A

Den: PEANUT (6)
Jacky: PETUNIA (7)
DC: ZENITH (6)
Score: 0–7 (max 7)

Jacky scores first in this battle of two new contestants, Alistair tries to pretend that a variant spelling of hypotenuse is in there and initially Nick seems to take him seriously.

Round 2: L U D I E S L H C

Den: chiseld
Jacky: CHILLED (7)
DC: DUCHIES (7)
OT: CULLIES (7) DEHULLS (7) DULLISH (7) ILLUDES (7) SCULLED (7) SHILLED (7) SLUICED (7) SULLIED (7)
Score: 0–14 (max 14)

Den might not be the best spellar out there as he is way out on the spelling or his word enabling Jacky to increase her lead.

Round 3: 3, 9, 1, 50, 75, 25. Target: 386.

Den: 377. ((75+25+9)*3)+50 (5)
Jacky: 378. Mistake in working.

Both contestants declare an answer some way off from the target and Jacky has misdeclared, giving Den the chance to make up five points. Rachel doesn’t have it either so utters her catchphrase “I’ll have another look”

Teatime teaser: PASSLICE -> SPECIALS

Rachel has been working on it during the break and now…

RR: 386. (75+9)*(3+1)+50 (10)
Score: 5–14 (max 24)

Rachel seemed a bit embarrassed to have missed that one in thirty seconds.

Round 4: I E O S L Y C A R

Den: COARSELY (8)
Jacky: SCALIER (7)
DC: ORACLES (7) SCARILY (7) CALORIES (8)
OT: CARIOLES (8)
Score: 13–14 (max 32)

That’s a nice max from Den and the gap is down to a single point.

Round 5: M E B J A E R D T

Den: DREAMT (6)
Jacky: BERATED (7)
DC: BEDMATE (7)
OT: BREAMED (7) DEBATER (7) REBATED (7)
Score: 13–21 (max 39)

Jacky increases her lead again as she maxes this round.

Round 6: 2, 4, 7, 3, 75, 25. Target: 644.

Den: -
Jacky: 646. ((4*2)*75)+25+(7*3) (7)
RR: 644. (25+75)-(4*2)*7 (10)
Score: 13–28 (max 49)

…and she now has a bigger lead that that which she built up earlier as her 2 away gives hr a 15 point lead.

DC Guest: Alistair spoke about milestones of reaching certain ages, including the differences he has noticed since he turned 50. He also impersonates a historian called David Starkey who (apparently) appears on question time.

Round 7: N A R L S O A E N

Den: ARSENAL (7)
Jacky: LOANERS (7)
OT: ANNEALS (7) ENSNARL (7) LANNERS (7)
Score: 20–35 (max 56)

Den gives Alistair excuse to do his Arsene Wenger impression. And for the first time in the game both contestants score in the same round.

Round 8: W R O A S T O M A

Den: ROAST (5)
Jacky: SWARM (5)
DC: AORTAS (6) AROMAS (6)
OT: ASWARM (6) MASOOR (6) MOTORS (6) STROMA (6)
Score: 25–40 (max 62)

Fives for the contestants but a few very gettable sixes were available.

Round 9: 10, 10, 5, 4, 4, 100. Target: 900.

Den: 900. (4+5)*100 (10)
Jacky: 900. (4+5)*100 (10)
Score: 35–50 (max 72)

Numbers games don’t get much simpler than this one.

Teatime teaser: AUNTENID -> INUNDATE

Round 10: Q U P E O T L N A

Den: OPULENT (7)
Jacky: pelaton
DC: POLENTA (7)
OT: APOLUNE (7) AUTOPEN (7)
Score: 42–50 (max 79)

That’s an excellent max by Den, Jacky thinks she has a seven as well but like Den’s offering in round two her word is misspelled

Round 11: S I T S O T B W A

Den: SWOTS (5)
Jacky: TOAST (5)
DC: TOASTS (6) WAISTS (6)
OT: TATSOIS (7)
Score: 47–55 (max 86)

Jacky has TOAST but misses TOASTS, I thought WOTSITS would be valid but the recap writer has told me otherwise.

OoW – Susie talks about the origin of the phrase “my neck of the woods”

Round 12: N F V E I U P D E

Den: VEINED (6)
Jacky: UNIPED (6)
DC: ENVIED (6) FUNDIE (6)
OT: DEFINE (6) DEVEIN (6) ENDIVE (6) INFEED (6) PEINED (6) VENDUE (6)
Score: 53–61 (max 92)

Flat round sees both spot a max word, both feel that their words are risky but both are valid. Jacky still leads by eight points and the game is still anybody’s to win.

Round 13: G S M O A I D G O

Den: AMIGOS (6)
Jacky: IMAGOS (6)
DC: DOGMAS (6)
OT: AGOGOS (6) MAGGID (6) OMIGOD (6)
Score: 59–67 (max 98)

Den says AMIGOS, Jacky says IMAGOS, two more rounds and we’ll be calling the whole thing off.

Round 14: 10, 1, 6, 7, 100, 50. Target: 941.

Den: 945.
Jacky: 940. (100-6)*10 (7)
RR: 941. (100-1)*(10+6-7)+50 (10)
Score: 59–74 (max 108)

Jacky gets to one away without realising she still had the one to add on, she won’t mind however as Den is too far away and Jacky’s seven points gives her the game.

Round 15: I F I R E D T O M

Den buzzes on 5 seconds to say MORTIFIED which is correct.
Final Score: 69–74 (max 118)

Den gets to shine one more time as he spots the conundrum, he has lost however and Jacky becomes the new champ and tomorrow will play for a place in series 72.

The series 71 finals begin on Wednesday, and James will recap the first two quarter finals and I’ll be here next Monday for QF number three. Also, if no one is available to recap the fourth QF between mark and George I am happy to do it.

Should be a good finals tournament. All the best to all the c4 community.

The wiki hasn't made the connection, but is today's champ likely to be the Jackie Pinkney from Series 19?

Mike's records have the original one as coming from Sevenoaks, but it is certainly plausible that she could have moved to the Isle of Man within 25 years......... :P

What would her average speed have to be to get from Sevenoaks to the Isle of Man in 25 years? We need to know that before deciding if it's realistic.

Gut feel says it's definitely possible. Not only could it be walked / swum in that timescale, a bit of online research has thrown up that "cars" (in their most primitive form of course) existed even back then. Factor in buses, trains, trams, Sinclair C5s and the pogo stick and the available options seem almost limitless.

I won't believe if it there's no bridge. Also, is she older than 30?

You would think so, but maybe her hairstyle makes her look older than she really is.

Today's intro from Nick says she's originally from Kent, now lives on the Isle of Wight, so I think that settles it.

If she can move from the Isle to Man to the Isle of Wight between episodes then she's capable of anything.

I think I already have, but let me know if it looks how it should, or if I'm treading on anyone's toes by changing it myself.

Certainly not treading on anyone's toes, although you only did half a job, but no matter, all is well now. ;) :) :D

Hmmm. OK, humour me briefly. I can see the changes that you made, but what do they do that mine didn't? Clicking on the "Jackie Pinkney" link from Series 19 still took you instantly to the newly merged page via the redirection.

Didn't he? Looking at the edits, I thought he did. Also in his second edit, he changed "series 19 and series 71" to "series 19 and 71".

Nope, James added the newer game but (insert name of the other person here) added the older game in his edit.

And one is from the Isle of Wight, the other from the Isle of Man (via Sevenoaks).

My question to James was a genuine one. There is nothing worse than people who mean well but don't really know what they're doing (not literally - there probably are things that are worse), so I just wanted to understand what was wrong with the edit I had done.

The only things that were wrong, Fred, was that while you sorted the main page out, we want to try and remove all redirects from the Wiki, plus you also need to follow it up with all the relevant pages from the past as well.

If you hit the "Recent changes" button, you'll see what I mean. :)
