Spoilers for Thursday September 4th 2014 (S71 P40)

Post by Jordan F »

Another possible coronation day is upon us. David Stanford has a chance today of becoming the 3rd octochamp of series 71, which already would tie us with the number from series 70. Interestingly enough, he has the chance to go for a certain record of...distinction. If he scores 57 points or less and wins, he will be the lowest scoring octochamp ever in any 15 round format. Already he is likely to be the lowest octochamp in new 15, as the previous lowest (Joe McGonigle) is in the 700s. Let's see what happens.

Join James for the recap later.

An easier record to get might be the octochamp with fewest maxes. He's on 31 at the mo I think, a mere 6 away from the record - and 6 is the most he has managed in one game.

Nice 5 from Szelong - the other 5s are more obscure.

Was disappointed to only make 584 on first numbers, but Rachel (and the computer) agrees.

582 was more straightforward though (using the standard method).

I don't want to assume David will make finals. Definitely a good chance, but I don't want to assume as it appears Nick has. Nevertheless, interesting way for the run to end, as I think a lot of us thought it could've happened sooner. Not that David was the worst player ever, he did get some good spots and a couple of 9s, just not the most consistent player ever.

Couple of standard method solves for the 3L round, but Szelong found a nicer way!

I think Dave must have been told about the record attempt and was trying to win with as few points as possible,
but misjudged how good Szelong was.

Anyone catching David for the first time today, will be wondering how on earth did this guy manage to win 7 in a row, he was so bad today I was half expecting him to declare 9...... CHIMPANZEE in the final letters game!

That was the exact conundrum shuffle from my last show back in 2004.

I went to school for several years with a guy whose surname was Ng, and I was never able to get the pronunciation correct.

Hoping he asks Rachel for a vowel tomorrow.

I had a couple of ways for 582, 500 + 81 + 1 and 600 -18.
Also the 3L round I did 50x10 - (25+6-1)

Vroom definitely deserved to be the max for the round it was in!
Be good to see lots more of Szelong, he seems a fun type of guy :D

CHIMPANZEE is a 10, with there being no N in the selection.

OVIFORM in the IMPROV+AFO round.

That was the point I was making, James.
David was playing so poorly, he may have went for CHIMPANZEE not realizing there was no N, plus it was a 10!

So David wins seven games against some tricky opposition including an apterous player, spotting two nine letter words in the process, and still gets insulted as if he's Apterous Prune?

This way please. Fill out the form, send it in, and we eagerly await your air date. Make sure you don't do anything disastrous like only win seven games, or win a game with a low score, or miss words under studio pressure that the rest of us spot from the comfort of our living rooms.

Ah right.

Plus, following your Touchy Words prowess, why haven't you applied, as Graeme says?

Alright, points taken, maybe I was being a little harsh on David, there may have been any number of reasons for his poor showing today.
Although Mark, you won't mind getting him in the QF's!
As soon as I feel confident enough to do myself justice (numbers wise) my application will be sent off.
You may mock my TOUCHY WORDS prowess James, but I'm still the No.1 player on the planet!

Its just nice to see someone obviously enjoying playing so much. I was too nervous and self conscious for that. David may not have been a world beater but 99% of people going on the show would take what he achieved in a heartbeat.

Did I ever mock you? I just said that due to you being no.1 in the world then it's surprising to not have seen you on countdown. I'd imagine you'd put on quite a performance.

As I'm a colossal nerd, I would naturally turn to They Might Be Giants to resolve this issue, and I think they suggest more like "Eng":
