To be honest, I'm at a loss as to who this Jewish man who likes to offer lifts to random young men in his fast car could be.
It wasn't Alain de Botton was it?

Nope. You've also jumped to some conclusions. I'll help you out a bit. I'm not a random young man (to this person), and his car isn't fast.

So this person already knows you? You should have said. Was it Simon Schama?

Ok, so he knows you but not well enough to know that you would refuse his offer of a lift because it was the Sabbath? Melvyn Hayes?

I didn't say because I was hoping you would assume I'm not posting on here about being randomly groomed by a famous person. So it wasn't a huge deal that he offered me a lift, but I thought it good fodder for this guessing game. Nope, not Simon Schama.

Pretty close with that assessment Philip, we're only occasional acquaintances really, but I think he does know that I wouldn't take a lift on the Sabbath, just it was already well into Saturday evening and it probably didn't occur to him that it was still the Sabbath. No, not Melvyn Hayes.

We've barely progressed since Graeme guessed that the person is male and Jewish. You all seem to be guessing names rather than delving deeper, e.g. age, profession, etc.

Not quite. I was amazed that Mark cut through all the rigmarole of male or female, old/young yada yada yada and almost got it, so to be fair I should say why - it was a female athlete.

Sally Gunnell has been our joke "we can't even think of a guess" joke answer at quizzes for years now. And it SO NEARLY finally paid dividends right here. Amazing coincidence it was even close.
That said....Jessica Ennis?
