Countdown Aces Trophy - Saturday 23 November 2013

Post by James Robinson »

A FANTASTIC NEW WAY TO ROUND OFF THIS YEAR'S CO-EVENTS!!!

After much deliberating, trialling and developing, Jeff Clayton and I are proud to launch the COUNTDOWN ACES TROPHY. 8-) 8-) 8-)

A fresh approach to Countdown tournaments comes to West Yorkshire this autumn with the Aces Trophy, which introduces a new twist to the semi-final stage.

There are four heats in the first part which everyone is guaranteed to play along with the quarter-final. Then using a championship format from the French television show, the event becomes an exhibition showpiece.

For the semi-finals, our four aces will each take to the stage to play a solo contest in front of the audience. One by one, they will face a run of 15 preset rounds: six letters games, six numbers games, two conundrums and then a free choice at the end.

That is, if they get that far!

Not only will they be up against a 5-minute time bank, but they will also be on the buzzer in every round. It's very simple - you buzz in with the max words and the right solutions. Score points with the right answers, but incur time penalties for anything incorrect or out of range.

Letters: As in the normal game, the contestant is not told the available max beforehand. Each letter appears from left to right, one second at a time. The clock starts as soon as the last letter is in place. Once you buzz, you will be asked to declare how many letters are in your word before offering. Score 10 points for a max word, or 1 point if you come up one short. If there is no buzz then the clock simply runs its course. But if your offer is invalid or you are out of range of the available max, you forfeit 30 seconds in addition to however much time you've used in that round.

Numbers: Each tile appears from right to left, then when CECIL comes up with the target, the clock starts. Buzz in once you can offer a solution – declare your answer before going through your working. Score 10 points for a correct solution, or 1 point if you can get to one away and want to move on. If there is no buzz then the clock simply runs its course. An incorrect answer forfeits 30 seconds.

The numbers get progressively harder and the difficulty ratings have been measured using crosswordtools.com. The first numbers game in R2 is no harder than 50%, whilst the sixth numbers game in R13 is upwards of 80%.

Conundrum: As per the normal game, you get one shot at it. Score 10 points with the correct answer, but forfeit 30 seconds with an incorrect answer.

Format:
1 - L
2 - N (<50%)
3 - L
4 - N (50-59%)
5 - L
6 - N (60-69%)
7 - C
8 - L
9 - N (70-79%)
10 - L
11 - N (70-79%)
12 - L
13 - N (80-89%)
14 - C
15 - * free choice.

Lowest qualifying seed goes first. The maximum available score is 150 and the two highest performers go through to the final. The ranking will be determined by points scored, then by how many rounds they got through, then by how much time is left on the clock.

In the final, the two contenders will go head-to-head in a 20-round match (9L, 9N, 2C). We do away with the preset rounds and the time bank, but they will still be on the buzzer in every round and now there is no safety net for falling short of the maximum. Using flat scoring, a max word or a correct solution scores 1 point, but they'll forfeit 1 point with an incorrect buzz. So they'll need confidence and quick thinking in the harder selections, and sheer speed in the easier ones!

We have had an engraved salver produced for the winner to take away (https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid ... =1&theater) and we've had a brilliant new title sequence produced by "mongrelvids" -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCFGkTsiF9U.

So, if that's whetted your appetite for a new version of Countdown, then come on over to the Grosvenor Casino in Huddersfield (HD1 3LT) on 23rd November -- http://www.grosvenorcasinos.com/local-c ... ddersfield.

Admission: The cost is just £20 per person or £35 for two; tea & coffee will be available on arrival, and a buffet lunch will be served at 12:30. To book, please contact either myself (james_r_robinson@hotmail.com / 07817 750 544) or Jeff (jeffrey_clayton@hotmail.com / 07595 690 249).

Happy to take any queries about this new format and this new event on here. Also, can you let us know if you'd be interested in a poker night after the tournament (suggest 8-9pm start?) as this would be a great way to round off our Aces event.

I'm excited, I'm sure you will be too!! ;) :) :D  8-) :geek: :ugeek:

Well, I think it's time for a little perk-up for this thread.

Hopefully, everyone has gone back into the usual form of school runs, annoying traffic going to work, household chores, etc.

But, fear not, in 11 weeks time, there is something a brilliant new tournament heading to Huddersfield with new rules, new tactics and new excitement to finish off a brilliant 2013.

Just to remind you, this new version, based on the French CoC format makes getting the maxes more important than ever, with maximum points available for perfection, and time penalties for imperfection, as it's a race against the clock to build up a big score before your 5 minutes are up.

So, get ready for a heightened sense of SPEED, PRESSURE AND SPECTACLE!!! to end this brilliant year of Countdown-ing.

For all those of you who are heading to Co:Leam in 3 weeks time, me and Jeff will be happy to answer all your questions about this exciting new format. 8-) 8-) 8-)

Don't forget that trains and hotel rooms are available now, so once you paid up, get yourself booked into Huddersfield's premier accommodation, I'd recommend:
The Premier Inn by the Marina: http://www.premierinn.com/en/hotel/HUDC ... l?cmp=GLBC
or the Travelodge on the A62: http://www.travelodge.co.uk/hotels/530/ ... ield-hotel

So, hope to hear from you soon. ;) :) :D  8-) :geek: :ugeek:

Like normal with our events, it's 10:00, so, after the draw is done, we start pretty much straight away, so around 10:10 for the actual action to start.

Don't forget that the casino will be open from 9:00, and that you'll have to register with the casino (don't worry, it's nothing much to worry about, they only need a signature and a photo at the desk).

The solo rounds will begin around 3:30-3:45 roughly, which will lead on towards the finals. 8-)

Register at the casino? This is me you're talking to. I've been to the Grosvenor in Huddersfield numerous times before! I'm doing a darts exhibition the night before in Leicestershire so was wondering about train times etc. I'll see what the times/prices are like.

With just 17 DAYS TO GO NOW, here's an offer for anyone still interested in attending but looking carefully at the pennies...............

We can offer you the opportunity to sign up as a reserve player for the much reduced price of £5.

This means you'll be granted admission to the event and will be fed and watered, but only invited to play if we have an odd number on the day.

Don't dismiss it, think about it, could be a useful way of saving fifteen quid and you might still get to play too.

Look forward to hearing from you! PM either Jeff on FB, or me on here or FB. ;) :) :D 8-)

We're steadily increasing our influx of players, but for all those who are still thinking of coming down to Huddersfield for this new take on a CO-event, please note that you only have until Tuesday at 10pm to book your place, owing to catering commitments at the casino.

So, if you want to come on down for the final CO-event of the year, get in touch with me or Jeff soon, to secure your place at this extravaganza extraordinaire. 8-) 8-) 8-)

Look forward to hearing from you all.

It's one of each, one will be the 9 rounder, one will be the 14 rounder, one will be the old 15 rounder and one will be the current 15 rounder.

It will be decided in what order on the day, by draw system, as with your opponent. :D

Yes, as will the quarter-final, but the solo semis will all be different, but Jeff has tried to make them as evenly spread in difficulty as possible. 8-)

Just another little reminder, thanks to Anthony's mention above, to all contestants, make sure you leave a bit of extra time to get yourself signed up into the casino (unless you're already a member, as you won't need to), but it literally takes no time at all. :D

Note also, that the dress code is smart casual, no sports gear or trainers, etc. 8-)

So, just for you guys who weren't there yesterday, the event was a huge success, and a full results analysis will be available in a while.

But, the main bulletpoints are this:

After the 4 heats (which were done in this order, 14 rounder, old 15 rounder, 9 rounder, current 15 rounder): 3 players had a 100% record, they were Jack Worsley, Kirk Bevins and Heather Styles. 8-)

The quarter-final line-up was as such:

Jack Worsley (1) v Stewart Gordon (8)
Kirk Bevins (2) v Phil Jarvis (7)
Heather Styles (3) v Andy McGurn (6)
Callum Todd (4) v Andy Platt (5)

The top 3 all qualified for the solo semis, but Andy Platt caused a minor shocking by defeating Callum to take his place.

So, the 4 semi-finalists took part in the new 15-round "solo" format. After a random draw to decide which "suit" they would have, Andy had the Club suit, Heather chose Spade, Kirk had Diamond and Jack was left with Heart.

Andy finished with 94 points and 51 seconds remaining, Heather went next and scored 64 points with 32 seconds to go, Kirk followed with a spectacular 123 points with 1:38 left.

But, that all paled into insignificance when Jack Worsley appeared. Having never played this new format before, he scored a MAX GAME of 150 points, and didn't even use half of his 5 minute time bank :!: :!:   :o :o

So, the new 20-round final took place, with just maxes counting for anything, and with the exception of the first conundrum and the last numbers game, all answers given by the contestants were correct MAXES.

In the end, Jack was just too strong for Kirk, winning the final 11-7. ;) :) :D  8-)

My usual Facebook album of the event is a bit short on pictures, but it's made up by some brilliant video footage of the said MAX GAME, as well as the final, which I'll link up here later. :D :D :D
