C1: WANTON (6)
C2: TANNER (6)
DC: ORNATE (6)
OT: NORTENA (7) NORTENO (7)

Honours even in the first round, with 6 for both players.

Round 2: A R S E R C O U H

C1: COARSER (7)
C2: COARSER (7)
DC: COURSER (7) CAROUSER (8)
Score: 13–13 (max 15)

We got to the bottom of this round  with 7 for both players. There was an 8 with carouser though.

Round 3: 7, 6, 4, 10, 5, 25. Target: 990.

C1: 990. (25 x 4) - (7-6) x 10 (10)
C2: 990. Mistake in working.
Score: 23–13 (max 25)

Alex takes the lead as the challenger sees a rogue 8, which even if there, would have got him to 992 instead of 990.

Teatime teaser: BILLFUSS -> BLISSFUL

Round 4: G Q E I E M N T O

C1: TEEMING (7)
C2: MEETING (7)
DC: MITOGEN (7)
OT: EMOTING (7) TEMENOI (7)
Score: 30–20 (max 32)

7 for both players here. DC come up with MITOGEN, a substance that induces or stimulates mitosis.

Round 5: E I Y H S J T E F

C1: FETISH (6)
C2: FETISH (6)
DC: FEISTY (6)
OT: FISHEYE (7)
Score: 36–26 (max 39)

Both players have a FETISH for 6 here, and another FEISTY one from DC. All including DC missed FISHEYE for 7 though.

Round 6: 4, 7, 9, 5, 100, 25. Target: 147.

C1: 148. 25 + (7x4) -5 + 100 (7)
C2: 148. 100 + (9x5) + (7-4) (7)
RR: 147. 7 x (25-4) (10)
Score: 43–33 (max 49)

Both players come one away here as Alex maintains his 10 point lead.

Deborah talks about her animals, and how she is terrified of her geese and once had builders watching her deal with them in her white dressing gown.

Round 7: R A S Z D M U E U

C1: REMUDAS (7)
C2: DREAMS (6)
Score: 50–33 (max 56)

Alex extends his lead with REMUDAS. Looks like Mike's DREAMS of becoming champion are becoming a nightmare.

Round 8: S A E R T G A I K

C1: gariest
C2: GRATES (6)
DC: GAITERS (7) TRIAGES (7)
OT: AGISTER (7) ATRESIA (7) STAGIER (7)
Score: 50–39 (max 63)

Alex has GARIEST disallowed. Susie points out the word should be gar-ish. This allows the GRATE-ful challenger to close the gap to 11 points.

Round 9: 2, 6, 1, 10, 7, 75. Target: 356.

C1: 356. 75 x (6-1) - 10 -7 -2 (10)
C2: 360.
Score: 60–39 (max 73)

Alex extends his lead to 21 points after MIke could only muster 360 from the 3rd numbers game.

Teatime teaser: OILSCARE -> CALORIES

Round 10: E I U D L T A P F

C1: UPLIFTED (8)
C2: palitude
DC: UPFIELD (7)
Score: 68–39 (max 81)

The challenger gets 8, only for it to be disallowed, allowing Alex to extend his lead further with UPLIFTED for 8. Susie sees PLAUDIT but it cannot be a word unless it is pluralised to PLAUDITS.

Round 11: E S X R G D I A P

C1: PRAISED (7)
C2: - (0)
DC: ASPIRED (7) GRASPED (7) DIAPERS (7)
OT: DESPAIR (7) SPARGED (7)
Score: 75–39 (max 88)

Alex is PRAISED again in this round as he gets 7 more. Mike couldn't find anything worthy of declaration apparently.

Susie talks about animals in honour of Deborah being in DC.

Round 12: O E R N C D O E M

C1: CONDOM (6)
C2: CROONED (7)
OT: DOORMEN (7) EMOCORE (7) ENCODER (7) ENCORED (7) MODERNE (7)

C1: INVESTED (8)
C2: DEVOTES (7)
OT: NOSEDIVE (8)
Score: 83–46 (max 103)

Alex will be glad he INVESTED in this round, giving him another 8.

Round 14: 5, 8, 10, 4, 25, 50. Target: 523.

C1: 523. Mistake in working.
C2: 523. 25 + (50 x 10) - (8/4) (10)
Score: 83–56 (max 113)

Alex messes up the numbers, giving Mike a consolation 10 points.

Round 15: M A Y A I R I N G

C1 buzzes on 5 seconds to say IMAGINARY which is correct.
Final Score: 93–56 (max 123)

A good conundrum spot for Alex, but he doesn't quite make the century. That's 6 wins for him now, so only 2 to go before he reaches OCTOCHAMP-DOM.

Join Graeme Cole on Monday to see if he can come another step closer.

Until next we meet, it's goodbye, and thank you for reading :P
