Jill has 3 wins so far, can she get the half octochamp total?

PERILUNE for a beater in round 2.

And yet couldn't Eileen also have stuck the T on her HORNED for THORNED?

Yep, THORNED valid, also (this is lexplorer's, not mine) DEXTRIN in that round as a nice alternative 7.
Edit: What a game there, best of the series so far?! Loads of maxes (aided by the flat rounds but still, you gotta spot them!), close all the way, fantastic decision by the challenger to go three large - I very much doubt I'd have got that numbers game under studio pressure - and really tense on the conundrum as nobody solved it! Absolutely great stuff.

That was one of the better games I've seen in awhile. Very well done to Eileen. I have to admit I wasn't expecting a 102 performance from either contestant at first, but she impressed me, in particular she seems very comfortable with her numbers. And very unlucky to Jill, on another day she probably could have been octochamp level in her own right.

I was predicting the T-for-Taylor would be turned around, and it was!
Very good standard - I had to win by getting the conundrum.

Great game, well played both. I was cheering on Eileen and found myself saying the Dexys Midnight Runners song "Come on Eileen".

Great game there, probably the best of this series in terms of a contest. 10-10 on maxes I think. That was a great numbers spot by Eileen, I thought 3L was a bad tactical move at the time but what do I know?
I missed out on a max game by missing LOFTIEST.

Nope, well the letters were there, but it's one of the most commonly declared invalid words on apterous.Jojo Apollo wrote:Was VARIATED in the 4th round?
I missed LOFTIEST as well Jack, if that makes you feel better

I thought Eileen was fantastic. Good consistency throughout and a great spot on the last numbers.
I hope she now goes on a run and gets through to the quarters.

Very good game indeed, was so hard to decide who to support. In the end I think I was happier to see Eileen avenge herself, but I'm really hoping Jill makes it into the quarters. With her total score she's bound to be the top of the 3-time winners, so it's a definite possibility.

Re: Spoilers for Wednesday April 24th 2012 (Series 68 Prelim
Yep, good point Innis. I reckon 3 wins might well be the cut-off point, but I feel Peter and Philip still have a chance of squeezing in, particularly if Rachael isn't feeling up to playing.
Eileen might well eclipse 3 wins though, she's clearly been watching the show for a long time and her numbers are fantastic. I think I said something in another thread about how if your opponent was a little on the older side rather than, for example, a 20 year old maths student at Cambridge you can probably presume you have the numbers advantage. Well, those words weren't very tasty as I ate them.

I think it's fair to say that this was one of the most surprising, but enjoyable editions of Countdown I've seen in a long time
10 maxes each and a high standard of words throughout. Bit of a shame for Jill who in a way caused her own downfall right at the start by not going with CURTAILS..........
But nice to see Eileen follow on from John last week in winning after losing so cruelly all those years ago.

Great standard today from both players. 98 is the fourth highest losing score in a prelim.
I too was surprised by Eileen's 3-large pick in R14. But I didn't get 145 and she did, so fair play to her. Hope she wins a few more.

Not meaning to brag but I got a max today.
Just have to get this out there, 'cause it happens, like, almost never. So happy
However great play from both contestants, thoroughly enjoyable. Looks like we've got a cracking finals to look forward to.

I think 75+9*8-100/50 was an alternate solution for final numbers round.
And I also agree that it was a great game today, fantastic stuff from both players.
