COLIN 2013 recaps

Post by Ben Wilson »

I figured a new thread would be best to showcase some of the excitement that went on during the day, and where better to start than the awesome grand final? So, without further ado...

Countdown recap for Saturday 26 January 2013.

C1: Champion Mark Deeks (6 wins, 395 points.)

At only his second COLIN Mark has put in the performance of a lifetime- unbeaten and with a new event record for total points scored, if it weren't for the inconvenience of requiring a grand final, the trophy would already be his. On the way to the final he defeated DC for the final Lauren Hamer, birthday boy Gevin Chapwell, series champion Mark Tournoff (with a tournament high score of 83), last year's runner-up Dinos Sfyris (under somewhat controversial circumstances), and scored back-to-back victories over series champs Ed McCullagh and Jack Worsley- though the latter did take two conundrums. Defeating three series champs in one day is an impressive feat, but if Mark wants the trophy, another stands in his way...

C2: Champion Kirk Bevins (5 wins, 384 points.)

Kirk- who sent his entry fee to me precisely 1 hour and 39 minutes before the deadline- has attended all 9 COLINs (the only person to do so), won 2 of them and finished in the top 5 in 4 more. On the way to the final he defeated Paul Worsley, both members of Rychelle, Matt Morrison and birthday boy Gevin (some present, having to play both the finalists during the day), though he suffered a slight shock in round 2 losing to recent on-screen finalist Rose Boyle. Still though, Kirk's won 4 co-events- one more and he equals the all-time record- and this is Mark's first time in an event final. This final is gonna be a good'un.

DC: Lauren Hamer and everyone else present.
JR: James Robinson.
OT: Other words or solutions.

R01: R O W O M U G R Y
R02: N S S A E I C Y P
R03: R A M E D A W T R
R04: 6, 8, 7, 2, 9, 1. Target: 715.
R05: R V L A U O B I D

R07: N Q L E A A T B D
R08: 75, 3, 4, 8, 6, 10. Target: 696.

Round 1: R O W O M U G R Y

C1: WORRY (5)
C2: GROOM (5)
DC: MORROW (6)
Score: 5–5 (max 6)

Fives apiece as both players miss the darrenic six, though you can attribute that to tiredness.

Round 2: N S S A E I C Y P

C1: paciness
C2: paciness
DC: INSCAPES (8)
Score: 5–5 (max 14)

You can also attribute that to tiredness, I suppose- Kirk noting INSCAPES on his pad but opting for the wrong anagram.

Round 3: R A M E D A W T R

C1: MARRED (6)
C2: AWARDER (7)
Score: 5–12 (max 21)

Kirk more than makes up for it in this round though- this is the third round and so far we've had three darrens, but this is the first one spotted by either player.

Round 4: 6, 8, 7, 2, 9, 1. Target: 715.

C1: 714.
C2: 715. (10)
Score: 5–22 (max 31)

A tricky six small selection sees Kirk extend his lead to 17 points whilst newly-crowned record holder Mark stays on, um, 5 at the break. Incidentally, the order the numbers came out in is just one digit removed from my late grandmother's telephone number.

Round 5: R V L A U O B I D

C1: BOLIVAR (7)
C2: BOLIVAR (7)
Score: 12–29 (max 38)

Fourth letters round, fourth darren, and this time both players are on the ball. Mark makes it to double figures but he still needs to win at least one more round to be in with a chance of lifting the trophy.

Round 6: H O L U S I G J S

C1: SLOUGHS (7)
C2: SOUGHS (6)
Score: 19–29 (max 45)

...And that would be how you do that. Fifth darren in as many letters rounds sees Mark to within 10 of Kirk, though Mark's pronunciation of the word ('slows' to rhyme with 'cows' instead of 'sluffs') did yield some confusion whilst the word was checked.

Round 7: N Q L E A A T B D

C1: ABLATED (7)
C2: ABLATED (7)
OT: DATABLE (7)
Score: 26–36 (max 52)

The all-darrenic game is off, but both players max the round with style.

Round 8: 75, 3, 4, 8, 6, 10. Target: 696.

C1: 696. (10)
C2: 696. (10)
Score: 36–46 (max 62)

Mark goes for a standard 1/5 selection and the gap stays at ten points. The entire hall fills with anticipation as the players stay just 10 points apart. Will this be the greatest comeback of all time or will Kirk add his name- yet again- onto the COLIN spoon of fame/awesome/winningness?

Round 9: H A U G H T R E R

C1 buzzes on 12 seconds to say HEARTHRUG which is correct.
Score: 46–46 (max 72)

BAM! Precisely one second after Mark demands to know when ten seconds remain, hand meets table. HEARTHRUG is the word, and it's right. That's 46-46, so that means that for the sixth time in 127 games, a tie-breaker is needed. The comeback is on...

Round 10: I N D U C T S A M

...

...

...

...Wait for it...

...

...

...

C1 buzzes on 1 second to say DICTAMNUS which is correct.
Score: 56–46 (max 82)

BOOM! And that's how you do that. No hesitation from Mark. From 17 down to the win- especially against a player like Kirk- is an amazing feat, and once we'd picked ourselves up off the floor/scraped ourselves off the ceiling, the winner's trophy found itself safely into the hand of the one and only Mr. Deeks.

Ta Jon - think it's the first max 9-rounder I've had at a Co event. A nice landmark, especially after being denied one on a conundrum by James Robinson at the first CO:LON a couple of years ago.

Anyhow, somehow I managed to maintain my early momentum into my third game. Here's the recap:

Ha, cheers Matt. I did think about re-running the video to check the times, but didn't consider it paramount to the recap.

Anyhow, having watched the clip back, I reckon I buzzed on 8 seconds, and after the restart, Andy's buzz would've been about 10 seconds. So I wasn't far out.
