Countdown recap for Monday 24 September 2012.

Another Monday, another Worsley Recap. :D :D :D

The show starts and Nick mentions that this week is National Cheese Week. Who comes up with this nonsense? Let's get to the game.

C1: Champion Liam Shaw (5 wins, 449 points.) Today he is wearing something far less bright than the waspy outfit he wore on Friday. He's looked fairly strong so far with three scores in the nineties. He's yet to record a century, which surprisingly Nick hasn't reminded him about yet. He was just one point off on Friday though, as he is looking good for a place in the finals.
C2: Challenger Natalie Taylor. A PR and marketing officer from Hartlepool, she works for the Cleveland fire brigade. She has a five-year-old black labrador named Cesar, which she loves taking for walks.
DC: Susie Dent (with sunglasses) and Jennie Bond.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

R01: B H E R O I L O Z
R02: S F A E S R D I N
R03: O M T U D A E R Q
R04: D G U M R G E M O
R05: 75, 25, 5, 3, 9, 2. Target: 124.
TTT: NICEDUET - "No hospital, but he's about to be admitted"
R06: R S A T I O V N I
R07: T E I G A F W P L
R08: T E M D I R S E X
R09: O N A S C E T R A
R10: 25, 50, 3, 3, 6, 7. Target: 790.
TTT: DUGMANOR - "The sort of person who's never quite satisfied"
R11: O K S U E P A C W
R12: N L E O D U G N A
R13: Y C I O T E A V B
R14: 25, 75, 3, 4, 8, 6. Target: 207.
R15: D O G I E T U R N (conundrum)

And now a brief interlude before our main feature:

Enjoy the show.

Round 1: B H E R O I L O Z

C1: BOILER (6)
C2: BOILER (6)
DC: BOOZIER (7) BOLERO (6)
Score: 6–6 (max 7)

DC get the early darren as both players get on the scoreboard.

Round 2: S F A E S R D I N

C1: SARDINES (8)
C2: SANDER (6)
DC: FAIRNESS (8)
OT: ARIDNESS (8) SANSERIF (8)
Score: 14–6 (max 15)

Not sure why Natalie didn't put the other S on her word but it wouldn't have made a difference anyway as Liam takes the lead with a good eight.
SANSERIF is a style of type without serifs.

Round 3: O M T U D A E R Q

C1: MATURED (7)
C2: ROUTED (6)
DC: TORQUED (7)
OT: EQUATOR (7) QUORATE (7)
Score: 21–6 (max 22)

The champ extends his lead by spotting one of the quartet of sevens.

Round 4: D G U M R G E M O

C1: MUGGED (6)
C2: MUGGER (6)
DC: MORGUE (6) GUMMED (6)
OT: DOGGER (6) DROGUE (6) GORGED (6) GOUGED (6) GOUGER (6) GOURDE (6) GRUDGE (6) ROGUED (6) ROUGED (6) RUGGED (6)
Score: 27–12 (max 28)

Six is as good as it gets here and there are plenty to choose from.

Round 5: 75, 25, 5, 3, 9, 2. Target: 124.

C1: 124. 75 + 25 + (5 x 3) + 9 (10)
C2: 124. 75 + 25 + (9 x 3) - (5 - 2) (10)
Score: 37–22 (max 38)

Fairly straightforward as both contestants gain ten points.

Jennie talks about changing her career in 2003 and how she relishes its challenges.

Teatime teaser: NICEDUET -> INDUCTEE

Round 6: R S A T I O V N I

C1: RATIONS (7)
C2: RATIONS (7)
DC: VISITOR (7)
OT: OVARITIS (8)
Score: 44–29 (max 46)

The contestants match each other again with their RATIONS, one of the most common (and probably most boring) Countdown words. DC miss the max though, as Bob and I take the honours. OVARITIS is another term for OOPHORITIS, which is the inflammation of the ovary.

Round 7: T E I G A F W P L

C1: PETAL (5)
C2: PLAIT (5)
DC: PLEAT (5) PLAGE (5) LIGATE (6)
OT: FLEAPIT (7)
Score: 49–34 (max 53)

Only fives for Liam and Natalie, a one six for DC and a seven missed by everyone in the studio. It simply refers to a dirty place.

Round 8: T E M D I R S E X

C1: MIXERS (6)
C2: MISTED (6)
DC: DEMISTER (8)
OT: DEMERITS (8) DIMETERS (8)
Score: 55–40 (max 61)

Jennie explains to Natalie how she could have altered her word slightly for eight points, which would have brought her right back into contention. Unfortunately for her, the gap remains at 15 points, which has been the case since round 3.

Round 9: O N A S C E T R A

C1: ANCESTOR (8)
C2: CORNS (5)
DC: TRANCES (7) CORNETS (7) CARTONS (7)
OT: CATERANS (8) ENACTORS (8)
Score: 63–40 (max 69)

Liam finally extends his lead with this very nice spot, as Natalie can only muster a five.

OoW: Susie talks about "shopping sprees" and how it used to mean something different.

Round 10: 25, 50, 3, 3, 6, 7. Target: 790.

C1: 790. (25 - 6 - 3) x 50 - 7 - 3 (10)
C2: 790. (25 - 6 - 3) x 50 - 7 - 3 (10)
Me: 786
Score: 73–50 (max 79)

Both players solve this numbers game perfectly, which was easier than it looked, as I found out the hard way. :(

Teatime teaser: DUGMANOR -> GOURMAND

Round 11: O K S U E P A C W

C1: SPOKE (5)
C2: POKES (5)
DC: WACKOS (6) COWPEAS (7)
OT: WACKOES (7)
Score: 78–55 (max 86)

A difficult selection here. Five points apiece, as DC find WACKOS (presumably without the E as that's what Rachel put up on the board) but miss the opportunity to add the E for a seven. They do find the only other seven though.
WACKO is an adjective meaning mad or insane and can also be used as a noun, referring to people possessing these qualities.
A COWPEA is a plant of the pea family, cultivated for its edible pods and seeds.

Round 12: N L E O D U G N A

C1: DANGLE (6)
C2: LOUNGED (7)
DC: DUNGEON (7)
OT: DUNNAGE (7) LANGUED (7) UNLADEN (7)
Score: 78–62 (max 93)

Natalie claws back seven points and give her faint hope of launching a late comeback. One more beater will probably be enough to leave her within conundrum-striking distance.

Round 13: Y C I O T E A V B

C1: CAVITY (6)
C2: BOATIE (6)
DC: ACTIVE (6) ICEBOAT (7)
OT: OBVIATE (7)
Score: 84–68 (max 100)

Two rounds left and the game has not yet been won by Liam. Hopefully the final numbers game will make it interesting.

Round 14: 25, 75, 3, 4, 8, 6. Target: 207.

C1: 207. 25 x 8 + 4 + 3 (10)
C2: 207. 25 x 8 + 4 + 3 (10)
Score: 94–78 (max 110)

Sadly it doesn't as both players get it with ease, to make it 30/30 for both on numbers today. That doesn't happen very often. Liam has win number six safe in the bag now. Can he get his first century?

Round 15: D O G I E T U R N

C1 buzzes on 5 seconds to say DETOURING which is correct.
Final Score: 104–78 (max 120)

Yes he can! After a fairly difficult set of conundrums last week, it's nice to see a simpler one. Liam is currently fourth on the leaderboard, behind octochamps Paul James and Chris Marshall, as well as seven-time-winner Grant Waters. If he wins again tomorrow, I believe his potential octochamp game will be against Jessica Pratesi, which could be tough. I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure she's on this week. I believe James will be capping tomorrow's episode, so join him to find out if Liam can take another step towards octochampdom.

See you soon for another edition of the Worsley Recap. Until then, cheerio. ;)

I'd say they definitely offered WACKOS as a six because (a) that's what Rach put up and (b) Susie said afterwards "we've also got a seven: COWPEAS" (or something very similar). Odd though, as they presumably checked it in the dictionary.

Good point, thanks for that. I've updated it to just WACKOS but the wiki article still says DC got WACKOES, perhaps it should be changed.

WACKOES should not have been removed completely from the others column. It just needs an asterisk by it to indicate that DC didn't get it.

Oops, my bad, as they say these days. It's fixed now.
