Countdown recap for Tuesday 29 May 2012.

Good afternoon! :) I'm back on Tuesday recapping duty until the end of this series. We've now only just over three weeks to wait until the Series 66 finals are broadcast...

C1: Champion Suzi Purcell (3 wins, 271 points) - a shop assistant-cum-artist from Market Harborough. She's looked impressive in her three shows so far, notching up 106 points on Friday.
C2: Challenger Nicole Sharples. - a maths student from Leyland, Lancs. She's studying at the University of Leicester and is a massive Friends fan.
DC: Susie Dent and Jon Culshaw.

Nick's harping on about his tractors again and is still trying to persuade Rachel to travel to her wedding in one! Apparently, it's been reported that Rachel's dad is refusing to walk her down the aisle if it clashes with the footie. :?
Enjoy the show.

Round 1: L A N H I G E P K

C1: HELPING (7)
C2: LEAPING (7)
DC: HEALING (7) HANKIE (6)
OT: LEPAKING (8)
Score: 7–7 (max 8)

A fair start from all parties, and you can probably forgive them all for missing the darrenic 8.
LEPAKING means to aimlessly laze or loiter around in SE Asian countries.

Round 2: S V E L N A S I N

C1: INSANE (6)
C2: SNAILS (6)
DC: SNIVELS (7)
OT: ALEVINS (7), NIVASES (7), SALINES (7), SILANES (7), SNAVELS (7), SNAVLES (7), VALISES (7)
Score: 13–13 (max 15)

Still nothing to separate the contestants, but DC can go one better with SNIVELS, prompting a Terry Wogan impression from Jon :D

Round 3: R E C M A S T I U

C1: MUSTIER (7)
C2: MASTER (6)
DC: MATURES (7) CERASTIUM (18)
Score: 20–13 (max 33)

Suzi breaks the deadlock, but the fine nine-spotting form continues in the Corner.
CERASTIUM is a plant of a genus that includes chickweed and snow-in-summer. Answers on a postcard, please, all you horticulturists! :)

Round 4: P M W E R O A I N

C1: MANPOWER (8)
C2: wimper
OT: AIRWOMEN (8)
Score: 28–13 (max 41)

Suzi impresses with one of the eights available.

Round 5: 50, 75, 8, 10, 9, 1. Target: 124.

C1: 124. 75+50-1 (10)
C2: 124. 75+50-1 (10)
Score: 38–23 (max 51)

Jon's anecdote includes good impressions of Tony Blair, Ian Hislop and Ozzy Osbourne.

Teatime teaser: CADPETER -> CARPETED

Round 6: Q E O N R T A L I

C1: RELATION (8)
C2: RATION (6)
DC: ORIENTAL (8)
Score: 46–23 (max 59)

Our good friends RELATION and ORIENTAL are back, but Nicole is stuck on six.

Round 7: J A S S O T R A E

C1: ASSERT (6)
C2: STORES (6)
DC: TOSSER (6) jassotrae
OT: SERTAOS (7)
Score: 52–29 (max 66)

Jon believes that 'jassotrae' should be a Scottish word for nonsense!
Another missed darren - SERTAOS are arid regions of scrub in Brazil. (one of those squiggly accents that I don't know the name of should be above the A :? )

Round 8: F T R D I O E A H

C1: FROTHED (7)
C2: HATRED (6)
DC: ADROIT (6) diehard
Score: 59–29 (max 73)

Surprising that nothing else was available, and Suzi's getting away now.

Round 9: B A M Z U G I O T

C1: BOUT (4)
C2: zumba
DC: AGOUTI (6)
OT: GAMBIT (6)
Score: 63–29 (max 79)

Nicole's punt is sadly yet to make the dictionary, Suzi might rue not adding an A to the start of her word, and DC find the popular six.

OoW: Susie talks about some words that have origins along the lines of 'passing wind' - feisty, pumpernickel and aubergine.

Round 10: 75, 25, 100, 5, 3, 9. Target: 438.

C1: 437.
C2: 438. 5*100-(75-25)-9-3 (10)
Score: 63–39 (max 89)

Nicole uses her maths prowess to bridge the gap a little.

Teatime teaser: BIGREADS -> ABRIDGES

Round 11: C E P D A T L E O

C1: TADPOLE (7)
C2: LOCATED (7)
DC: PEDALO (6) POLECAT (7)
OT: ADOPTEE (7) CLEATED (7) PLEATED (7)
Score: 70–46 (max 96)

A reasonably flat round here, and the two animalia declarations prompt an impression of Sir David Attenbrough :D

Round 12: D S N I E R Y V A

C1: VINEYARD (8)
C2: SANDIER (7)
DC: VINEYARDS (18) ADVISER (7) INVADERS (8)
Score: 78–46 (max 114)

A cracking spot from Suzi, but if she'd added the S she would have sealed the game! You get the feeling that was a 29.9 second spot.

Round 13: D O N R I B D U O

C1: BOUND (5)
C2: BOUND (5)
DC: BOUDIN (6) BOUDOIR (7)
OT: BOURDON (7) BRIDOON (7)
Score: 83–51 (max 121)

No nines on offer here though, so Suzi can breathe easy having sealed win no.4.
BOUDIN is a French type of black pudding.
BOURDON is a low-pitched stop in an organ or harmonium, typically a stopped diapason of 16-foot pitch. Answers on a postcard, please, musicians! :D
BRIDOON (which I should know about, but don't) is a snaffle bit frequently used with a curb bit in a double bridle.

Round 14: 75, 25, 100, 3, 5, 4. Target: 659.

C1: 645.
C2: 662. Mistake in working. (actually 663)
OT: 660. (3+4+25+100)*5 (7)
Score: 83–51 (max 128)

Everyone is foxed by this one, with 660 the closest possible answer.

Round 15: N E T T G R E E D

C1 buzzes on 15 seconds to say DETERGENT which is correct.
Final Score: 93–51 (max 138)

Another conundrum for Suzi and a fourth victory, which sees her take 8th position on the leaderboard, knocking off Chris Butler. Win or lose, tomorrow is likely to see her leapfrogging Alison Shipman into 7th as well. You'd have to fancy seeing her in the finals now.

Raw score: 100-76
Maxes: 6-3

James is away sunning himself in Italy (despite the fact he could be sunning himself in 'uddersfield), so join Jack tomorrow for the recap. :)

Meanwhile, I'll be back with another recap next Tuesday, so join me then - you be sure of it! :D

Score: 13–13 (max 16)

Still nothing to separate the contestants, but DC can go one better with SNIVELS, prompting a Terry Wogan impression from Jon :D
Another darrenic 8 goes missed, however.
It turns out VAINNESS isn't in the dictionary. Looks like an error in aptodic.
