It's Pancake Day! Nick talks about a Canadian tradition of burying things in pancakes.

Round 1: W S N P I O A E G

C1: WEAPONS (7)
C2: wasping
DC: wasping AGONISE (7) SPEWING (7)
OT: AGONIES (7) PIGEONS (7) SOAPING (7) SPAEING (7) WIGEONS (7)
Score: 7–0 (max 7)

Apparently you can't wasp, so Peter takes a lead by finding one of a number of legal sevens. SPAEING is an old Scottish term meaning to predict.

Round 2: T J T A U M L E A

C1: MUTATE (6)
C2: METAL (5)
DC: AMULET (6) MALATE (6)
OT: MATATU (6) MULETA (6) TAMALE (6)
Score: 13–0 (max 13)

Peter finds probably the least obscure of the sixes.
A MATATU is a mini-bus, taxi or similar vehicle in East Africa.
A MULETA is a red-cloth fixed to a stick, used in bull-fighting.
And a TAMALE is a Mexican dish of seasoned meat and maize flour steamed or baked in maize husks.
Who says English isn't interesting! 8-)

Round 3: L G N S I E A R A

C1: LAIRAGES (8)
C2: gearing
OT: GERANIAL (8) RAILAGES (8) REALIGNS (8) REGALIAN (8) RESIGNAL (8) SANGRAIL (8) SANGREAL (8) SLANGIER (8)
Score: 21–0 (max 21)

Peter's on top form, and Gareth's seeing double.
A LAIRAGE is a place where cattle or sheep may be rested on the way to market or slaughter.

Round 4: T P T O U E V A E

C1: TEAPOT (6)
C2: POUT (4)
DC: TOUPEE (6)
OT: PATTEE (6) PUTTEE (6)
Score: 27–0 (max 27)

Gareth can't get out the starting blocks as Peter spots a topical word.
A PUTTEE is a strip of cloth wound around the ankle to the knee for protection and support.

Round 5: 75, 2, 4, 5, 4, 6. Target: 426.

C1: 426. (75-4)*6 (10)
C2: 426. 6*75-(2+4)*4 (10)
Score: 37–10 (max 37)

A simple enough numbers round sees Gareth get on the board.

Ann talks about a documentary she made about Moses and the law.

Teatime teaser: SOLDAPET -> TADPOLES

Round 6: N G S I A E K C U

C1: CAUSING (7)
C2: SACKING (7)
DC: SACKING (7) SUCKING (7)
OT: CEASING (7) GUINEAS (7) SAUCING (7) SINKAGE (7)
Score: 44–17 (max 44)

Rather horizontal.

Round 7: D C N D O A E R O

C1: CROONED (7)
C2: DEACON (6)
DC: CORDONED (8)
Score: 51–17 (max 52)

The Corner find their first darren of the say with CORDONED, but Peter's so far impressive max game is blown out of the water.

Round 8: P R L S I Q E E X

C1: EXPIRES (7)
C2: EXPIRES (7)
DC: REPLIES (7)
OT: PREXIES (7) SPIELER (7)
Score: 58–24 (max 59)

Sevens all round here.

Round 9: L R M Y A O A D O

C1: MAYORAL (7)
C2: ROOMY (5)
OT: ARMLOAD (7)
Score: 65–24 (max 66)

And Peter is pulling further clear now with the impressive MAYORAL.

OoW - Susie talks about the origins of SYBARITE and a French word that I didn't quite catch...

Round 10: 50, 9, 10, 2, 7, 5. Target: 203.

C1: 202. (5+9-10)*50+2 (7)
C2: 203. Mistake in working.
RR: 203. (9-5)*50+10-7 (10)
Score: 72–24 (max 76)

Very bad editing here as Gareth tries to make a 4, and is cut straight off when he can't.
I was surprised that Peter missed the dead-on solution there too.

Teatime teaser: BEATTHUD -> HEADBUTT

Round 11: R T T S U O E I T

C1: outtires
C2: tortiest
DC: RUTTIEST (8)
Score: 72–24 (max 84)

Gareth's failure to score means he needs to be perfect from now and hope that Peter falls apart...

Round 12: Z B H S E O E F N

C1: ZONES (5)
C2: SHONE (5)
OT: BONZES (6) FOEHNS (6)
Score: 77–29 (max 90)

...and a max of 6 here means that Peter's won.
BONZES are Japanese or Chinese Buddhist religious teachers.
FOEHNS are hot southerly winds on the northern slopes of the Alps.

Round 13: R D M L A I A V R

C1: ADMIRAL (7)
C2: DIAL (4)
DC: ARRIVAL (7)
Score: 84–29 (max 97)

Both sevens are spotted here.

Round 14: 25, 3, 7, 10, 1, 8. Target: 516.

C1: 515.
C2: 516. 7*3*25-(8+1) (10)
Score: 84–39 (max 107)

Peter's not that hot on the numbers today and Gareth takes advantage.

Round 15: I C E D D O N U T

C2 buzzes on 14 seconds to say DEDUCTION which is correct.
Final Score: 84–49 (max 117)

And so Gareth bridges the deficit considerably at the death but it's nowhere near enough to prevent Peter from gaining a second win.

Final score 84-49
Raw score 91-73
Maxes 9-5

So until next time, good afternoon :)
