Spoilers for Thursday September 1st 2011
We have an exciting day here on Countdown today. Not only could Dave Taylor become an octochamp today, but if he does so, he will be the first non-apterite octochamp since Brian Selway all the way back in October of 2009, a gap of nearly two years. exciting stuff methinks.

Well played Dave. Was I the only one who thought that Richard had a resemblance to John Malkovich? Some nice beaters out there include INARCHES (round 7), and UROPOD (round 13). BOUVIERS was a nice DC equaller in round 1 too.

Re: Spoilers for Thursday September 1st 2011
I was thinking he would make a good cool criminal or spy in a film, but I can see what you mean. SHOWMEN and TONTINE as equallers wherever.Josh Hurst wrote:Well played Dave. Was I the only one who thought that Richard had a resemblance to John Malkovich?
Good contest, and well done to Dave - very entertaining.

Actually, come to think of it, I never got the chance to discuss apterous with Dave. I wonder does he even know it exists?

Re: Spoilers for Thursday September 1st 2011
I'm very pleased Dave did so well, he came across as a thoroughly likeable guy, unlike the oppo in his 8th game who was a decent player but just didn't seem to tune into the banter around the studio at all.
Having said that Cillian came across very well too the previous day and it's a shame that he didn't nick it; Dave would almost certainly still have come back as a seed.

A very nice octochamp run by Dave there. Shame I had to watch on catch-up, but it does mean a mega-morsel of Countdown, which is never a bad thing.
Interesting nerdy statistics: The last 5 octochamps, that's the 3 from this series and Tom and Andy from the last one, all started their octochamp runs on a Tuesday.

Having nothing better to do with my Saturday evening, I've got the data from Mike Brown's Octochamps and Viscounts page, added Dave Taylor's information, fed it through a bit of Perl and got the start days of all the octochamps and viscounts:James Robinson wrote:Interesting nerdy statistics: The last 5 octochamps, that's the 3 from this series and Tom and Andy from the last one, all started their octochamp runs on a Tuesday.

If my run had not started on a Tuesay I doubt I would have been able to beome an octochamp because both recording days I was really tired going into my fourth game of the day and could not have managed a fifth. Maybe the second game of the day slot is the best opportunity to be an octochamp.James Robinson wrote: The last 5 octochamps, that's the 3 from this series and Tom and Andy from the last one, all started their octochamp runs on a Tuesday.

Over the years, Monday has been the most octochampful day at 41, with the other weekdays clustering around the 30 mark. Paul Howe has the distinction of being the only octochamp ever to start his run on a Saturday.Code: Select all
