Re: No Countdown next week :(
What Ben meant (I think) was that he thought that the thread was going to become inactive, in other words noone posts in it any more. The point of this thread was to note Countdown's off-the-air dates, which are now passed so the next time really any posts need to be posted in here is when Countdown is on it's next break.Jason Larsen wrote:Ben, Ben, Ben!

Because I'm bored and because I'm a pedant, I'm going to have to correct your incorrect use of "its".Joseph Bolas wrote: it's next break.

Because I'm bored and because I'm a pedant I'll fully explain! "Its" meaning "belonging to it" requires no apostrophe just like the possessive pronouns "his" and "her". Its tempting to put one there because if you said for example, "Joseph's declaration was INSOLATED" you would use an apostrophe. However "it's" meaning "it is" does require an apostrophe in the same way you put one in "aren't" and "didn't".Kirk Bevins wrote:Because I'm bored and because I'm a pedant, I'm going to have to correct your incorrect use of "its".Joseph Bolas wrote: it's next break.

It wouldn't be me if I didn't make a mistake somewhereKirk Bevins wrote:Because I'm bored and because I'm a pedant, I'm going to have to correct your incorrect use of "its".Joseph Bolas wrote: it's next break.
Luckily I am going back to LearnDirect to redo an English Grammar course, so it looks like I am going to need it

I still have to stop and think about the difference every time. It's bloody annoying!Dinos Sfyris wrote:Because I'm bored and because I'm a pedant I'll fully explain! I also find it annoying that "one's" requires an apostrophe even when it's functioning as a pronoun, e.g. "to put all one's eggs in one basket".

Doesn't this thread belong under "off-topic" ? - though presumably words with apostrophes are disallowed.
BTW, GBShaw never used them, as he didnt (sic) consider them necessary.

I've heard someone else say that before. I don't find it annoying though. It's just an indication that it is not a "proper" pronoun on the standard list in the sky.Charlie Reams wrote:I also find it annoying that "one's" requires an apostrophe even when it's functioning as a pronoun, e.g. "to put all one's eggs in one basket".
