Re: Feature requests
Yea, figured there might be coding difficulties with this, especially as you'd have to alter the GUI in some way. I quite like the "conundrum" version actually, especially if it can be adapted to numbers (pick targets at random until one that's obtainable comes up, then you "buzz" clicking the first number in your solution). The patience bar would probably have to be shortened a fair bit, though.Charlie Reams wrote:Yeah I still like this idea, but it would be pretty difficult to actually implement.Jon O'Neill wrote:The %age of rounds where there is actually a 9 being what it is might make this a little redundant though because it's so similar to the regular format.Steve Balog wrote:I have a bit of a bizarre idea for a new format. It came to me when I caught one of those "[name] got a 9 from GANDISEEG, can you?" messages in chat and got the answer, but realised that if I didn't know there was a 9 I'd never have declared it from the selection.
It works just like a normal game, scoring and all but with one difference: There's an indicator on screen that, after the selection, tells you whether or not a 9 is possible with the selection. I definitely attack conundrums differently from typical letters, so that knowledge might cause a player to attack a letters set differently, for better or worse.
Numbers works similarly: The indicators, after the numbers are selected, tells you whether the target is exactly obtainable or not.
Conundrums are the same. No way to adapt this idea to those rounds.
I don't know, I might be drunk off my ass and this is a fucking idiotic idea (with coding issues, to boot) but I'd figure there's no harm in throwing it out there.
However, it does give rise to an idea that may have been mentioned already on here.. that you get told the max as soon as the ninth letter appears, and then conundrum rules take over with the first person getting a word of that length winning the round.
And yea, looking at the stats page only about 5% of rounds have a 9, which is a lot lower than I'd thought. It might be more interesting in junior formats, where being told there's a 7 in BASJKMO could lead to hilarity.

Yea, that's it. Saw it declared in DC on a really ragged selection a while back and almost lost it, especially since I had unlasting disallowed a couple rounds before
been looking for a spot to declare it or its plural ever since but never seen one yet

Maybe instead it could tell you the what the max in each round is, like an 8 or so.Steve Balog wrote:I have a bit of a bizarre idea for a new format. Yea definitely do this. I've seen an accidental Dutch conundrum attack and hilarity ensued.Gavin Chipper wrote:When you're selecting a custom game, could English rather than Dutch be the default language?
As for the "give the max" -- it depends. I mean, in the normal game, some rounds are going to be very easy (100 4 5 8 2 1 -> 200, or QDRANIIGN) and the same would happen here. It might lead to interesting spots if the max is an obscure word.
It really is all in the coding though -- if it's hard to code it's moot.

At the end of the current series, can we have an update of Classic Games to include Series 62-64 and also Watchword items for Series 63-64? Any suggestions for Watchwords for S63 and S64 contestants? (If the Classic Games thing will take forever to do, I don't mind helping out a bit).

Sorry if this has been suggested before-I haven't read the whole thread. Have you considered a handicap option? This would be useful for tournaments but also for inviting friends and relatives to Apterous so they'd be on a level playing field. You could either have the worse player have a head start of 23 points, for example. Alternatively (and I'm sure this would be harder to code so feel free to ignore this), you could add 1 to the lesser player's number of letters in the word and have that number be considered for the score, so for the worse player a 5 would be a 6.

A suggestion (Probably a bit crap but oh well): Something where you get lots of letters (about 27) and you have to make the longest word who's letters are in the selection IN THAT ORDER, e.g. from the selection ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ the best I could come up with was AEGILOPS.
Edit: Just realised AEGILOPS isn't in, but you get the idea.

Re: Feature requests
It would be pretty cool if there was a statland page (or maybe one for superstats?) which, like the page for "top players (by vowel count)" for example, gave % of time one achieves the max for each length of word. Like the other pages of this type, if you decide to do it, I'm guessing it would be best done over the past 30 days in standard 30 second letters rounds. I think it would be quite good to know how often people can get a nine when one is available. Also, it could show whether players who are good at getting words from fruitful selections are also good at getting awkward smaller words from pretty poor selections. Just a thought.

Re: Feature requests
You can always just do something like GoatLock or something (if it's possible to just mash the code together, if not just ignore this) where you have to use the first letter and the chosen letter at the end. Maybe you have to use all "larges" chosen by the player in numbers -- like you pick 2 big, you must use both, if 6 small, it plays like Omelette, etc. Though, if you use both goatdown and lockdown rules for conundrums, you basically get a touchdown conundrum where you get 15 seconds as a lockdown one after time is up. Huh. The 1/10 chance the dud is the hidden letter though could lead to hilarity.Charlie Reams wrote:I don't think I'm really going to do this every month, there just isn't enough time in the day.Thomas Carey wrote:Soory about my impatience, but wasn't there meant to be a new variant 11 days ago?
EDIT: Just realised though that if a player gets ahead he can just be a dick and pick Q every letters round to keep the score low. Maybe only allow each 9th letter to be picked once per game?
EDIT2: Also realised that you might have to add words manually, and unique puzzles of that sort might be hard. You could make it a touchdown conundrum that switches the false letter to the right one and gives and extra half time for 7 points like in goatdown.
EDIT3: Also the option to change your default numbers selection (what you pick if you just hit enter on the selection window) would be nice if there isn't one. I mean, it sucks when talking to people in chat and I hit enter right when the window pops up and I pick fucking 1 big which is the worst numbers. (Also, this may or may not have something to do with a rather ridiculously stupid game I just started, just saying)

Re: Feature requests
Perhaps set it so one gets the normal difficulty stone if they solve a conundrum in 30 seconds in the normal set but on a different variant. Like, recently got my first ever 10/10 conundrum, but it was in Goatdown before the last letter was revealed for hell-if-I-know-how-I-got-that reason. (Of course, if you'd get it afterwards, it wouldn't count, because it wasn't in the 30 seconds.)Mark James wrote:Can we have conundrum stones for the other variants please?
Or add an "unidentified rock" item for either 9-lettter conundrums in other variants not in the normal set, or those you just added that haven't been properly rated yet.

Re: Feature requests
I've long since thought the nasty conundrums should have something like a 'bag of gravel' for spots that are plurals and 'a piece of neutronium' or something or other for too-hard-for diamond conundrums. Also because it's annoying getting great spots like that and not having a reward for it (I think dogfight doesn't award you stones either, can't remember for sure).Mark James wrote:Can we have conundrum stones for the other variants please?

Re: Feature requests
Two requests please and both cos I'm properly lazy
For the first (sorry to the probably dozen people that are likely to have said this before me but I couldn't find it in a search): could it automatically give you the Duel after midnight without having to log out and back in, please? I know two mouse clicks and a small move seems a small price to pay, but it's just tidier. It also has the bonus of letting you know your watch is slow (bloody Rotaries).
Secondly, in Lexplorer if a word's a conundrum could it please display the difficulty somewhere obvious at the top, rather than having to find it as a conundrum in a game, to find out you spent 28.7 seconds on a gypsum in games without stones awarded? This might be expanded to show which words are given trinkets, although I can see why that might be a bad idea and take out some of the 'wtf's that for?' fun.
'Nuff thinking for one night; it's never a good idea

The technology! Can computers really do that? What will they think of next? Computers that can talk to each other? It'll never catch on - never!Gavin Chipper wrote:Two? Re: Feature requests
The "conundrum search" feature already does this. If you click Show, at the top of the tab it shows the conundrum's hardness. "Showing 107 games with SHITSTORM (hardness: 1/10) as a conundrum"Lesley Hines wrote:Secondly, in Lexplorer if a word's a conundrum could it please display the difficulty somewhere obvious at the top, rather than having to find it as a conundrum in a game, to find out you spent 28.7 seconds on a gypsum in games without stones awarded?
However, I think there's an arguable case for it to display the hardness at the top of the page as you say along with the validity and the estimated obscurity, so you don't have to click Show on the conundrum search tab. This would mean someone who just wants to know a conundrum's difficulty rating doesn't have to make a useless query about when it was solved in past games.

Re: Feature requests
On the game archive pages could the players ratings be what they were at the start of the game instead of after the game?

I've been thinking the same, except that it could be both rather than simply before or after.Mark James wrote:On the game archive pages could the players ratings be what they were at the start of the game instead of after the game?
Also, is there a way to see someone's Prorank position from their profile page? If not, that would be pretty good.

Re: Feature requests
This game is a good example of why I think conundrums need to be "unrated" for the first few times they show up instead of defaulted to 2/10 -- honestly if I were facing a crucial and it was some word I've never heard of that was just added to the list, it'd be a major buzzkill. This was just in a recent duel and a total of 2 people got it, one of which looks like a "hell with it I have one second left let's just guess" solve.
Add that easier (1-3/10) conundrums are more likely in games against newer or lower rated players and you can see where a couple of these types of endings to close games can turn potential new players away.
