Apterous Winter Closed Round 5
Those of you who read the round 4 thread may have noticed a relatively large number of missed connections last week. Based on my examination of the record, I only gave forfeit losses to two people: Ben Cooke and Miriam Nussbaum (who funnily enough were paired against each other in the main event). Most of the rest were set out as draws, although a chunk of games in Flight A are simply repurposed for this week (since they made up most of the one-point players anyway). The round-robin type events, like the Speed, can keep on chugging away anyway with those missed games made up over the next two weeks.
This week finishes up the preliminary round-robin in the Championship Flight and Flight B. Playoffs will occur during week 6: people in the Championship Flight will play the other two same-place finishers; in Flight B, everybody within one point of the leader (a/k/a James Leroux) will be involved.
The Speed Demon continues for three more games (two this week, one next).
Flight A and the Junior Mint have two rounds to go in the Swiss format.
You can find the games in the the usual place.

Junior Mint: Kirk Bevins 2-1 Ryan Taylor
Game 1: Kirk Bevins 72-82 Ryan Taylor
Game 2: Kirk Bevins 101-91 Ryan Taylor
Game 3: Kirk Bevins 96-90 Ryan Taylor
Both just happy to get these out the way and all games sum up just how pointless junior is.
Main Championship: Kirk Bevins 2-0 Ryan Taylor
Game 1: Kirk Bevins 114-75 Ryan Taylor
Game 2: Kirk Bevins 87-64 Ryan Taylor
First game was a Kirk masterclass (and he had FINICAL which would have been a max game).
Second game was not a Kirk masterclass.

Re: Apterous Winter Closed Round 5
Main Event:
Playoff for first, two Northern Irishmen
Edward McCullagh - 2 - 0 - Eoin Monaghan
Game 1: Ed - 116 - 113 - Eoin
I took the lead near the end with DAYTIME however Ed stole in front of me with the conundrum, very close game.
Game 2: Ed - 109 - 102 - Eoin
This again was very close with DAYTIME making another appearance. However, Ed and his 6 small give him a 10 point lead before a 7 left him in a nice position. He stuck with 1 large this time though and it was easy, before I saved some dignity with a very late conundrum spot.
Brilliant games Ed, well played.

Speed Round 4F:
Jim Bentley 91 - 88 Chris Hare
Not exactly top quality maxes-wise but top quality to play. I was lucky to spot the conundrum, nine times out of ten I'd miss it. Cheers Chris!

Incredibly tense game, and I can't help but feel I was somewhat fortunate to win. Well played Ben.

Flight A:
I managed to beat Apterous Nude 2-0, but it was the worst I've played for a long time. I honestly have no idea what happened to me in the second game. Pleasing to come back though!

Main Event
Garner 1 Gillard 2
Garner 96 Gillard 93
Garner 90 Gillard 93
Garner 89 Gillard 99
Three very close games. I'm relieved to pull through (I think) as group winner, finishing with a higher game difference than Kirk and Adam, also on 3 wins.
Speed Daemon - Pool Elite
Sfyris 76 Garner 77
Another extremely close game there. I was beaten to all 4 conundrums in these two matches.

Re: Apterous Winter Closed Round 5
So does this mean it didn't bite me in the ass? Cos I tried pretty hard to get hold of Lloyd, nothing more than hanging around every day and not seeing him and e-mailing him and getting no response that I could have done.Andrew Feist wrote:Those of you who read the round 4 thread may have noticed a relatively large number of missed connections last week. This week's Junior against Peter Lee:
2-0 to me, 103 - 80 and 80 - 75.

Ryan Taylor 104-82 James Robinson
I feel each day I am getting worse on apterous but this game gave me a confidence boost and also had some nice spots in like HOOKLET and MONDAINE from James.

Re: Apterous Winter Closed Round 5
The clash of the Junior Mint undefeateds
Dinos Sfyris 1 - 2 Ed McCullagh
First 2 games were standard max-1ers leading to a "Who can press "?" quickest" competition. The 3rd game looked like we were off to an epic high score kicking off with all 7s in the first 3 rounds. I pursued a false 4th seven and then embarrassingly missed THONG and JOINTS leaving Ed to take a crucial lead. A few nice words along the way: PIANI, SUDSIER, MADCAP but the winner was definitely WAQF. Well played Ed
Here are the games:
Game 1: Dinos 125 - 115 Ed
Game 2: Ed 120 - 110 Dinos
Game 3: Dinos 112 - 118 Ed

Keep missing Martyn Simpson whenever he's on the site and he hasn't responded to my emails so our flight A matches are still incomplete.
