Any recaps from older series should be posted here. This forum is unlikely to contain spoilers, but recaps may contain "forward references" if they are written much later, so approach with caution.

Tuesday 12 January 1993 (COC VI Grand Final)

Post by Mike Brown »

Countdown recap for Tuesday 12 January 1993 (COC VI Grand Final)

C1: Champion Chris Waddington (13 wins, 793 points.)
C2: Champion Wayne Summers (10 wins, 584 points.)
DC: Susie Dent and Richard Stilgoe.
CV: Carol Vorderman.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Continuing my quest to replace some old TCP recaps with the modern equivalent, it’s now the turn of the sixth Championship of Champions final to get the treatment. Series 22 champion Chris Waddington arrived unbeaten having knocked out Jackie McLeod and Robert Teuton to get there, while his opponent, Series 24 winner Wayne Summers, had seen off Phil Jordan and Fiona Willis to get to the same point. The arbiter for the day was the 8th edition of the Concise Oxford Dictionary, so if you happen to have one to hand, grab it now and we’ll get going...

At the start of the show, Richard notes that 4.75 million people tuned in to the Series 24 grand final, and also that the finalists of this C of C would get crystal bowls of differing sizes, while all the other participants would take home appropriately-engraved paperweights. But, of course, it’s all about the kudos of taking part...

Round 1: P T G E I A V R L

C1: PRIVATE (7)
C2: PRIVATE (7)
DC: PREVAIL (7) VIRGATE (7)
Score: 7–7 (max 7)

Round 2: S B E O P N M N U

C1: MOPES (5)
C2: BONUS (5)
DC: UMBONES (7)
Score: 12–12 (max 14)

Round 3: 75, 25, 100, 5, 4, 2. Target: 944.

C1: 943. ((5+4)x(100+2))+25 (7)
C2: 943. ((5+4)x(100+2))+25 (7)
CV: 943. ((5+4)x(100+2))+25 (7)
OT: 944. (((75x25)+5)/2)+4 (10)
Score: 19–19 (max 24)

At the time, I didn’t think this was possible... but it is!

Round 4: R P S I O E R G R

C1: GROPERS (7)
C2: GROPERS (7)
DC: SORRIER (7)
OT: GORSIER (7) GRIPERS (7) PORGIES (7) PROSIER (7)
Score: 26–26 (max 31)

Round 5: W Y U J F A I V X

C1: WAIF (4)
C2: WAVY (4)
DC: WAXY
Score: 30–30 (max 35)

After the F came out, Wayne utters “brilliant” and he’s ‘right’, it isn’t.

Round 6: 25, 5, 3, 10, 5, 3. Target: 379.

C1: 378.
C2: 379. ((10+5)x25)+5-(3/3) (10)
Score: 30–40 (max 45)

Round 7: M A N Y C H A T S

No one buzzes. The answer was YACHTSMAN.
Score: 30–40 (max 55)

A conundrum worthy of the final unsurprisingly foxes them both. Before the break, Richard Stilgoe does his customary anagramming for Chris Waddington - “Inching towards D.” and “Wing/Cdr. Thinsoda” are the results.

Round 8: D N C A E S H K I

C1: CANDIES (7)
C2: CANDIES (7)
DC: ECHIDNAS (8) SKINHEAD (8)
Score: 37–47 (max 63)

Great work from DC.

Round 9: M D S A E A U G S

DC: MEDUSA (6) ASSUAGED (8) MASSAGED (8) SAUSAGE (7)
Score: 45–47 (max 71)

Round 10: 50, 3, 7, 7, 9, 3. Target: 634.

C1: 635.
C2: 634. ((7+3+3)x50)-7-9 (10)
Score: 45–57 (max 81)

Round 11: W C R E I T D E N

C1: RECITED (7)
C2: CENTRED (7)
DC: WINTERED (8)
Score: 52–64 (max 89)

Round 12: G L T I A E Z R S

C1: GLAZIERS (8)
C2: GLAZIEST (8)
OT: REGALIST (8)
Score: 60–72 (max 97)

Don’t go trying GLAZIEST these days; Susie will disallow it.

Round 13: 100, 7, 5, 10, 5, 10. Target: 563.

C1: 562. ((100+10)x5)+7+5 (7)
C2: 562. ((100+10)x5)+7+5 (7)
OT: 563. ((100-5)x(5+(10/10)))-7 (10)
Score: 67–79 (max 107)

Carol states “no – I don’t think it’s possible”, but on this occasion she’s wrong, ‘cos it is.

Round 14: P A R D O N M E E

No one buzzes. The answer was PROMENADE.
Score: 67–79 (max 117)

Richard points out that this is Chris’s first ever defeat on Countdown, to which the bearded one replies “relief at last”. Richard Stilgoe rounds off proceedings with his anagrams for Wayne Summers, which are “E. News Summary” and “Seesaw ‘n’ Rummy”. I prefer fish ‘n’ chips myself. See you shortly for more C of C recap madness!

Are the words in boxes/squares on the right side of the recap OT words? I've been interpreting them as DC words all along.
I'm not dead yet. In a rut right now because of stress from work. I'll be back later in S89. I also plan to bring back the Mastergram - if I can find a way to run a timer or clock through pure MediaWiki without having to upload to Vimeo every time.
