Really? I've read plenty that seem entirely plausible (especially when considered alongside stories I've heard from friends who've worked in similar jobs).

Excellent video. I've seen it before (having seen almost all of TED's offerings) but it was good to watch again. I think it should be compulsory viewing for all policy makers in education.

I haven't watched the video (tl;dw) but couldn't you have an exceptionally short game by opening with some ridiculous 'deal' (e.g. "I'll pay you £1500 if you guarantee me that if you get hotels on Mayfair I can stay there free") which leaves you with no money, and then rolling a 4? Are there any rules about what deals you can/can't strike?

I don't think it mentions deals in the rules, so I guess that means you can't strike any deals, in the same way you can't strike deals in Scrabble, for example.

Really? So you can't swap Mayfair for Regent Street + £100, and shit like that? In my experience games would never end without such deals.

The official Monopoly game I had on my PC a few years back allowed you to make deals, that's all I know.
But yeah including deals would make for a pretty pointless video.

I vaguely remember the rules saying something along the lines of you can make your own house rules with regards to trading properties between each other and bartering over price etc so it is acceptable. However the video demonstrates the quickest way to lose the game just by landing on certain spaces, buying properties, getting certain cards etc where all prices are fixed.

Yeah, there is the old house rules caveat. Well you can just as quickly say, let's make a deal, you lose, and if it's agreed, the game's over. I had a quick look for tournament monopoly rules, but didn't find anything concrete. They do have a World Championships don't they?

They might, but surely it would be pretty pointless. I can't imagine there being players that can consistently beat others. Too much luck.

They do indeed, I remember reading an article about it in the Sunday Times many years ago. The tips from the world's "top" players were things like "always be the iron, players may not see your piece and thus forget to charge you rent". What an utter load of shit. Monopoly is one of the worst games ever invented and certainly the worst to have gained significant popularity.

I like cats fine, and that's someone's pet and all, but the outrage over that story is ludicrous. There's plenty more deserving targets of people's venom. Why don't The Sun out some yobs who are making residents lives a misery, that kind of thing?

Yup. It is despicable what she did, no two ways about it. However, I'm really tickled by the irony that she was outed on Facebook to a huge outcry, and yet Raoul Moat got >80,000 followers. There's nowt as queer as folk.

That thing totally kicked off. I posted it on my wall (via VICE magazine, somewhat ironically) and about 20 of my friends, half of which I don't speak to much, and most of which are caricatures right out of the video anyway, reposted it before the day was out. Seems to have struck a chord in the cool scene for sure. I chuckled.

One girl on my list was a touch offended, properly felt like she was having fun poked at her. "98% of my friends are dickheads then."
She still ended up posting it on her wall though, as some kind of self-assurance dickhead validation power play thing.

Expect some of you have bumped into this already, but:

Google Beatbox
  1. Go to Google Translate
  2. Set the translator to translate from German to German
  3. Copy and paste: pv zk pv pv zk pv zk kz zk pv pv pv zk pv zk zk pzk pzk pvzkpkzvpvzk kkkkkk bsch
  4. Listen
  5. Create your own - who can do the best?!
I just knocked up some nice drums here: pwk bsch ds bsch bsch ds pvk pvk tsch ds

Apparently:
zk = suspended cymbal
bschk = snare
pv = brush
bk = bass
tk = flam1
vk = roll tap
kt = flam2
kttp = flam tap
krp = hi hat tap
pv = short roll
th = hi hat

...but as you can see from the one I freestyled you can just use your own. Have fun!

I thought you'd like that video, Ryan ;) (I expected you to be the first to comment). Also, I think someone got a little carried away with that comment you've quoted, Charlie! Anyway, I thought it was a fun video and those of you who enjoy popular music doubtless recognise the tune that is being covered.
