The last Andy Bruno episode for now.

Countdown recap for Monday 29 November 1982.

"The quiz game that some people are saying is to entertainment what Dracula was to the blood transfusion service" is how Richard opens the show. Not sure about that one.

C1: Challenger Josef Kollar. A 37-year-old registered chartered accountant from Southampton, professional chess player and future Goggleboxer, as well as today's toss winner, so is C1. He wanted to be a train driver when he was younger, but still retains an interest in traction engines.
C2: Champion Andrew Bruno (1 win, 40 points). A sales executive from Manchester.
DC: Mary and Kenneth Williams.
LB: Dr Linda Barrett.
OT: Other words or solutions. Again, no COD7 at present.

Enjoy the show.

Round 1: R H E Z G I X R O

Josef: gorge
Andrew: HIRE (4)
DC: ZERO (4)
OT: GORIER (6)
Score: 0–4 (max 6)

Turns out Joe has an annoying habit of saying "continent" for consonant. Joe makes a bad start by seeing a phantom G.

Round 2: U H L I E T G Y S

Josef: LIGHTS (6)
Andrew: GUILTY (6)
OT: GLUIEST (7) GUSHILY (7) GUSTILY (7) GUTSILY (7) SIGHTLY (7) SLEIGHT (7) UGLIEST (7)
Score: 6–10 (max 13)

Andrew, who asks for letters more than one at a time, gets comments from Richard as to how fast he picks the letters. Kenneth misses all the 7s and instead leads into a rant about the corruption of "guilty", "brighthelmstone", and "god be with you" into "admission of wrongdoing", "Brighton", and "goodbye" instead.

Round 3: M D A P F I E S L

Josef: FIELDS (6)
Andrew: SAMPLED (7)
DC: FLIES (5)
OT: IMPLEADS (8)
Score: 6–17 (max 21)

For once, Richard is actually bothering to ask the loser what they've got as a matter of interest. Kenneth's FLIES comes from acting more than anything else, but even he admits "nowhere near as good" as Andrew.

Round 4: 25, 8, 4, 1, 7, 6. Target: 902.

Josef: 843.
Andrew: 901. 4 × 25 × (8 + 1) + 7 − 6 (7)
LB: 901. (7)
OT: 902. (25 + 8 − 1) × 7 × 4 + 6 (10)
Score: 6–24 (max 31)

Linda somehow misses this fairly easy numbers game (#CarolWouldHaveGotThat) though not as badly as Joe, who is 59 out despite doing accountancy for a living, a fact not lost on Richard.

Kenneth goes into a story about the misuse of plurals, such as "the government aren't doing enough" when it should be "isn't". "There is pansies, but you must remember she wasn't herself at the time" is the punchline, which Richard finds funnier than the rest of the studio combined.

Richard describes Countdown as having "really upset the ratings, and the petty officers aren't too pleased either". I don't get it either.

Round 5: S C B A I E T D N

Josef: BASTED (6)
Andrew: BASTED (6)
DC: CABINETS (8)
OT: BANDIEST (8) DISTANCE (8)
Score: 12–30 (max 39)

BASTED in the sense of a Sunday joint, apparently, though I have to confess it's not a word I'm familiar with. Kenneth with a rare max here, and talks about all the different types of CABINETS one could get, ending with cabinet puddings and a "little dissertation" (Whiteley, 1982) on Dickens.

Richard reminds people of the bonus for 9-letter words (which back then was only a 1 point bonus!) but also comments no one has yet declared a nine on Countdown yet.

Round 6: U E N F N O D M A

Josef: FANNED (6)
Andrew: MUNDANE (7)
DC: FONDUE (6)
OT: UNNAMED (7)
Score: 12–37 (max 46)

Excellent spot from Andrew. "Nothing MUNDANE about that", comments Richard.

Round 7: E O B T D E U J P

Josef: DOUBT (5)
Andrew: DEBUT (5)
OT: DEPUTE (6) POUTED (6) TOUPEE (6)
Score: 17–42 (max 52)

Kenneth gets so engrossed in DEBUT and the incorrect Anglicising of words (cul-de-sac, garage) and Franco-cising of words (valet) that Richard almost forgets to ask Joe for his word.

Round 8: 25, 4, 10, 4, 6, 2. Target: 470.

Josef: 462. (10 + 4 + 4) × 25 + 6 × 2 (5)
Andrew: 462. 4 × 25 × 4 + 6 × 10 + 2 (5)
OT: 470. (25 + 4 × 4 + 6) × 10 (10)
Score: 22–47 (max 62)

Richard forgets to ask Linda if anything was better. But I have to say given she missed the first one I suspect she wouldn't have got it here either. The trick here is to do 47 x 10.

Round 9: A N O O G K R A S

Andrew buzzes on 4 seconds to say KANGAROOS which is correct.
Score: 22–57 (max 72)

"We thought that one would really jump out at you," says Richard. Joe says he was nowhere near.

Another plural conundrum, interestingly.

Richard has a complaint from a Mr Lee Fu Young, a Chinese restauranteur from Soho, who complains of a mistake in a numbers round, as the vital statistician added 25 + 18 = 43 in one of last week's programmes. But Mr Young comments that adding 25 and 18 gives you a Chicken Chop Suei and Sweet and Sour King Prawns. As a result, he is now calling his new restaurant the Peking Minus. (And just in case Richard hadn't killed the joke already, he points out it's a Chinese takeaway. You don't say...)

Edited against Jack Worsley's COD8, but still not COD7.

Rating and Petty Officer are naval ranks.

Ahead of his time, many years before co-events started doing this. I almost expected him to ask for a CV7.

Yeah he was certainly entertaining - and a clever chap too
