Thursday 5th September 2013 (Series 69, Prelim 42)

Post by James Robinson »

The advantages of being in the audience for an episode of Countdown is that you have ages to prepare what you might say in your recap, only then for the editors to ruin it, by cutting out some interesting and funny bits from the final cut. :x

Luckily, that isn't the case this time, so it's time to follow on from yesterday's starter and move onto the main course of the Robinson Triple feast. :P Enjoy. ;) :) :D

Countdown recap for Thursday 5 September 2013.

C1: Champion Jen Steadman (4 wins, 464 points.) An Apteforumite from Paddock Wood, Kent. She is an English graduate from the University of Exeter.
C2: Challenger Ray Tate. A retired licensed betting manager from Glasgow. In the early 1980's, a man bet £10 and came out with winnings of £186,000 :!: :!:   :o :o He has already met Rachel at the Mind Sports Festival in Prague earlier this year. 8-) :geek: :ugeek: He is also a returner, having previously appeared in Series 34, losing to the legend that is James Martin, by a score of 59-55. 8-)
DC: Susie Dent and Connie Fisher.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Round 1: N R M I A E B O H

C1: BOHEMIAN (8)
C2: BROMINE (7)
DC: HAMBONE (7) MORAINE (7)
OT: HORNBEAM (8)
Score: 8–0 (max 8)

Sitting next to Eddie, he was so nervous, along with Jen, at the prospect of playing a good Scrabbler, and even thought that Ray would get the 8 in this round, but, no he doesn't, it's Jen who gets off to the perfect start with a magnificent 8. 8-)

A HORNBEAM is any North American shrub or tree belonging to the genus Carpinus, of the birch family, yielding a hard, heavy wood, as Carpinus caroliniana.

Round 2: E I U A V N M W S

C1: WAIVES (6)
C2: mauvines
DC: VIEWS (5) VINES (5) MINES (5)
OT: AMINES (6) ANIMUS (6) INSEAM (6) MAUVES (6) MAVENS (6) NAEVUS (6) NAVIES (6) UNWISE (6)
Score: 14–0 (max 14)

Ray gives a confident sounding 8, which shocks just about everyone inside the studio, especially as Jen sticks to 6, but unfortunately for Ray, the curse of the Scrabbler strikes, and Ray finds himself further adrift. Hopefully he won't pass out like he did last year during a 24 hour Scrabble challenge............ :P

An AMINE is any of a class of compounds derived from ammonia by replacement of one or more hydrogen atoms with organic groups.
ANIMUS is strong dislike or enmity.

Round 3: 75, 5, 4, 1, 10, 5. Target: 106.

C1: 106. (5 x 5) + 75 + 10 - 4 (10)
C2: 106. (10 x 4) + 75 - (5 + 5) + 1 (10)
Score: 24–10 (max 24)

Definitely not as simple as it seemed like it should be, but both our contestants get there................. in the end. :P

Teatime teaser: FILLSUPA -> PAILFULS

Round 4: E O I A E T P T D

C1: OPIATED (7)
C2: EPIDOTE (7)
DC: TIPTOED (7) ADOPTEE (7)
Score: 31–17 (max 31)

I'm sure that Ray is glad that EPIDOTE is in the OED3, as he is still within touching distance of Jen, which I'm sure all us men would like to be too. ;) :) :D

Round 5: G J P O A E S L O

C1: POOLS (5)
C2: gloops
DC: GLOOP (5) GOSPEL (6)
OT: ASLOPE (6) GALOPS (6) JALEOS (6) PLAGES (6) POGOES (6) POLJES (6) POOJAS (6)
Score: 36–17 (max 37)

Me and Eddie were in complete shock when Jen only got 5 and Ray got 6, but within seconds, agony and disbelief, turned into relief and joy, as luckily GLOOP can't be pluralised, so Jen's partially shutdown isn't fatal. :)

A GALOP (or GALLOPADE) is a lively round dance in duple time.
In Hinduism, a POOJA is a form of ceremonial worship.

Round 6: 100, 9, 2, 1, 7, 3. Target: 743.

C1: 743. (((3 x 2) + 100) x 7) + 1 (10)
C2: 753.
Score: 46–17 (max 47)

As with most Scrabblers who seem to come on here, numbers is clearly a big weakness of Ray's, with him being TEN away, with Jen spot on, and now in total control, despite that little wobble in the last round.

Connie talks about how she met her husband for the first time and how she tried to work out how much of an age gap there was between, and they bumped heads while trying to have their first kiss (because they were in a taxi going over a speed bump :!: :!:   )

Round 7: K R D A U I E N L

C1: LAUNDER (7)
C2: DIURNAL (7)
DC: UNALIKE (7) LANKIER (7)
OT: KINDLER (7) KNAIDEL (7) KNURLED (7) LURDANE (7) RANKLED (7) UNAIRED (7) UNIDEAL (7)
Score: 53–24 (max 54)

It's 7's aplenty in this round, with 7's everywhere you look. ;) :) :D

KNURLED is an adjective meaning having small ridges on the edge or surface.

Round 8: O U I A S R F S E

C1: AROUSES (7)
C2: SERIOUS (7)
DC: SURFS (5) SOURS (5) FISSURE (7)
OT: FRAISES (7) FUSSIER (7) SAURIES (7) SURFIES (7)
Score: 60–31 (max 61)

Seven 7's here, including an appearance from Connie FISSURE. :P

A FRAISE is a defence consisting of pointed stakes projecting from the ramparts in a horizontal or an inclined position.
A SAURY (plural SAURIES) is a sharp-snouted fish, Scomberesox saurus, inhabiting temperate regions of the Atlantic Ocean.

Round 9: 75, 5, 10, 9, 4, 8. Target: 763.

C1: 763. (75 x 10) + 9 + 4 (10)
C2: 763. (75 x 10) + 8 + 5 (10)
Score: 70–41 (max 71)

Easy numbers for all concerned here. NEXT

Teatime teaser: DOGSRUMP -> GUMDROPS

Round 10: O E I A L P S M C

C1: COMPLIES (8)
C2: CAMISOLE (8)
DC: COMPILES (8) MISPLACE (8) SPECIAL (7)
OT: POLEMICS (8)
Score: 78–49 (max 79)

Eights apiece here. Jen is definitely having a stern test put to her by Ray today, but she has coped superbly well.

POLEMICS is the art or practice of disputation or controversy.

Round 11: R L Y O E E G R G

C1: LOGGER (6)
C2: GORGER (6)
DC: LEERY (5)
OT: REGORGE (7)
Score: 84–55 (max 86)

Well, that's the 2nd point that Jen has let go today, but hey-ho, we don't care about that now, because Ray is running out of rounds to make up more ground on Jen.

Susie's Origins Of Words talks about the origins of "cancel" and "expunge".

Round 12: O U E I S D Z N D

C1: UNSIZED (7)
C2: UNSIZED (7)
DC: DOZENS (6) NODDIES (7)
OT: SOUNDED (7)
Score: 91–62 (max 93)

Both our contestants seem to be UNSIZED in this one, which gets them another 7 points each. :)

Round 13: R H D O O E T B O

C1: BOOTED (6)
C2: boothed
DC: HOOTED (6)
OT: THEORBO (7)
Score: 97–62 (max 100)

Ray decides to take desperate measures to try and claw back some ground, but instead, his (and Connie's) guess at a 7 is put down by Susie, which gives Jen her 5th win. 8-)

A THEORBO is an obsolete bass lute with two sets of strings attached to separate peg boxes, one above the other, on the neck.

Round 14: 50, 2, 6, 5, 1, 5. Target: 637.

C1: 637. (50 - 1) x (6 + 5 + 2) (10)
C2: 636.
Score: 107–62 (max 110)

And it's perfection on the numbers for Jen, as she now gets her 5th century on the spin too. :D Now for the conundrum................ ;) :) :D

Round 15: A F I T G I R L Y

C1 buzzes on 5.75 seconds to say FRAGILITY which is correct.
Final Score: 117–62 (max 120)

Well, it's a smidge slower than recent days, but it's a confident conundrum solve form the FIT GIRLY, and Jen has now reached 5 wins with 581 points, which is pretty good going, and by keeping this run going, she could break plenty of female records, especially if she becomes an octochamp on Tuesday. ;) :) :D  :geek: :ugeek: 8-)

But, before that, she has to win on Friday and Monday, but based on her recent form of a 14 maxer, then a 13 maxer, then a 12 maxer, you'd find it hard to find a reason to suggest that she won't win tomorrow and then go on for the big stuff later on. ;) :) :D  8-)

With AP in the US, it's me in the recappers' chair again tomorrow, and hopefully it'll be on a bit earlier than tonight's delayed posting. 8-)

So, till tomorrow, bye bye for now. 8-) 8-) 8-)

I am suprised Bohemian was allowed in R01 - surely it should always be capitalised?

At the bottom of what?

Surely it is a very simple definition i.e a person from Bohemia or someone who has a Bohemian lifestyle

It wasn't deliberate ignorance, Michael, but I didn't realise that I missed the link that I thought I added on there.

Here's the link: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/bohemian

And it clearly says on definitions 2 and 6 that it's good in lower case, which is good for us. :D
