Friday 16th August 2013 (8/10 Cats Series 1, Episode 4)

Post by Giles »

James is usually the master of the recaps of these specials, but I thought I'd give one a go!

8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown recap for Friday 16th August 2013.

Team 1:
Sarah Millican, and Jimmy says in her hometown, Newcastle, no-one actually does anything for the whole time (whether Countdown is on or off)
&
Sean Lock, who is apparently anger in human form, and a master of the Egyptian Countdown with all those hieroglyphs (who has mascot which is the "lucky" dead cat of the Robinsons :o )

Team 2:
Jon Richardson, who *does* have a girlfriend (with his mascot, which is an American Stetson, that changes him into the persona of the "Countdown Kid")
&
Chris Ramsey, who wants to work in a zoo and spends a lot of his time making his hair straight.

DC: Susie Dent, and she has a favourite word - "retromingency" which is, to the panel's delight, peeing backwards (which "rhinos and hares" can do) and Abandoman (Robert Broderick and James Hancox)
RR: Rachel Riley, who calms the contestants by saying a contestant once scored 3 points for a 3-letter word
OT: Other words or solutions

R01: U I O C N T L R E
R02: 75, 100, 50, 25, 2, 8. Target: 441.

TTT: TOOLFLAB - "A lot of men are familiar with this"
R05: O A E W S V I L J

And now a brief interlude before our main feature:

Round 0.5 (Picked by Sarah & Sean): U I O C N T

Rachel smirks at the audience and Jimmy over-excitedly starts the clock. It stops after about 12 seconds and we see the hand go round to the other side and back to the top.

Everyone's mind: C**T

(Ok, time to start proper)

Round 1 (Picked by Sarah & Sean): U I O C N T L R E
Jimmy's Distraction: Getting massaged by a young, good-looking woman.

Team 1 - Sarah: RECOUNT (7) / Sean: COUNTER (7)
Team 2 - Jon: COUNTER/RECOUNT (7) / Chris: LITRE (5)
OT: NEUROTIC (8) OUTLINER (8)
Score: 7–7 (max 8)

After a very interesting and amusing start, there seems to be a lot of counting going on here. And Chris gets massaged by an old man.

Round 2 (Picked by Chris & Jon): 75, 100, 25, 50, 2, 8. Target: 441.

Team 1 - Sarah: 450. / Sean: 450.
Team 2 - Jon: 440. (75 / 25 + 2 + 50) x 8 (7) / Chris: 450.
RR: 441. (50 + 2) x 8 + 25
Score: 7–14 (max 18)

Chris unexpectedly takes a bold move and chooses 4L, to the delight of those apterites who devoutly follow its teachings and rules. 3/4 of the contestants get 450, but Jon spots a nifty way and gets 1 away.

A humorous, improvised rap is performed with the favourite words of the panel. Robert struggles with the meaning of Sean's "salopette", which interestingly isn't in the English dictionary yet. And he manages to encompass "antidisestablishmentarianism" into the rap.

Teatime teaser: SEANSBUM -> SUNBEAMS

Just Sean & Jon take on round 3 now.

Round 3 (Picked by Jon): N A K D E I G P E
Jimmy's Distraction: Jimmy plays Connect Four with Rachel. It's a fast-paced game, but soon enough Jimmy puts two in, Rachel exclaims "Oi, cheating!", but then promptly gets four in a row. Rachel then trips up on part of the set (which was causing Jay trouble even when I was recording!).

Sean: GAINED (6)
Jon: PEEKING (7)
OT: KEEPING (7) PEAKING (7)
Score: 7–21 (max 25)

Rachel goes along with what the "Kid" wants. There is jubilation when NAKDE come up. The "Kid" may be morphing into Mr T.

Now, Sarah & Chris take on the numbers.

Round 4 (Picked by Sarah): 75, 25, 2, 1, 4, 6. Target: 319.

Sarah: 318. (75 + 25 + 6) x (4 - 1) (7)
Chris: 325.
RR: 319. 75 x 4 + 25 - 6 (10)
Score: 14-21 (max 35)

Teatime teaser: TOOLFLAB -> FOOTBALL

Time for Joe Wilkinson to come on. He is dressed, surprisingly, in a wedding dress and he says it was because Rachel texted him "Will you marry me?" but he had actually misread it! And he said that Rachel asked him to push a fox shit through Carol Vorderman's letterbox!

Round 5 (Picked by Sarah & Sean): O A E W S V I L J

Team 1 - Sarah: LOAVES (6) / Sean: SWIVEL (6)
Team 2 - Jon: VOWELS (6) / Chris: AS (2!)
DC: OLIVES (6) WAIVES (6)
OT: JALEOS (6) JOVIAL (6) VALISE (6) VIOLAS (6) WOLVES (6)
Score: 20-27 (max 41)

Joe is rather annoyed during the selection of the letters. Chris has a very wobbly (number) 2. Jon's 6 is very apt.

Round 6 (Picked by Jon & Chris): 50, 6, 7, 1, 1, 6. Target: 311.

Team 1 - Sarah: 312. / Sean: 311. 6 x 50 + 7 + 6 - 1 - 1 (10)
Team 2 - Jon: 311. (50 + 1) x 6 + 6 - 1 (10) / Chris: 311. x
Score: 30-37 (max 51)

Chris got the two 1s, added them together, then he used another 1 to make a 3. Then he used the two 1s again to make a 3 and then make 311. Sean and Jon get this exactly.

Abandoman improvise another rap with some special objects from the team. They include an owl, a cherry, a penguin, fake poo, a prosthetic leg, and some cards and a Hawaiian dancing doll (that genuinely looks like Jimmy Carr).

Teatime teaser: ITUGJONS -> JOUSTING

Round 7 (Picked by Jon & Chris): A O I I A C S D P
Jimmy's Distraction: Jimmy gets on with some knitting and makes a very long yellow scarf.

Team 1 - Sarah: COP (3) / Sean: CADS (4)
Team 2 - Jon: DISCO (5) / Chris: ACID (4)
OT: CAPIAS (6) CAPSID (6) POSADA (6) PSOCID (6) SPODIC (6)
Score: 30-42 (max 57)

Chris gets vowel-syndrome and angers Sean. Both Sarah and Chris forget to pluralise their offerings, and Jon actually goes and writes an S next to Chris' ACID. However, he gets DISCO to steal the show!

Round 8 (Picked by Sarah & Sean): 100, 7, 4, 10, 1, 3. Target: 991.

Team 1 - Sarah: 991. 10 x 100 - (7 + 3 - 1) (10) / Sean: 7.
Team 2 - Jon: 991. (100 - 1) x 10 + (4 - 3) (10) / Chris: 991. x
Score: 40-52 (max 67)

Sean gets 7, needing no steps at all. Chris is shaking but alas, he has it wrong.

No tense crucial conundrum here, this time.

Round 9: G R O P E Y H A G

C2 buzzes on 15 seconds to say GEOGRAPHY which is correct.
Final Score: 40–62 (max 77)

Jon proves his worth and wins a teapot for another time!

I think that's the end of this mini-series now, and I don't know whether it will be renewed for second. I hope so!

Ciao.
