Tom Carey – forgetting recap duty since 2012

C1: Giles ‘The Farnham Firestorm’ Hutchings (10 wins, 1180 points). ‘Highest scoring octochamp ever’, according to Nick. Depends how you convert the scores.

Round 1: HSLSEITEA
C1: SHALIEST (8)
C2: EASIEST (7)
OT: SHEITELS, SHELTIES (both 8)
Score: 8 – 0 (max 8 )

TEASELS can also be purple-headed spiny plants, according to DC. Giles makes a start which gets him to 8-0.

Round 2: DRRGOEOIZ
C1: GORIER (6)
C2: odorizer (n.a.w.)
OT: ODORIZE (7)
Score: 14 – 0 (max 15 )

Unlucky mistake for Andy, this just shows how important the order of letter declarations are.

Round 3: 25 5 6 9 2 3 → 971
C1: 972; (9 × 5 − 6) × 25 – 3 (7)
C2: 972; (5 × 6 + 9) × 25 – 3 (7)
Score: 21 – 7 (max 22 )

Giles picks 1L but it’s still impossible. They both max it though, and Andy now has points.

TTT: BIPOLARS → PARBOILS

'Dad half-cooks the potatoes, perhaps?'

Round 4: BNDAUOEME
C1: ABOUND (6)
C2: BEMOANED (8)
Score: 21 – 15 (max 30 )

Darren for Andy gets him back into the game, just 6 behind despite scoring nothing the first 2 rounds.

Round 5: PFNAOSRIO
C1: SOPRANO (7)
C2: PARISON (7)
OT: INSOFAR, PRONAOI, PRONAOS (all 7)
Score: 28 – 22 (max 37 )

Everyone wanted an E here for PINAFORES, but life ain’t fair.

Round 6: 75 50 25 100 9 2 → 683
C1: 683; 75 × 9 + 100 ÷ 25 × 2 (10)
C2: 683; 75 × 9 + 100 ÷ 25 × 2 (10)
Score: 38 – 32 (max 47 )

4 large from Andy, obviously, but it’s too easy to be missed by Giles, or anyone for that matter. Myleene talks about her childhood.

Round 7: MYNPEIVPA
C1: PIEMAN (6)
C2: PIEMAN (6)
OT: PAYNIM (6)
Score: 44 – 38 (max 53 )

A PAYNIM is a non-Christian. Kinda like the opposite of GIAOUR.

Round 8: MTCOEOTEN
C1: COTTON (6)
C2: COTTON (6)
DC: MOTET (5)
OT: ECOTONE (7)
Score: 50 – 44 (max 60 )

Round 9: 100 4 8 6 5 7 → 729
C1: 729; (100 + 4) × 7 + 6 – 5 (10)
C2: 729; (100 + 5) × 7 − 6 (10)
Score: 60 – 54 (max 70 )

Standard.

TTT: KENMANIC → NICKNAME

'Manic Ken isn't really what he's called, it's a moniker.' Makes you wonder why the teaser wasn't MANICKEN.

Round 10: QSGAEOIRS
C1: ARGOSIES (8)
C2: GASSIER (7)
Score: 68 – 54 (max 78 )

Crazy Giles word #2, meaning a large merchant ship.

Round 11: JHRRIAEXU
C1: HEIAU (5)
C2: HAIR (4)
OT: AIRER, AUREI, HIJRA, HIRER, URAEI (all 5)
Score: 73 – 54 (max 83 )

‘I think it’s a Hawaiian hut, or something?’ Actually some sort of Hawaiian temple.

Round 12: MLGOAENWN
C1: MANGONEL (8)
C2: MANGONEL (8)
Score: 81 – 62 (max 91 )

Susie talks about hectic fever and TB. This isn’t where Origins of Words is. Oh well.

Round 13: DTSDOIAHE
C1: IODATES (7)
C2: IODATES (7)
DC: HOISTED (7)
OT: TOADIED, TOADIES, TOADISH, TODDIES (all 7)
Score: 88 – 69 (max 98 )

19 b-hind going into final numbers is Andy...

Round 14: 25 75 100 50 7 9 → 967
C1: 968 100 × 9 + 75 − 7 (7)
C2: 968 100 × 9 + 75 − 7 (7)
Score: 95 – 76 (max 105 )

‘Game over ‘cause I can’t get it... 968 not written down’
Actually impossible, unlucky there Andy.

Conundrum: INNITEPIC

Andy buzzes on around 1.5 seconds with INCIPIENT.

95-86 (max 115) to Giles.

GG.

At the end, Giles wins all his stuff. No mention of a prize for Andy, have they scrapped that £1000?

Awesome series, even if it was shorter than usual.

Apologies if the formatting of this recap looks crap, I was testing something and it arsed it all up.

Score: 95-86
Raw: 102-104 (AP victory)
Maxes: 11-10
Stepdown: 128-109
Raw Stepdown: 136-136

He won a laptop (Dell Inspiron I think). They did mention it and show it.
Mike Brown: "Round 12: T N R S A E I G U

C1: SIGNATURE (18) ["9; not written down"]
C2: SEATING (7)
Score: 108–16 (max 113)

Another niner for Adam and yet another century. Well done, that man."

If you check the spoiler thread you'll see that HEJIRA is valid (well, 99.9% valid anyway).

Great final but I think Giles had an off day, despite winning
