Countdown Marathon - Thursday 28 February/Friday 1 March '13

Post by James Robinson »

APOLOGIES IN ADVANCED FOR THE PROLONGED WAIT, BUT A PROMISE IS A PROMISE :!: ;) :) :D

People have done many daring feats over the years to raise money for Comic Relief.

We've had celebrities climb up Mount Kilimanjaro, we've had celebrities walk in a barren, arid desert for ages, we've had celebrities go white-water rafting down the Zambezi, we've had David Walliams swin the Channel, the Strait of Gibraltar and the length of the Thames, we've had Helen Skelton kayak down the Amazon, walk on a tightrope on top of Battersea Power Station, walk down to the South Pole (yes, I realise some of those were for the other fundraisers, but you get the idea. :P )

But, now we have something super amazing that will top them all. As this year is the 25th anniversary of the first Comic Relief telethon, the comedian Mark Watson decided to do a 25 hour long comedy gig at the Pleasance Theatre in Islington, while next door in a small room, 2 legends of Countdown decide that they will go and emulate that by doing a 25 HOUR GAME OF COUNTDOWN!!!!! :o ;) :) :D  8-) :geek: :ugeek:

But, prepare yourselves as Mark Deeks and Innis Carson take on letters, exhaustion, numbers, Zarte, targets, Eddie Mair, conundrums, Rachel Riley and complete drowsiness all to raise money for Comic Relief. 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-)

So, here is a once-in-a-lifetime, 450 round recap. Enjoy. ;) :) :D  8-)

(NOTE: Because of restraints to the amount of digits that can be put into one post, this will have to be spread out over 5 posts.)

So, the first post has all the rounds, followed by a detail of the first hour. 8-)

The numbers game is super straightforward, just as we hoped.

BUT NOW, AMAZINGLY, AND I'M NOT REALLY SURE IF WE THOUGHT IT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN, BUT WITH THE GAP AT JUST 2 POINTS, WE HAVE OURSELVES A CRUCIAL CONUNDRUM.

So, it was back to the theatre with Mark Watson and his other guests, and after being informed of the scores, and with the audience in complete suspense, Rachel sorted out the conundrum (supplied by Damian) on her Countdown board that she brought down with her for the most crucial conundrum that there has ever been!!! ;) :) :D 8-)

And with the piano buzzers (yes, they used other ends of a piano as buzzers!!), the stage was set!!!

So, after 359 letters games, 90 numbers rounds and 1 conundrum, we have our champion, the brilliant Innis Carson.

But, as we all know, the result was insignificant, compared to the fact that they were a) playing for pretty much 25 hours straight, and b) raised nearly £3,000 for Comic Relief.

But, from a statistical point of view, this is just UN-BELIEV-ABLE!!!!! The fact that these guys maxed about 80% of the rounds each, and the quality of words and numbers solving that has been done during the whole 25 hours is of an exceptionally high standard, and both Mark and Innis have done Apterous proud too.

Maybe if we have something similar in 2 years time for the 27th anniversary, maybe we should get another 2 players to do 27 hours of Countdown, as it's fair to say that this has proved to be a fantastic idea, and I think it definitely needs to be repeated in the future.

So, I hope that this has been a fitting enough tribute to our 2 goliaths, and I'll see you all soon for another recap. ;) :) :D  8-)

So, till then, keep on donating, and see you around. :geek: :ugeek:

FWIW, I didn't really guess SIDEBOOB in that round. I declared first and only have 7 (BOOBIES), then AFTER innis outscored me I asked him to put my declaration is as that.

Great effort, James!

Reading back those last rounds gave me a nice warm feeling. They were pretty amped. I hope Innis won't mind me mentioning that he was as into is as I've ever seen him into anything - the surrealness of the whole thing (especially with Rachel dealing), the closeness of the score, the intensity. And after having mostly matched each other for 24 hours, to trade blows in those last few with some quality spots (Especially from Innis: REOVIRUS!) at such a late stage in such a strange scenario when we were simultaneously trying our hardest and rushing through it a bit was pretty unforgettable. Ahhh, memories. To be honest, I can remember each round, and so many have a story of their own. Hope I don't forget them.

Kudos to James, who must have spent at least 25 hours making that recap himself.

The raw scores were IDENTICAL :!:
I'm not dead yet. In a rut right now because of stress from work. I'll be back later in S89. I also plan to bring back the Mastergram - if I can find a way to run a timer or clock through pure MediaWiki without having to upload to Vimeo every time.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading through this, especially as I couldn't follow it all while it was happening. Mega kudos to all involved.

I feel a bit mean saying this now, especially in my first post here... In the proposed solution for round 365, you should add the 1 on at the end, not subtract it. Sorry!
