Round 1: D Q P A O E N T L

C1: PLANTED (7)
C2: PLANTED (7)
DC: TADPOLE (7)
OT: NOTEPAD (7) POLENTA (7) TALONED (7) TONEPAD (7)
Score: 7–7 (max 7)

Nice flat start to today's show. :)

Round 2: S H D O U G F A I

C1: OAFISH (6)
C2: DOUGH (5)
DC: DOUGHS (6) DOGFISH (7)
Score: 13–7 (max 14)

Adam seems to feeling a bit OAFISH. Well, if it gets him the lead, it clearly works. :P

Round 3: C L G S O E I U T

C1: CLOUTS (6)
C2: UGLIEST (7)
DC: GLUCOSE (7)
Me: EULOGIST (8) :D
Score: 13–14 (max 22)

But not for long, as Tia gets the UGLIEST 7 imaginable to take the smallest lead possible, while I get the longest word available. 8-)

Round 4: R L R E A I T Z B

C1: TRAILER (7)
C2: TRAILER (7)
DC: RETRIAL (7)
OT: ARBITER (7) BIZARRE (7) BRAZIER (7) LIBRATE (7) RAREBIT (7) RETIRAL (7) TABLIER (7) TRIABLE (7)
Score: 20–21 (max 29)

Loadsa loadsa 7's, but our contestants seem content with a TRAILER.........

Round 5: 50, 100, 10, 1, 7, 7. Target: 339.

C1: 339. (50 x 7) - 10 - 1 (10)
C2: 339. (50 x 7) - 10 - 1 (10)
Score: 30–31 (max 39)

After the first one yesterday, was so, so, dire, it's nice to see an easy numbers game to start with today. :)

Sir Ranulph (or Ran, as Nick likes to call him) talks about his time on Top Dogs, where he worked with past DC guest John Simpson and the sailor, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, where they each learned about the jobs of the other two. So, Ranulph and Robin did foreign reporting in Afghanistan, Ranulph and John did sailing round Cape Horn, and Ranulph taught John and Robin polar exploration in Baffin Bay, Canada. 8-)

Teatime teaser: AMBEREMU -> BUMMAREE

Round 6: R M J O I S W U O

C1: ROOMS (5)
C2: WORMS (5)
DC: MOORS (5)
OT: JORUMS (6)
Score: 35–36 (max 45)

Hmmm, some WORMS in ROOMS on the MOORS. Can't imagine anything worse than that from this bunch. Impressive darren though. :geek:

A JORUM is a large bowl or container for holding drink.

Round 7: T G R A E I H D E

C1: EARTHED (7)
C2: HERITAGE (8)
DC: RIGHTED (7) GATHERED (8)
OT: GAITERED (8)
Score: 35–44 (max 53)

A very impressive 8 by Tia, increasing her overall advantage to 9. 8-)

Round 8: N X B O A N S E V

C1: BONES (5)
C2: BOXES (5)
DC: BANNS (5) NOVENAS (7)
OT: NANOBES (7)
Score: 40–49 (max 60)

Just the two 7's in this one. One fairly familiar to veteran Countdowners :geek: , and one fairly familiar to veteran Apterites. :ugeek:

Round 9: L K L C I A U T E

C1: CAULK (5)
C2: TACKLE (6)
DC: ACUTE (5)
OT: CATLIKE (7)
Score: 40–55 (max 67)

Tia is clearly TACKLE-ing this game very well. She now has a lead of 15 points, as we head to her first numbers game.

Susie's Origins Of Words talks about the origins of "tweezers".

Round 10: 100, 3, 4, 5, 2, 5. Target: 256.

C1: 255.
C2: 256. ((100 / 2) x 5) + 4 - 3 + 5 (10)
Score: 40–65 (max 77)

She didn't seem fully confident, but Tia has shown that's she no bottler, and now has a quarter-ton lead. :D

Teatime teaser: TOYPLACE -> CALOTYPE

Round 11: P R T A U A O S D

C1: ROAST (5)
C2: SPROUT (6)
DC: ADAPTORS (8)
Score: 40–71 (max 85)

Tia continues to SPROUT in this game, as DC get the darren. Adam's time is surely up now...............

Round 12: M T P E A E S R U

C1: STEAMER (7)
C2: TAMPERS (7)
DC: MEASURE (7) AMPUTEES (8)
OT: PERMUTES (8) TEMPURAS (8) UPSTREAM (8)
Score: 47–78 (max 93)

Appropriately for Sir Ran, AMPUTEES is spotted by DC and Tia is closing in on being the first woman to win a game since early August (excluding specials). :o

Round 13: T H D I A I S D E

C1: HASTE (5)
C2: SHADED (6)
DC: ASIDE (5) DEATHS (6)
OT: ADDIES (6) DASHED (6) DISHED (6) HASTED (6) SAITHE (6) SIDDHA (6) SIDDHI (6) TIDIED (6) TIDIES (6)
Score: 47–84 (max 99)

Loads of 6's here, but Adam can't find one, which means that Tia has got the win and a possible chance of making a century. 8-)

A SAITHE is another name for a pollock, the fish.
In Indian religion, a SIDDHA is "one who has attained perfection and bliss".
In yoga, the SIDDHI is a miraculous power imparted by the late stages of intense meditation.

Round 14: 25, 100, 10, 9, 7, 7. Target: 399.

C1: 400. (9 + 7) x 25 (7)
C2: 400. (9 + 7) x 25 (7)
RR: 399. ((7 + 7 + 25) x 10) + 9 (10)
Score: 54–91 (max 109)

400 is pretty straightforward, but using a bit of mathematical know-how, 399 is there. Now, can Tia wrap up an impressive debut by solving the conundrum......... :?:

Round 15: R O A D V E N U E

C1 buzzes on 17.75 seconds to say ENDEAVOUR which is correct.
Final Score: 64–91 (max 119)

Unfortunately, it's Adam who has the last word, thanks to his ENDEAVOUR.

But, despite not getting the conundrum, our Transatlantic Apterite has put in a good shift today, and definitely has a good chance of getting a few more wins under her belt. Will she do it, I wonder........... :?

Join me tomorrow to see if she get win #2.

Till then, bye bye. ;) :) :D

Actually, my understanding is that Canadians tend to keep the British U in that sort of thing (cf. here for example).
