Post by James Robinson »

WAHEY! It's good to be back recapping, well recapping the current series anyway. ;) :) :D  8-)

Enjoy the return of the one and only, Robinson Recap. 8-)

Countdown recap for Wednesday 12 January 2011.

C1: Champion Gavin Cooksley (1 win, 80 points.) From Hedge End, Southampton. He is known to be accident prone. He's a big football fan and supports Yeovil Town, because he is originally from Somerset. He also likes horse racing and likes going to meets at Newbury, Ascot and Goodwood.
C2: Challenger Adam Gillard. A 21-year-old Apteforumite originally from Essex, but now lives in Middlesex. He's a student, currently studying for a Masters degree in Speech & Language Cognition. His biggest claim to fame is meeting David Beckham at a family wedding, because he is father's cousin's cousin. He also supports Spurs, and interestingly, Jeff asked if he tried to Becks to sign for his team. (Interesting given recent events. I wonder if Adam really thought that was a possibility at the time.) He also likes playing snooker and his favourite player is Ronnie O'Sullivan.
DC: Susie Dent and Tim Vine.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Enjoy the show, but do remember the solver's word are from the ODE2r, not the new ODE3. Well, not yet anyway.

Round 1: N L E A G F I Y P

C1: LEAPING (7)
C2: FINAGLE (7)
DC: FLAYING (7) FLIP (4)
OT: LEAFING (7) PEALING (7) PLAYING (7) YELPING (7)
Score: 7–7 (max 7)

A nice flat start to begin the 2011 Robinson Recaps.

Round 2: L E D A S O J E G

C1: DOSAGE (6)
C2: SEALED (6)
DC: salad combined (Tim's words that weren't available in the selection. )
OT: DAGOES (6) EAGLED (6) EAGLES (6) ELODEA (6) GAOLED (6) GEODES (6) GLADES (6) JALEOS (6) LEASED (6) LEDGES (6) SLEDGE (6) LODGES (6)
Score: 13–13 (max 13)

Even flatter. Pancakes will be on sale after the recap.

ELODEA are any of several New World submersed aquatic plants of the genus Elodea, having numerous, usually whorled leaves.

Round 3: M R I E F T O C A

C1: FACTOR (6)
C2: COMFIER (7)
DC: MORTICE (7) EROTICA (7)
OT: FOAMIER (7) FORMATE (7)
Score: 13–20 (max 20)

Adam takes the first lead in this game with his COMFIER 7. :)

Round 4: S O R E Q E M A N

C1: MOANERS (7)
C2: RENAMES (7)
DC: SORE (4) OARSMEN (7)
Score: 20–27 (max 27)

All 7's searched and accounted for in round 4. 8-)

Round 5: 25, 6, 7, 10, 1, 8. Target: 847.

C1: -
C2: 849. (((6 x 7) - 8) x 25) - 1 (7)
RR: 847. (((25 - 10) x 8) + 1) x 7 (10)
Score: 20–34 (max 37)

A tricky numbers game, if you don't know your 121 times table that is. Adam gets 2 away, and while he loses his chance of a max game, he doubles his advantage to 14 points.

Tim's anecdotes involve an endless joke that he just can't finish off.

Teatime teaser: EATGREEN -> TEENAGER

Round 6: D O S U W E T S R

C1: DOWSERS (7)
C2: SOUREST (7)
DC: ROUSTED (7)
OT: DETOURS (7) DOUREST (7) DROWSES (7) DUSTERS (7) TRUSSED (7) OESTRUS (7) SOUTERS (7) TORUSES (7) TUSSORE (7) OUTDREW (7) STROWED (7) WORSTED (7)
Score: 27–41 (max 44)

FLAT FLAT FLAT FLAT FLAT FLAT FLAT SEVEN SEVEN SEVEN SEVEN SEVEN SEVEN SEVEN ROUND ROUND ROUND ROUND ROUND ROUND ROUND

OESTRUS is the period of heat or rut; the period of maximum sexual receptivity of the female.
A SOUTER is a Scottish and Northern English term for a person who makes or repairs shoes. Or in other words, a cobbler or shoemaker.
A TUSSORE (or TUSSAH) is a tan silk from India.

Round 7: D R O A P N U S I

C1: PARDONS (7)
C2: PARDONS (7)
DC: DINOSAUR (8)
OT: PADRINOS (8) PONIARDS (8)
Score: 34–48 (max 52)

Hmmm, I actually expected Adam to find one of the 8's here. As it is, both he and Gavin have 7's, and the gap stays at 14.

Round 8: T A G U B E S I T

C1: BUTTIES (7)
C2: BUTTIES (7)
DC: BATTIES (7)
OT: BATISTE (7) BATTUES (7) GUTTIES (7) SITUATE (7)
Score: 41–55 (max 59)

A BATTUE is the undiscriminating slaughter of defenseless or unresisting crowds.

Round 9: X S E I W N O T S

C1: TOWNIES (7)
C2: SNOWIEST (8)
Score: 41–63 (max 67)

The darren is spotted by Adam and his lead extends further and further.

Susie's Origin Of Words tells of the origins of the phrases "sleeping like a log" and "dogsleep".

Round 10: 50, 2, 6, 2, 1, 4. Target: 848.

C1: 850.
C2: 848. (((6 x 2) + 4 + 1) x 50) - 2 (10)
Score: 41–73 (max 77)

And a brilliant solve has put him almost out of reach at this early stage.

Teatime teaser: ALSOBEER -> EARLOBES

Round 11: T P A O B A V T U

C1: outbat
C2: bopata
DC: ABOUT (5) PATTA (5)
OT: ATTAP (5) OUTTA (5) PUTTO (5)
Score: 41–73 (max 82)

Even Adam almost convinced me that his 6 was real, but as it is, it is a double blank from the contestants.

In fine arts, a PUTTO is a representation of a cherubic infant, often shown winged.

Round 12: R E N A L I H N R

C1: ALIEN (5)
C2: RAILER (6)
DC: INHALER (7)
OT: HERNIAL (7)
Score: 41–79 (max 89)

And that 6 means that only a sudden death conundrum can see Adam lose today.

Round 13: V G E O R C E H R

C1: VERGER (6)
C2: RECOVER (7)
OT: COHERER (7) HOVERER (7)
Score: 41–86 (max 96)

And Gavin can't RECOVER now, as that 7 means Adam is the new champion.

Round 14: 75, 4, 6, 2, 9, 4. Target: 301.

C1: 301. (4 x 75) + 9 - (6 + 2) (10)
C2: 301. (75 x 4) + 4 - (6 / 2) (10)
Score: 51–96 (max 106)

And a nice easy numbers means that Adam has the chance for a debut century.

Regular users of Apterous will be aware of Adam's lightning fast conundrum solutions, so I think we should expect some super-quick reactions here.

Round 15: W O K C A N F R Y

1 second

1.5 seconds - BEEEEEEEEEP (oh wait, I'm not playing  )

2 seconds

3 seconds

4 seconds

5 seconds

6 seconds - BUZZZZZZZZZ

C2 buzzes on 6 seconds to say FANCYWORK which is correct.
Final Score: 51–106 (max 116)

Okay, maybe we were expecting a bit much at the end there, but Adam did what he needed to do and he is now the champion for now anyway. An 11-max debut sounds like Adam might be with us for some time.

Join me tomorrow to see how he gets on in the champions' chair.

Till then, bye bye.
