Mike Pickering is going along nicely with 3 wins from 3. He is the personal banker from Hull with an American wife and 3 kids.

Mike's challenger is Gavin Cooksley AKA Gavster to his friends. He's from Southampton and lives with his cat Niko. Bless. He likes his pub quizzes although I'm guessing that he doesn't particularly go for the quiz part of "pub quiz". It would seem Gavster likes a drink or too and as such has ended up walking into road signs and breaking his elbow when on a night out.

Enjoy the show.

Round 1: W E A G S N U P Z

C1: WAGES (5)
C2: USAGE (5)
DC: UNPEGS (6)
OT: PUNGAS (6)
Score: 5–5 (max 6)

A horrible round to open the day with but DC shine spotting one of only 2 possible 6's.

PUNGA is "in Māori mythology, a supernatural being, the ancestor of sharks, lizards, rays, and all deformed, ugly things."

Round 2: G C I E M R O N E

C1: CRIME (5)
C2: CRINGE (6)
DC: GENERIC (7)
OT: GENOMIC (7) INCOMER (7) REGIMEN (7)
Score: 5–11 (max 13)

Both gents aren't hitting form yet as they miss a host of 7's albeit not the most obvious ones. Gavster takes the lead though.

Round 3: A I A S V T E D M

C1: STAVED (6)
C2: AVIATES (7)
DC: dave eva adam MISDATE (7)
OT: DIASTEMA (8)
Score: 5–18 (max 21)

And as Jeff points out, Gav is now flying after soaring into a 13 point lead. Gav is quite good it's plane to see and it looks like Mike has his head in the clouds. I'll stop this now, I'm nOT mARC meAKIN!! Oh, ATAVISM is a nice 7 in that lot too but DIASTEMA (gap between two teeth) kind of dicks on it.

Round 4: K S I E T R O P H

C1: PORKIEST (8)
C2: TROPHIES (8)
Score: 13–26 (max 29)

TROPHIES was a pretty simple spot although Mike shows a bit of flair with the only other 8.

Round 5: 50, 6, 7, 3, 3, 6. Target: 274.

C1: 276.
C2: 273. (50-3)*6-(6+3) (7)
RR: 274. (50-6)*6+3+7 (10)
Score: 13–33 (max 39)

Both men fail to get a low target leaving birthday girl to tidy up for them. Gavin crucially managed to get closer than Mike though to extend his advantage.

DC Guest Time: Tim and his horn return for more punnery.

Teatime teaser: CLIPSALE -> ALLSPICE

Round 6: D M E I N W A M O

C1: DOMAIN (6)
C2: MEADOW (6)
DC: MADWOMEN (8)
Score: 19–39 (max 47)

Wow what an awesome spot from DC there and I don't think it needs an explanation. Mike could have actually put the E onto his DOMAIN for DOMAINE to nick the round. Unfortunately the man from Hull didn't and Gavin still leads him by 20 points.

Round 7: B U A S T V I U R

C1: BURST (5)
C2: BURST (5)
OT: ARBUTUS (7)
Score: 24–44 (max 54)

Very, very tough round with a unique max using the two U's. Well done to anyone who spotting that little bugger.

Round 8: L R E U D R E C R

C1: deruled
C2: curdled
DC: CURDLER (7) ULCERED (7)
OT: RECURRED (8)
Score: 24–44 (max 62)

Mike's phantomitis is back and it would seem he's infected Gavin with it too as they both see a D that wasn't there.

Round 9: A I B T O D P I S

C1: IDIOTS (6)
C2: ADOPTS (6)
DC: BIPODS (6)
OT: PATIOS (6) PATOIS (6) TIBIAS (6)
Score: 30–50 (max 68)

Flat as a witches tit this round. Next.

Susie's Origins of Words: Susie talks about the origins of some words. Tim Vine watches. Jeff nods. Rachel sits looking pretty. Mike wonders what he's having for tea. Gavin's just happy to be there.

Round 10: 25, 2, 10, 6, 4, 8. Target: 565.

C1: 554.
C2: 568. (6*4-2)*25+10+8 (7)
RR: 565. (6*8+4+2)*10+25 (10)
Score: 30–57 (max 78)

Mike can't make up any ground here and it looks as though Gavin is too strong for him. Rachel once again is having to work on her birthday and show them how to do it. Very nice.

Teatime teaser: SAMETOOT -> TOMATOES

Round 11: A N O R N E L N H

C1: LOANER (6)
C2: LOANER (6)
DC: LANNER (6) lennon
OT: NONANE (6)
Score: 36–63 (max 84)

Only 6's on offer in this very meagre round.

Round 12: S T E O X T A N O

C1: SEXTANT (7)
C2: TOAST (5)
DC: annotates NOTATES (7)
OT: TOSTONE (7)
Score: 43–63 (max 91)

Tim laughably can't spell whilst a very last second spot (with a huff) from Mike means he gains some points on Gavin with 3 rounds to go. Can he do it?

Round 13: A T E I L T S E D

C1: DETAILS (7)
C2: DETAILS (7)
DC: DILATES (7) SETTLED (7)
OT: LADETTES (8)
Score: 50–70 (max 99)

The chance was there to beat Gav's 7 with an 8 but it was a tall order to ask to spot that one. These numbers could be crucial...

Round 14: 100, 10, 1, 6, 4, 3. Target: 365.

C1: 365. 3*100+6*10+4+1 (10)
C2: 365. 3*100+6*10+4+1 (10)
Score: 60–80 (max 109)

...unfortunately CECIL is being a dick and spits out an easy target.

Round 15: S E M I T I G H T

C1 buzzes on 2 seconds to say MIGHTIEST which is correct.
Final Score: 70–80 (max 119)

Mike has the last word but that goes for nothing as his run on Countdown is over. You did Hull proud(ish). As for Gavin, let's see if he can add to his one win tomorrow...you never know who's going to appear around the corner... *dramatic music*

...to be continued...

Bye!

I remember entering her solution but I didn't enter what she declared. *facepalm*
