A place in the final against the number one seed David O'Donnell awaits the winner of today's semi-final, and it's the battle of the underdogs... at least as far as the seedings are concerned. Richard and Peter both won 6 heats games, but did so with play of such a high quality (and eventually both losing narrowly) that actually a few people fancied them to overthrow Tim Reypert (3rd seed) and Michael MacDonald (2nd seed), which of course they duly did. Because they're here. Des bigs up both player's impressive scoring records (better averages than many octochamps!) before bringing Peter crashing back down by pointing out that he has only solved one conundrum thus far.

Round 1: G P G O U I S Q A
C1: QUIPS (5)
C2: QUIPS (5)
Score: 5–5 (max 5)
There's a few other fives here, but I don't want to talk about fives in a semi-final for God's sake :X

Round 2: D T B O E I J B E
C1: BETIDE (6)
C2: JIBBED (6)
DC: JOBBED (6)
OT: JOBBIE (6)
Score: 11–11 (max 11)
A jobbie is a colloquial term for ...well something ("I've got the hang of these computer jobbies" is the example given in the dictionary), or it's a piece of poo.

Round 3: G A E N U I K S M
C1: AMUSING (7)
C2: MASKING (7)
DC: GUINEAS (7)
Score: 18–18 (max 18)
A few more sevens here, but again I don't feel compelled to discuss them. Flat selections thus far means both players are yet to drop a point. And we should be building up to an 8 in the next round if the pattern (5,6,7...) continues

Round 4: O I E S P R L L O
C1: SPOILER (7)
C2: pilers
DC: LOOPIER (7)
Score: 25–18 (max 25)

Round 5: 75, 1, 1, 7, 9, 2. Target: 763.
C1: 763.(9+1)*10+7*2-1 (10)
C2: 763.(9+1)*10+7*2-1 (10)
Score: 35–28 (max 35)

Teatime teaser: ROLLAMOB -> BALLROOM

Round 6: R D W E O O N R E
C1: redwood
C2: drowner
DC: ENDOWER (7)
OT: WONDERER (8)
Score: 35–28 (max 43)
Whoopsie for both players.

Round 7: A O E N T R A D E
C1: ORNATE (6)
C2: RANTED (6)
DC: DONATE (6) RODENT (6)
OT: AERATED (7)
Score: 41–34 (max 50)

Round 8: V P P A E A Z H E
C1: PAVE (4)
C2: PAVE (4)
DC: HEAVE (5)
Score: 45–38 (max 55)

Round 9: R O Y E R T L A I
C1: LITERARY (8)
C2: RETAIL (6)
DC: REALITY (7) ARTERY (6)
Score: 53–38 (max 63)
Farntastic spot by Richard as he begins to establish a comfortable lead.

Round 10: 7, 5, 1, 8, 7, 9. Target: 267.
C1: 269.(5*7-7+1)*9+8 (7)
C2: 270.
OT: 267. (5*8-9+7)*7+1 (10)
Score: 60–38 (max 73)

Teatime teaser: CAKEGREW -> WRECKAGE

Round 11: N D T O I D N U O
C1: OUTDID (6)
C2: OUTDID (6)
DC: NOTION (6)
Score: 66–44 (max 79)

Round 12: M N A E A S R S E
C1: SEAMAN (6)
C2: SMEARS (6)
DC: SEAMERS (7)
OT: AMASSER (7) RENAMES (7)
Score: 72–50 (max 86)

Round 13: A I H C E T R I S
C1: CHARITIES (18)
C2: HEARTS (6)
Score: 90–50 (max 104)
This is a great spot by Richard, but he gave the game away a little by winking to somebody in the crowd (well done to the cameraman who caught that!) What a shame they would have missed his word though, as they were being sick into a bag. Richard further shows his delight with some clenched fists as he announces his word. The bag is passed around.

Round 14: 25, 3, 6, 9, 5, 8. Target: 445.
C1: 445.6*3*25-5 (10)
C2: 445.9*25*6/3-5 (10)
Score: 100–60 (max 114)
Peter made a slight slip here as he said "6 minus 3 is 2" instead of "6 divided by 3 is 2". Carol didn't notice, but Richard did, and duly pointed it out to everyone. More bags are requested.

Round 15: C E L E R Y G I N
C2 buzzes on 2 seconds to say GLYCERINE which is correct.
Score: 100–70 (max 124)
Great conundrum spot by Peter - take that Des! - but nowhere enough to best Richard as he deservedly marches into tomorrow's final against number one seed and hot favourite David O'Donnell. A sold first third saw him on maximum points, but he lost his way in a few rounds after that (I'm talking relative to David here!) before the fantastic niner spot... an intriguing final awaits!
