We're all accustomed to our methodist minister Barry Smith by now. Yesterday he achieved his target of 6 victories to better his wife's showing in series 56. The shot of his sneering face mockingly staring into the audience at his no-doubt cowering spouse before the final credits rolled was nothing short of grotesque.

Today, he would face Helen Sadler, which would give him another opportunity to try and assert his superiority over the fairer sex - something which, through his zealous competitiveness with his wife, has shown itself to be the overriding characteristic in this man's way of thinking. Helen is a teacher from Mold with 3 children, who describes herself as versatile, loyal and a good cook. Attributes which no doubt get a big thumbs up from our chauvinistic champion.

(I like Barry really, I was just struggling for an angle :))

Round 1: T J T O A E F H Z
C1: FAZE (4)
C2: HAZE (4)
DC: FETTA (5)
OT: THEFT (5) THETA (5)
Score: 4–4 (max 5)

Round 2: M S U I R T N O A
C1: RATIONS (7)
C2: AMOUNTS (7)
DC: TINAMOUS (8)
OT: MANITOUS (8) NATURISM (8) RAINOUTS (8)
Score: 11–11 (max 13)
Minatours is no good in case you were wondering. It's capitalized anyway, but I dunno if you could pluralize it because I think it was just the labyrinth-dwelling beast's name. A tinamou is a bird, a manitou is a revered American Indian spirit, and a rainout is a cancellation/postponement of an event due to rain. Naturism means pensioners playing volleyball in the altogether for Channel 5 documentaries.

Round 3: L E I N W I G D E
C1: WIELDING (8)
C2: WIELDING (8)
Score: 19–19 (max 21)

Round 4: F T O Q E E S S P
C1: POSSET (6)
C2: POSSET (6)
OT: POETESS (7)
Score: 25–25 (max 28)

Round 5: 25, 8, 8, 5, 1, 3. Target: 383.
C1: 383.(3-1+8+5)*25+8 (10)
C2: 384.
Score: 35–25 (max 38)

Teatime teaser: LARDBEDS -> BLADDERS

Round 6: D N A A G C O R E
C1: GROANED (7)
C2: GANDER (6)
DC: CORDAGE (7)
OT: DECAGON (7) DRACONE (7) CARNAGE (7) CONGAED (7) CRANAGE (7)
Score: 42–25 (max 45)
Poor Helen thought about cordage but alas decided not to risk it. I can understand why (it refers to the cords or ropes of a ship's rigging)
A dracone is a large flexible sausage-shaped container for transporting oil or other liquids over water. I can also understand why Susie didn't offer this one, as she attempted to do it in one of my shows and spent half-a-dozen or so takes pissing herself laughing at the words "large flexible sausage" before abandoning the segment altogether until after the show. Happy times ;)
There is a verb "to conga", and cranage is simply the use of a crane. Or cranes.

Round 7: S C N I E T P S E
C1: ENTICES (7)
C2: INSECTS (7)
DC: INSPECTS (8)
OT: PECTINES (8)
Score: 49–32 (max 53)

Round 8: R C O V A O R S I
C1: ROARS (5)
C2: x
DC: CORSAIR (7)
Score: 54–32 (max 60)
Crappy letters saw poor Helen unable to declare anything. DC didn't mention to Barry that he missed VICARS, but instead went straight in for the kill with corsair, in John's words: "a posh word for a pirate."

Round 9: N B E O I Y T L N
C1: INLET (5)
C2: BENT (4)
DC: NINETY (6) BONNILY (7)
Score: 59–32 (max 67)

Round 10: 75, 10, 9, 3, 6, 3. Target: 872.
C1: 872.(9+3+75)*10+6/3 (10)
C2: 872.(3+9)*75-(3*6)-10 (10)
Score: 69–42 (max 77)

Teatime teaser: SLAPSCUE -> CAPSULES

Round 11: X L M A U O S D E
C1: MODULES (7)
C2: MAULED (6)
Score: 76–42 (max 84)

Round 12: D R I O G D A N I
C1: ADORING (7)
C2: RIDDING (7)
DC: RADIOING (8)
Score: 83–49 (max 92)

Round 13: T H M E U E T L K
C1: KETTLE (6)
C2: KETTLE (6)
DC: HELMET (6) METTLE (6)
Score: 89–55 (max 98)

Round 14: 75, 6, 8, 8, 2, 2. Target: 784.
C1: 784.(75+2)*(8+2)+8+6 (10)
C2: 782.
Score: 99–55 (max 108)

Round 15: A C A T Q U I L T
C1 buzzes on 3 seconds to say ACQUITTAL which is correct.
Score: 109–55 (max 118)

This was, in my opinion, Barry's best showing so far. He was particularly impressive on the numbers, something which gave him that early lead after Helen matched him for the first four rounds. Poor Helen seemed to lose her way a little after that, a letters round defeat straight after left a 17 point gap which Barry never looked like giving her the opportunity to close. On this form he will very likely leave as an octochamp tomorrow. That'll show his wife.

You haven't been submitting these to Corral, have you?

A minotaur can mean a tempermental person but it hasn't made the ODE yet.

Dunno how to submit them to the Corral mate. Don't you need a super secret special password or somesuch?

Lol, if it ain't in the ODE it doesn't exist mate :x I get really upset when people try and shoehorn not-valid-in-Countdown words into my already overcrowded brain...
