Wednesday 22nd September 2021 (Series 84, Preliminary 62)

Post by Rhys Benjamin »

Annedown LXI and I had selection meetings on Monday and Tuesday which took up my evenings, and on Wednesday "drinks after work?" turned into "bloody hell, is that the time?".

R7/8 Anne asks Steven about some of the derogatory names the kids call him. Steven says he's "down wiv da kidz" innit.

R10/11 Anne asks Ryan about the differences between Australian and British English.

Countdown recap for Wednesday 22 September 2021.

OTD in 1989, Baywatch started. The most important thing to watch, according to Anne, was the shape of Pamela Anderson.

C1: Champion Ryan Sutton (4 wins, 422 points.) Charted accountant who's a dogger - sorry, walks other people's dogs.
C2: Challenger Steven Grady. Apterite. From Edinburgh. Maths teacher at a secondary school. Says there's no difference between teaching girls and boys - how diplomatic.
DC: Susie Dent and Kay Burley.
RR: Rachel Riley, who appears to be wearing the Syrian opposition flag.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Enjoy the show.

Round 1: M R D L U I E T I

Ryan: MILDER (6)
Steven: DILUTER (7)
DC: DELIRIUM (8)
Score: 0–7 (max 8, jos 8)
Darren-o-meter: 1/1 (100%)

Steven takes the lead as Kay gets into a state of DELIRIUM.

Round 2: O S E A L N S A G

Ryan: ANGLES (6)
Steven: LESSON (6)
DC: LASAGNES (8) SEASONAL (8)
Score: 6–13 (max 16, jos 16)
Darren-o-meter: 1/2 (50%)

Maths teacher, Steven is, so LESSON keeps within his line of work, but it must be having an effect on Ryan too.

Round 3: 10, 4, 8, 5, 1, 10. Target: 192.

Ryan: 192. (not written down) 5 × 4 × 10 − 8 (10)
Steven: 192. (5 − 4 + 1) × 10 × 10 − 8 (10)
Score: 16–23 (max 26, jos 26)

One of the easiest six smalls you'll ever get.

Teatime teaser: ENIDRESTS -> TIREDNESS

Round 4: E S D F I E L S M

Ryan: DEFILES (7)
Steven: DEFILES (7) (try)
DC: DIESELS (7) MEDFLIES (8)
OT: MISFEEDS (8)
Score: 23–30 (max 34, jos 34)
Darren-o-meter: 1/3 (33%)

Both contestants are on seven here with the fairly common eight MISFEEDS being overlooked.

Round 5: G C N F A I O L T

Ryan: LOCATING (8)
Steven: LOCATING (8)
DC: FLOATING (8)
Score: 31–38 (max 42, jos 42)
Darren-o-meter: 1/4 (25%)

Two eights available here and the contestants get one whilst DC get the other.

Round 6: 50, 1, 2, 6, 10, 5. Target: 367.

Ryan: 367. (50 + 10) × 6 + 5 + 2 (10)
Steven: 367. (5 + 2) × 50 + 10 + 6 + 1 (10)
Score: 41–48 (max 52, jos 52)

Easy enough for both contestants, especially ones of this quality.

It's Kay and Anne's botox diaries, part II, before Anne tries to change the subject and Kay talks about when she was in Singapore to hear the announcement of the host city of the 2012 Olympics. Kay then talks about the time she doorstepped the Queen in 2002, ignoring the entire royal staff to do so.

Round 7: H N B T I O E O P

Ryan: POTION (6)
Steven: POTION (6)
DC: BIOTOPE (7)
OT: HOOPTIE (7) PHOTINO (7)
Score: 47–54 (max 59, jos 59)
Darren-o-meter: 1/5 (20%)

A little bit of magic here as both contestants see POTION.

Round 8: E U D R T A S M A

Ryan: MUSTARD (7)
Steven: AMATEURS (8) (not written down)
OT: MATURASE (8)
Score: 47–62 (max 67, jos 67)
Darren-o-meter: 1/6 (17%)

Anything but an amateurish spot from Steven as he extends the lead to 15 points.

Round 9: 4, 2, 8, 8, 5, 1. Target: 950.

Ryan: -
Steven: 950. ((8 + 4) × 8 − 1) × 5 × 2 (10)
Score: 47–72 (max 77, jos 77)

Amazingly given the 1 and a lack of a 10, this is possible, and Steven sees one of only two solutions for it, and all of a sudden the gap is 25.

Teatime teaser: NEILSAWIT -> WAISTLINE

Round 10: O U G R L E Y I T

Ryan: groutily (try)
Steven: TRILOGUE (8)
Score: 47–80 (max 85, jos 85)
Darren-o-meter: 2/7 (29%)

Susie umms and ahhs over both words, but eventually she rules in favour of Steven to extend his lead now to a whopping 33 points.

Round 11: E S I K A P R O N

Ryan: SPANKER (7)
Steven: PARISON (7)
DC: PARKIES (7) PORKIES (7)
OT: KIRPANS (7) NISPERO (7) OPINERS (7) ORPINES (7) PARKINS (7) PERNIOS (7) PERSONA (7) PINKERS (7) PINKOES (7) PORINAS (7) PORNIES (7) PRASINE (7) PRESOAK (7) PRONASE (7) SNAKIER (7) SOAPIER (7)
Score: 54–87 (max 92, jos 92)
Darren-o-meter: 2/8 (25%)

Flaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat.

OOW A history of yachting (and the word yacht) from Susie Dent.

Round 12: O E H T E B W I U

Ryan: WHITE (5)
Steven: BOTHIE (6)
DC: HOWBEIT (7)
Score: 54–93 (max 99, jos 99)
Darren-o-meter: 3/9 (33%)

HOWBEIT is a very old word, but has been superseded by ALBEIT and HOWEVER.

Round 13: C A M R E D A C I

Ryan: ADMIRE (6)
Steven: ADMIRE (6)
DC: ACADEMIC (8)
OT: ACERAMIC (8)
Score: 60–99 (max 107, jos 107)
Darren-o-meter: 3/10 (30%)

It's all academic for Ryan now as Steven has got himself over the line, which is both excellent for Steven and a shame for Ryan, who could have been an octochamp.

Round 14: 50, 1, 9, 3, 2, 6. Target: 609.

Ryan: 609. 50 × 6 × 2 + 9 (10)
Steven: 609. 50 × 6 × 2 + 9 (10)
Score: 70–109 (max 117, jos 117)

Easy peasy for two contestants of this quality.

Round 15: C L I P B U Y I T

Ryan buzzes on 2.5 seconds to say PUBLICITY which is correct.
Final Score: 80–109 (max 127, jos 127)

Another excellent conundrum solve from Ryan, but it's too little too late. His score of 80 is an excellent score and would have won most games. It's a real shame to lose him.

But on the other hand, well done Steven! He'll be back on Thursday. Join us then.
