Annedown LX and it's part two of the Benjo Countdown recap triple bill.

Countdown recap for Tuesday 21 September 2021.

It's Miniature Golf Day. "I'm told it spoils a good walk." Crikey, did Anne wake up on the wrong side of bed on this recording day?

Enjoy the show.

Round 1: Y M S R U O O A L

Ryan: MOLARS (6)
Allan: LOUSY (5)
DC: AMOROUSLY (18)
Score: 6–0 (max 18, jos 18)
Darren-o-meter: 1/1 (100%)

Dictionary Corner get us off to a lovely start (ba-doom tish) as Ryan takes an early lead.

Round 2: E U E A T S G N R

Ryan: GRANTEES (8) (try)
Allan: REAGENTS (8)
OT: ESTRANGE (8) GREATENS (8) NEGATERS (8) RENTAGES (8) SERGEANT (8)
Score: 14–8 (max 26, jos 26)
Darren-o-meter: 1/2 (50%)

Lots of eights and both contestants don't disappoint. Yesterday's round 13 was visible on the back of Susie's paper, geekily.

Round 3: 50, 1, 9, 7, 4, 8. Target: 860.

Ryan: 860. (9 + 8) × 50 + 7 + 4 − 1 (10)
Allan: -
Score: 24–8 (max 36, jos 36)

Oh dear. How did Allan miss that!?

Teatime teaser: DARNALIEN -> ADRENALIN

TTT1 WE'RE LIKE FIRE AND GASOLINE, COME AND LIGHT IT UP WITH ME, SO HIGH ON ADRENALIN, YOU'RE MY ADRENALINA, JUST ONE TOUCH AND I'LL IGNITE, I'M A FLAME, I'M DYNAMITE, SO HIGH ON ADRENALIN, YOU'RE MY ADRENALINA

Round 4: E A O E P C R M S

Ryan: COMPARES (8)
Allan: COMPARES (8)
DC: CAMPOREES (18)
Score: 32–16 (max 54, jos 54)
Darren-o-meter: 2/3 (67%)

Another unspotted niner, another unspotted darren, and the max is already 54 from 4 rounds...!

Anne asks Ryan if this is the most successful thing he's done since coming to the UK two years ago... and it's either this or dog-walking, so take your pick.

Round 5: B T P M V I I A E

Ryan: vitae (try) (only available as a phrase)
Allan: BEAT (4)
DC: BITMAP (6) TIBIAE (6)
Score: 32–20 (max 60, jos 60)
Darren-o-meter: 2/4 (50%)

Susie gives "aqua vitae" as the example for VITAE^ not being allowed, as opposed to something like, ooh I don't know, curriculum vitae?

Round 6: 50, 75, 6, 1, 7, 4. Target: 458.

Ryan: 458. 75 × 6 + 1 + 7 (10)
Allan: 458. 75 × 6 + 1 + 7 (10)
Score: 42–30 (max 70, jos 70)

Ariana.

Anne and Kay talk about their Botox experiences. Kay claims she "get[s] paid for what [she] looks like, to a certain extent" - so she's not paid for being a journalist? Explains a lot. As a 23-year-old man, this is extremely relatable - even Anne breaks the fourth wall and shares that sentiment...

Round 7: S D S N A U E G I

Ryan: GAUDINESS (18)
Allan: GUISES (6) (not written down)
Score: 60–30 (max 88, jos 88)
Darren-o-meter: 3/5 (60%)

This nine is spotted by a contestant and it means Ryan has double Allan's total after seven rounds.

Anne thinks "come on Allan, you need to catch up" is a cue for him to pick the letters; Allan doesn't think it is, so Anne barks "COME ON!" at him and that springs him into action.

Round 8: O A A I S P R D T

Ryan: DIASPORA (8)
Allan: ADAPTS (6)
DC: PAROTIDS (8)
OT: ADAPTORS (8) PARODIST (8)
Score: 68–30 (max 96, jos 96)
Darren-o-meter: 3/6 (50%)

DIASPORA is a brilliant eight, although the failure of Susie and Kay to mention ADAPTORS gets Allan off the hook.

Round 9: 50, 3, 1, 7, 5, 4. Target: 736.

Ryan: 735. 5 × 3 × (50 − 1) (7)
Allan: -
RR: 736. (50 − 4) × (3 × 5 + 1) (10)
Score: 75–30 (max 106, jos 106)

Allan's numbers have really let him down today, but Ryan's isn't perfect this time either and it's up to Rachel to find that missing 1.

Teatime teaser: COMEAGAIN -> EGOMANIAC

Allan only retired at 59, but worked in the US for 27 years including the "great recession" of 2008-09. Then he moved to the US government.

Round 10: E U O G R C X G O

Ryan: GOUGER (6)
Allan: GOUGER (6)
Score: 81–36 (max 112, jos 112)
Darren-o-meter: 4/7 (57%)

Awful round and both contestants see the only available six.

OOW Allan Barham asks about the origins of the word "pie", but in its idioms too.

Anne asks Ryan whether he thinks he'll win from here, and Ryan attempts to dodge the question. Good move, Ryan.

Round 11: M T N L I A I E F

Ryan: FILAMENT (8)
Allan: MENTAL (6)
Score: 89–36 (max 120, jos 120)
Darren-o-meter: 5/8 (63%)

That might do it, though - another round win, another darren, and a whopping great lead meaning Allan needs to win the next two round with nines just to stay in the game.

Round 12: I A E U D P N R L

Ryan: LAUNDER (7)
Allan: UNPAIRED (8) (risky)
OT: DIPLURAN (8) EPIDURAL (8) PALUDINE (8) PENDULAR (8) UNDERLIP (8) UNRAILED (8) UNREPAID (8)
Score: 89–44 (max 128, jos 128)
Darren-o-meter: 5/9 (56%)

Not enough from Allan (despite the excellent spot), so it's game over as far as the contest is concerned.

Round 13: T N W S E I A B H

Ryan: BASINET (7) (try)
Allan: BASINET (7) (try)
DC: WAHINES (7)
OT: ABSINTHE (8)
Score: 96–51 (max 136, jos 135)
Darren-o-meter: 6/10 (60%)

The most galling thing about this round is Dictionary Corner dropping a point at the last round. Aw, so close, Susie!

Round 14: 75, 25, 2, 3, 6, 7. Target: 872.

Ryan: 872. 6 × 2 × 75 − 25 − 3 (10)
Allan: 893.
Score: 106–51 (max 146, jos 145)

I'm not even going to try and work out how Allan ended up that far out.

Round 15: A V E R T H E R S

Ryan buzzes on 2.75 seconds to say HARVESTER which is correct.
Final Score: 116–51 (max 156, jos 155)

Same buzz time as yesterday and another whopping great hundred to go with it. Ryan is looking ominous here, and he's now halfway to becoming an octochamp.

Can he be stopped? Find out tomorrow.

(And it's now 2:20am so it won't be a triple bill, soz)
