Annedown LXIII and insert witty joke here.

Countdown recap for Friday 17 September 2021.

International Country Music Day.

By the way, All4 is very inconsistent as to which device you're using and its ad lengths. I normally watch these on my iPad (where you get nearly 4-minute ad breaks) but there were no ads in the first break on my Smart TV, which is what I used today (but I got a full 4 minutes on the second one, boooo). The downside to this, however, is you can't skip through anything easily.

C1: Champion Ryan Sutton (1 win, 95 points.) Ozzie chartered accountant. Been on Letters & Numbers in Australia, so he has an advantage...?
C2: Challenger Jo Leverett. Been working in a restaurant. During the pandemic, it became a takeaway. They do "a range of things" like gourmet burgers with a South American and Caribbean twist.
DC: Susie Dent and Pam Ayres.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Enjoy the show.

Round 1: S N P D A E O H A

Ryan: PANDAS (6)
Jo: handsoap (try)
DC: DAPHNES (7) DAPSONE (7)
OT: PAESANO (7) PANADES (7)
Score: 6–0 (max 7, jos 7)
Darren-o-meter: 0/1 (0%)

Jo's eight is two words and Ryan gets himself off the mark as a result.

Round 2: W S C U I O T M E

Ryan: CUTIES (6)
Jo: MOUSE (5)
DC: SCOUT (5) TIMEOUS (7)
OT: COSTUME (7) OECIUMS (7) OUTSWIM (7)
Score: 12–0 (max 14, jos 14)
Darren-o-meter: 0/2 (0%)

Ryan doubles his lead with Jo only stuck on five.

Round 3: 25, 4, 10, 8, 7, 2. Target: 321.

Ryan: 321. (10 + 7 − 4) × 25 − 8 ÷ 2 (10)
Jo: 321. Mistake in working.
Score: 22–0 (max 24, jos 24)

Ryan sees a way of getting this spot on, and Jo.... doesn't.

Teatime teaser: SOURLOVE -> OVERSOUL

Round 4: R T L O I S A E D

Ryan: DARIOLES (8) (try)
Jo: LOITERS (7)
DC: IDOLATERS (18) ISOLATED (8)
OT: STEROIDAL (18)
Score: 30–0 (max 42, jos 42)
Darren-o-meter: 0/3 (0%)

Susie gets the Apterite standard of IDOLATERS, whereas once again Ryan extends his lead and this is already looking like a done deal.

Round 5: P M L S E I A F O

Ryan: IMPALES (7)
Jo: ampoles (try)
DC: FAILS (5) FOALS (5)
OT: APLOMES (7) LIPOMAS (7) OPALISE (7)
Score: 37–0 (max 49, jos 49)
Darren-o-meter: 0/4 (0%)

Jo misspells AMPOULES and Ryan now leads by a whopping 37 points to none.

Round 6: 100, 25, 10, 2, 9, 1. Target: 809.

Ryan: 809. (10 − 2) × 100 + 9 (10)
Jo: 809. (10 − 2) × 100 + 9 (10)
Score: 47–10 (max 59, jos 59)

Ariana.

Pam gets to plug her book YET AGAIN, and gets to read out YET ANOTHER animal poem. Skip!

Round 7: T L D N A O I E G

Ryan: LEGATION (8)
Jo: LEGATION (8) (not written down)
DC: TOENAIL (7) DELATION (8) GELATION (8)
OT: DELATING (8)
Score: 55–18 (max 67, jos 67)
Darren-o-meter: 0/5 (0%)

Didn't we have this round yesterday?

Round 8: R H S N A E O P U

Ryan: SHARPEN (7)
Jo: unhears
DC: PERSONA (7) ORPHANS (7)
OT: HOARSEN (7) PHERANS (7) PHONERS (7) PONHAUS (7) POSAUNE (7) PRONASE (7) PRUNASE (7) ROHUNAS (7) SENHORA (7) UNHORSE (7) UNROPES (7) UNSHARP (7)
Score: 62–18 (max 74, jos 74)
Darren-o-meter: 0/6 (0%)

Since you can't UNHEAR^ anything (sadly), it's sevens for everyone else.

Round 9: 3, 1, 9, 7, 2, 8. Target: 177.

Ryan: 179. 9 × 2 × (7 + 3) − 1 (7)
Jo: 173.
RR: 177. (9 × 7 − 8 ÷ 2) × 3 (10)
Score: 69–18 (max 84, jos 84)

If Ryan had got the 10 by doing 8 + 3 - 1, then he'd have had the 7 left over... so a bit of blunder here from Ryan.

Teatime teaser: GLUEBOND -> BLUDGEON

Round 10: D M E E R G I T O

Ryan: MERITED (7)
Jo: REMOTED (7)
DC: GRIMED (6) GEOMETRID (18)
Score: 76–25 (max 102, jos 102)
Darren-o-meter: 1/7 (14%)

Pam steals Susie's thunder by defining (and butchering the pronunciation of GEOMETRID) for her.

Round 11: C N S R I E E J T

Ryan: RECITES (7)
Jo: JESTER (6)
DC: REJECTS (7) SINCERE (7)
OT: REINJECTS (18)
Score: 83–25 (max 120, jos 109)
Darren-o-meter: 2/8 (25%)

So Susie gets GEOMETRID but not the infinitely more common REINJECTS!? How odd.

Susie talks about archery and about being unstrung.

Round 12: P B R U I A S R A

Ryan: BURPS (5)
Jo: BRIARS (6)
DC: AIRBUS (6) BURSAR (6)
OT: ABURAS (6) ARABIS (6) BRAAIS (6) RUBAIS (6) RUPIAS (6) SUBPAR (6) SUPARI (6)
Score: 83–31 (max 126, jos 115)
Darren-o-meter: 2/9 (22%)

Only five for Ryan, but it's flaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat.

Round 13: M D L K O E O R A

Ryan: EARLDOM (7)
Jo: LOOKED (6)
DC: ROOMED (6) morelo
OT: MORALED (7)
Score: 90–31 (max 133, jos 122)
Darren-o-meter: 2/10 (20%)

Ryan gets one of the two available maxes and leads now by 59, which is more than enough with just two rounds to go.

Round 14: 75, 1, 7, 6, 4, 9. Target: 229.

Ryan: 229. 75 × (7 − 4) + 9 − 6 + 1 (10)
Jo: 226.
Score: 100–31 (max 143, jos 132)

Ryan tons up by seeing an easy numbers game.

Round 15: P E R C Y D E N T

Ryan buzzes on 18 seconds to say ENCRYPTED which is correct.
Final Score: 110–31 (max 153, jos 142)

110 out of 153 is not bad going and Ryan takes his good form into the weekend, when he comes up with Kay Burley in Dictionary Corner. Ew.

Join us then. Goodbye. ;)
