Annedown LIV and it's back to Loose Women-down after Blackdown on Friday. Anne's wearing one of her electric shock collars again.

Round 1: S D R C A E A I Y

Adele: SACRED (6)
Jodine: SCARED (6)
DC: CIDERS (6) ARCADES (7)
OT: DAYCARES (8)
Score: 6–6 (max 8, jos 7)
Darren-o-meter: 1/1 (100%)

DAYCARE, as far as I know, is an American word for a daytime nursery. Anyway, both contestants are off to a good start with sixes apiece.

Round 2: G B T N E A O S F

Adele: FASTEN (6)
Jodine: TANGOES (7)
DC: GABFEST (7)
OT: NOSEBAG (7) ONSTAGE (7)
Score: 6–13 (max 15, jos 14)
Darren-o-meter: 1/2 (50%)

Pam Ayres is clearly not listening, as she says she got TANGOES as if Jodine hasn't just said it.

Round 3: 25, 75, 2, 10, 3, 10. Target: 756.

Adele: 756. 10 × 75 + 3 × 2 (10)
Jodine: 756. 10 × 75 + 3 × 2 (10)
Score: 16–23 (max 25, jos 24)

thank u, next

Teatime teaser: MANVISIT -> VITAMINS

4 mins of ads on All4. This is getting ridiculous.

Round 4: O U N D L E W T M

Adele: MOUNTED (7)
Jodine: MODULE (6)
DC: TUNED (5) MOULTED (7) MOUNDLET (8)
OT: MELTDOWN (8)
Score: 23–23 (max 33, jos 32)
Darren-o-meter: 1/3 (33%)

Adele levels the tie, but misses out on an extra point.

Round 5: R S N I O O A L E

Adele: LOONIES (7)
Jodine: AILERONS (8)
DC: SOONER (6)
OT: EROSIONAL (18)
Score: 23–31 (max 51, jos 40)
Darren-o-meter: 2/4 (50%)

Once again, Pam equals Jodine, although the fact Jodine got AILERONS passed Pam by.

Jodine explains her unusual, nails-down technique of playing the piano. Well, I say nails, but "talons" are probably better. Crikey!

Round 6: 50, 100, 2, 4, 6, 5. Target: 223.

Adele: 224. 100 × 2 + 6 × 4 (7)
Jodine: 224. 100 × 2 + 6 × 4 (7)
RR: 223. (50 + 5) × 4 + 6 ÷ 2 (10)
Score: 30–38 (max 61, jos 50)

It's not the easiest but the 100 was a red herring here.

Pam does some rather nondescript poetry (did you expect anything different?) about the time she ordered a red football for her son which was promptly ruined by her Jack Russell. Anne finds it fantastic... blimey.

Round 7: S R T M I A U A N

Adele: martians (capitalised)
Jodine: STRAIN (6)
DC: TRAUMAS (7) ATRIUMS (7)
OT: NATURISM (8) TAMARINS (8)
Score: 30–44 (max 69, jos 57)
Darren-o-meter: 2/5 (40%)

Surprised MARTIANS^ is capitalised, as I thought it is increasingly being used as a catch-all term for aliens (Tate, 2006) but it allows Jodine to take an extra six points.

Round 8: B N P O A S D O T

Adele: SPOON (5)
Jodine: ADOPTS (6)
DC: SNOOP (5) PANTOS (6)
OT: STOPBAND (8)
Score: 30–50 (max 77, jos 63)
Darren-o-meter: 3/6 (50%)

Jodine takes out another six points and the gap is now 20 points.

Adele gives us some of the sciencey stuff about how she's going to save the world and cure cancer. Basically, like with the Oxford Covid vaccine, it's about boosting the immune systems.

Round 9: 50, 100, 2, 7, 8, 3. Target: 518.

Adele: 521. (8 + 2) × 50 + 3 × 7 (7)
Jodine: 516. (not written down) Mistake in working.
RR: 518. (8 × 3 + 50) × 7 (10)
Score: 37–50 (max 87, jos 73)

Jodine's fudge doesn't even get off the ground, letting Adele back in with the gap down to 13.

Teatime teaser: UTTERAIR -> TRAITEUR

Round 10: C L S P I E O T D

Adele: DESPOTIC (8)
Jodine: POLICES (7)
Score: 45–50 (max 95, jos 81)
Darren-o-meter: 4/7 (57%)

DESPOTIC is a wonderful spot and gets Adele within 5 points, as well as well-deserved round of applause.

Round 11: G R Q E I I E C R

Adele: ICIER (5)
Jodine: ICIER (5)
DC: RICER (5) GRICER (6)
OT: CIERGE (6)
Score: 50–55 (max 101, jos 87)
Darren-o-meter: 4/8 (50%)

Only fives here but Susie can stretch it to a six.

Susie, albeit not in the form of a poem, gives us the origin of some of her favourite flowers: sunflower, daisy, orchid, lavender, gardenia, anemone.

Round 12: P K T A U E V S D

Adele: STAVED (6)
Jodine: UPDATES (7)
DC: PUKED (5) uptakes (from SD - blunder!)
OT: ADEPTUS (7)
Score: 50–62 (max 108, jos 94)
Darren-o-meter: 4/9 (44%)

Massive blunder from Susie as UPTAKE is a mass noun, so is not pluralise-able. Jodine takes the lead back out to 12 and Adele has just 3 rounds to win the game, but hopefully she'll keep saving the world regardless.

Round 13: M R G A I E R F E

Adele: FAIRER (6)
Jodine: MERGER (6)
DC: GRIEF (5) RIFER (5) FIREARM (7) REFRAME (7)
OT: FERRIAGE (8)
Score: 56–68 (max 116, jos 100)
Darren-o-meter: 5/10 (50%)

Sixes apiece and the gap is still 12 points...

Round 14: 75, 100, 50, 25, 10, 7. Target: 953.

Adele: 955. (100 + 25) × 7 + 75 + 50 ÷ 10 (7)
Jodine: 944.
RR: 953. 100 × 10 − 50 + 75 ÷ 25 (10)
Score: 63–68 (max 126, jos 110)

What is Jodine thinking here, picking 4 large with a lead above 10!? And how have they both missed this!?!?! And how is Adele back in the game!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Round 15: N E T T L E F A D

Jodine buzzes on 2 seconds to say FLATTENED which is correct.
Final Score: 63–78 (max 136, jos 120)

Jodine makes up for her tactical blunder and buzzes with the clock saying 2 seconds, although it honestly felt faster watching it, and deposes our super scientist who will one day save the world.

I'm sad Adele's going; I really liked her. Jodine now has two wins under her belt, and will be seat-swapping yet again as she goes for her sixth win across her three runs.

Join us again for Countdown. Probably a bit later as I'm at the Surrey Members Forum after work tomorrow. Goodbye. ;)
