Friday 27th August 2021 (Series 84, Preliminary 44)

Post by Rhys Benjamin »

Annedown XLIV and it's the end of her ninth week in the crazy chair. Will we have back-to-back octochamps? Let's see.

Countdown recap for Friday 27 August 2021.

Anne says that on this day in 1955 the Guinness Book of World Records was first published. Rachel reminds Anne about Countdown's appearances in said book. Anne says it's the only show with 3 girls on it. Loose Women, counters Rachel - no, they've got four according to Anne.

C1: Champion Jeremy Slaney (7 wins, 646 points.) Returnee from 2002. Gardener from Kent.
C2: Challenger Lisa Horan. From Greater Manchester. "Sorts out utility bills". She then goes into saleswoman mode and says they have a cashback card too.
DC: Susie Dent and Myleene Klass, wearing red shoulder pads straight out of 1982.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

R01: R P D I E A G D L

R06: 25, 6, 7, 6, 7, 3. Target: 942.
R07: R N R E E O U P T
R08: L S E O O T N I D
R09: 25, 8, 7, 7, 9, 10. Target: 909.
TTT: RISELATE - "He's never late to rise, he's usually the first one up."
R10: B S F T E I E P W
R11: L M N A O A O R E
R12: L Y M P E A O S L

Enjoy the show.

Round 1: R P D I E A G D L

Jeremy: PREDIAL (7) (try)
Lisa: GLIDER (6)
DC: GIRDLED (7) PIDDLER (7)
OT: PEDRIGAL (8)
Score: 7–0 (max 8, jos 7)
Darren-o-meter: 1/1 (100%)

Not as in pre-dialling a phone number, but apparently an archaic and historical term.

Round 2: K C T D A U A O S

Jeremy: STOCK (5)
Lisa: STACK (5)
DC: DUCATS (6)
OT: DOTAKUS (7)
Score: 12–5 (max 15, jos 13)
Darren-o-meter: 2/2 (100%)

Both contestants stuck on five here, with Dictionary Corner able to extend it to a six but once again no max for Susie.

Round 3: 75, 5, 4, 7, 3, 9. Target: 377.

Jeremy: 377. 75 × 5 + 9 − 4 − 3 (10)
Lisa: 377. 75 × 5 + 9 − 7 (10)
Score: 22–15 (max 25, jos 23)

thank u, next

Teatime teaser: GOOSERUG -> GORGEOUS

Round 4: I O E S G T R H O

Jeremy: GOITRES (7)
Lisa: goosier (risky)
DC: SHOOTER (7) GORIEST (7) GHOSTER (7)
OT: ETHROGS (7) GOOIEST (7) HERIOTS (7) HOISTER (7) HOOTERS (7) OGREISH (7) ORTHOSE (7) REHOIST (7) RESHOOT (7) RESIGHT (7) SHOOTIE (7) SHORTIE (7) SIGHTER (7) SOOTHER (7) SOOTIER (7) THEOROS (7)
Score: 29–15 (max 32, jos 30)
Darren-o-meter: 2/3 (67%)

Flaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat. Lisa falls foul of the two-syllable adjective rule.

Round 5: D W S T I I E U M

Jeremy: TEDIUM (6) - rejected tediums
Lisa: WIDEST (6)
DC: DUTIES (6)
OT: DIMWITS (7) MIDWISE (7) MISDIET (7)
Score: 35–21 (max 39, jos 36)
Darren-o-meter: 2/4 (50%)

Both contestants are on six and Jeremy does wonder about extending it to tediums, but it's not pluralisable.

Round 6: 25, 6, 7, 6, 7, 3. Target: 942.

Jeremy: 936. ((7 + 6) × 25 − 7 − 6) × 3 (5)
Lisa: -
RR: 942. (25 × 6 + 7) × 6 (10)
Score: 40–21 (max 49, jos 46)

Jeremy sees a bizarre way of 312 times 3 for his 6-away solution, but Rachel shows it's perhaps easier than you think.

Myleene plugs her new album, and talks about doing converted-into-lullaby music in lockdown, which is the basis of her new album. Motown lullabies, apparently: the crossover you didn't know you needed.

Round 7: R N R E E O U P T

Jeremy: PUNTER (6)
Lisa: POUTER (6)
DC: TROUPER (7)
OT: NEUROPTER (18)
Score: 46–27 (max 67, jos 53)
Darren-o-meter: 3/5 (60%)

TROUPER refers to a dancer, as in dance troupe, but the nine goes begging. Not DC's best day ever so far.

Round 8: L S E O O T N I D

Jeremy: NOODLES (7)
Lisa: LOTIONS (7) (not written down)
DC: OILSTONE (8)
OT: EIDOLONS (8) LOONIEST (8) SOLENOID (8)
Score: 53–34 (max 75, jos 61)
Darren-o-meter: 3/6 (50%)

Both contestants once again are on 7s, OILSTONE is a good spot from DC.

Round 9: 25, 8, 7, 7, 9, 10. Target: 909.

Jeremy: 910 (not written down). (10 × 7 + 7 + 25) × 9 − 8 (7)
Lisa: -
OT: 909. ((10 + 8) × 7 − 25) × 9 (10)
Score: 60–34 (max 85, jos 68)

Nothing from Lisa or Rachel here and Jeremy is allowed to extend his lead again. His numbers have been excellent throughout his run, although not seeing the solution here.

Teatime teaser: RISELATE -> EARLIEST

Round 10: B S F T E I E P W

Jeremy: SWIPE (5)
Lisa: FEWEST (6)
DC: BESTIE (6) BEFITS (6) PEEWITS (7)
OT: WEBSITE (7)
Score: 60–40 (max 92, jos 75)
Darren-o-meter: 3/7 (43%)

Lisa wins a round and it brings the gap back to 20 points. Surprised at Susie not seeing WEBSITE, a far more common word than PEEWITS.

Round 11: L M N A O A O R E

Jeremy: ALMONER (7)
Lisa: MOANER (6)
DC: MOANA (5) AMORAL (6)
OT: MOREANA (7) NEMORAL (7)
Score: 67–40 (max 99, jos 82)
Darren-o-meter: 3/8 (38%)

Jeremy hits back immediately to extend his lead out to 27 points with just four rounds to go.

Susie talks about some epithets for politicians, and points out that's nothing new. She disclaims this is not directed at anyone in particular, before going through her neo-swears of quockerwodger, snollygoster, and throttlebottom.

Round 12: L Y M P E A O S L

Jeremy: MAYPOLES (8)
Lisa: SMALL (5)
DC: PLAYSOME (8)
OT: MALEOYLS (8)
Score: 75–40 (max 107, jos 90)
Darren-o-meter: 3/9 (33%)

Jeremy dances around the maypole and is now just one round away from octochampdom.

Round 13: N R G E I A R M R

Jeremy: REARING (7)
Lisa: REARMING (8) (questionable)
OT: REMARGIN (8)
Score: 75–48 (max 115, jos 98)
Darren-o-meter: 3/10 (30%)

And although Lisa can get a good 8, she needed a 9 to keep the game alive and now Jeremy is an octochamp!

Round 14: 3, 4, 5, 6, 6, 9. Target: 149.

Jeremy: 149 (not written down). (9 × 3 − 4) × 6 + 6 + 5 (10)
Lisa: 150.
Score: 85–48 (max 125, jos 108)

And Jeremy extends his lead by seeing a good six small solve...

Round 15: L A Y O N E E G G

Jeremy buzzes on 8 seconds to say GENEALOGY which is correct.
Final Score: 95–48 (max 135, jos 118)

... and finishes it off in style! Jeremy is an octochamp, we have back-to-back octochamps to boot, and we now have three octochamps in nine weeks. I wonder if Matt Gould will now be worried about there being more than eight octochamps in this series? #JusticeForCorinna

Anyway, we'll be back on Monday with two new contestants. Join us then. Goodbye. ;)
