Round 1: E A E D R L M D C

Brendan: CLEARED (7)
Paul: CREAMED (7)
DC: DECLARED (8)
Score: 7–7 (max 8)

DC DECLARED the best word, but our players are both of the mark immediately here.

Round 2: R O T R E I T B T

Brendan: BITTER (6)
Paul: TROTTER (7)
DC: TITTER (6)
OT: ORBITER (7)
Score: 7–14 (max 15)

Time for Paul to be on his TROTTERs as he takes an early lead.

Round 3: 1, 8, 3, 3, 4, 10. Target: 141.

Brendan: 150.
Paul: 140. (10 + 4) x ((3 / 3) + 8 + 1) (7)
RR: 141. ((8 + 3 + 3) x 10) + 1 (10)
Score: 7–21 (max 25)

Oh dear, quite a bad miss by the players, but Paul doubles his lead.

Teatime teaser: CIDERFOLK -> FROLICKED

Round 4: Y J A U T M F E A

Brendan: aunty
Paul: MATEY (5)
DC: MEATY (5)
OT: TUMEFY (6)
Score: 7–26 (max 31)

Mistaken letters a problem again for Brendan...

TUMEFY is a verb meaning to become swollen.

Round 5: I O I E N M Z V D

Brendan: DEMON (5)
Paul: DIVINE (6)
DC: IONIZED (7) DOMINIE (7)
OT: MIDVEIN (7) MIDZONE (7)
Score: 7–32 (max 38)

Paul is certainly in a DIVINE mood today..., Brendan needs a lot of luck at this moment at time.

MIDVEIN is the central vein of a leaf.
A MIDZONE is an intermediate zone.

Round 6: 75, 25, 2, 9, 3, 4. Target: 935.

Brendan: 934. (4 x 3 x 75) + 25 + 9 (7)
Paul: 933.
RR: 935. ((75 x 25) - (9 - 4)) / 2 (10)
Score: 14–32 (max 48)

Well, he's got the gap down to below 20 now...

Dr. Phil is cut out for the third day in four.... :o :o :o

Round 7: A I E I L V F N S

Brendan: SALVE (5)
Paul: FALSE (5)
DC: FLAVINES (8) FLAVINS (7)
OT: FINALISE (8) VAILENSI (8)
Score: 19–37 (max 56)

8's available, but 5 will do for the players.

VAILENSI is another word for VIOLENCY, a rare term for violence.

Round 8: G T E U M Q W A S

Brendan: QUEST (5)
Paul: QUEST (5)
DC: MUTAGES (7)
Score: 24–42 (max 63)

Both players are on a QUEST for better than a 5, but to no joy, with DC going darrenic with a 7.

Round 9: 10, 8, 2, 1, 7, 1. Target: 899.

Brendan: 900. (8 + 2) x 10 x (1 + 7 + 1) (7)
Paul: 900. (8 + 2) x 10 x (1 + 7 + 1) (7)
Score: 31–49 (max 70)

An impossible 6 small this time, but both players get as close as possible.

Teatime teaser: LIBELCASE -> SLICEABLE

Round 10: G P O U R W N I G

Brendan: POURING (7)
Paul: GROUPING (8)
Score: 31–57 (max 78)

A great 8 from Paul, and he's surely nearly there now... :D :D :D

Round 11: A E U A S H R P T

Brendan: HEARTS (6)
Paul: thrapes
DC: PASTURE (7) UPRATES (7)
OT: ARETHUSA (8)
Score: 37–57 (max 86)

Hmmm, Paul suggests a dialect word possibly spelt "thrapes", but wasn't asked by Susie to clarify the spelling, but there is a word called THREAPS, which has a similar pronunciation, so he could've meant that....

Hopefully, that won't be crucial...

Susie's Origins Of Words talks about the origins of "duff".

Round 12: S R E O L T I P R

Brendan: PORTERS (7)
Paul: ROPIEST (7)
DC: PORTLIER (8) SPORTIER (8)
OT: PETROILS (8) PISTOLER (8) POITRELS (8)
Score: 44–64 (max 94)

PETROIL is petrol to which has been added a small proportion of oil, used as a combined fuel and lubricant in some two-stroke engines; = "mixture".
A PISTOLER is a rare term for a PISTOLEER, a soldier armed with a pistol.
A POITREL (or POITRAIL) is a piece of armour to protect the breast of a horse.

Round 13: E A O I N C S L K

Brendan: LACKIES (7)
Paul: SLACKEN (7)
DC: OILCANS (7) SANICLE (7)
OT: OILCAKES (8)
Score: 51–71 (max 102)

A double does of 7's keeps the gap at 20 points..., can Brendan pull off a super Houdini and win his 6th show... :?: :?: :?:

An OILCAKE is a mass of compressed linseed or other plant material left after oil has been extracted, used as fodder or fertilizer.

Round 14: 100, 8, 10, 3, 4, 8. Target: 803.

Brendan: 803. (8 x 100) + 3 (10)
Paul: 803. (8 x 100) + 3 (10)
Score: 61–81 (max 112)

Nope, a simple numbers appears and Paul is now the new champion.

Round 15: B A N K C H U C H

Paul buzzes on 13 seconds to say HUNCHBACK which is correct.
Final Score: 61–91 (max 122)

And Paul gets the conundrum to seal a great debut showing. :D :D :D

So, Brendan's reign as champion is over, and his 5 wins put him at #6 in the leaderboard, but with there still being 4 months of this elongated series left, the chances of him being in the finals are probably slim, but who knows... :?: :?: :?:
