Round 1: W G Q R I O E P R

Brendan: ROPIER (6)
Junaid: GROPER (6)
OT: GORIER (6) GRIPER (6) GROWER (6) PEROGI (6) PORGER (6) REGROW (6)
Score: 6–6 (max 6)

Well, at least there's no gropier... :P :P :P

A PEROGI (or PIEROGI or PIROGI) is a small dough dumpling stuffed with a filling such as potato or cheese, typically served as a dish with onions or sour cream.
Chiefly in Jewish usage in the British Isles, a PORGER is a person whose occupation is to porge meat, a slaughtered animal ritually clean in accordance with Jewish religious laws by removing the sinews and veins.

Round 2: S N U G E C A S D

Brendan: CAUSED (6)
Junaid: CAGED (5)
DC: UNCASED (7) UNCAGED (7) SUNDAES (7)
OT: ASCENDS (7) AUGENDS (7) DEGAUSS (7) SCUNGES (7) UNCAGES (7) UNCASES (7)
Score: 12–6 (max 13)

Brendan takes the lead, but Junaid might regret sticking the UN in front of his CAGED.

In Mathematics Computing, an AUGEND is the number to which another is added.
A SCUNGE is a disagreeable person.

Round 3: 100, 25, 1, 7, 4, 1. Target: 967.

Brendan: -
Junaid: -
RR: 967. ((100 + 25 - 4) x (7 + 1)) - 1 (10)
Score: 12–6 (max 23)

A complete blank from our players, but even with two 1's, Rach solves it once again. :geek: :geek: :geek:

Teatime teaser: MYACCOUNT -> CONTUMACY

Round 4: N I T R O E X S J

Brendan: JOINERS (7)
Junaid: nitros
DC: NITRO (5) JOINTS (6) JOINTERS (8) REJOINTS (8)
Score: 19–6 (max 31)

Another case of forgetting to add a letter, but this time it doesn't matter for Brendan, as he pulls further ahead.

Round 5: C S F M U A E O T

Brendan: COAST (5)
Junaid: STEAM (5)
DC: OUTFACES (8) COSTUME (7) MUCOSAE (7)
Score: 24–11 (max 39)

Whilst the players stick on 5's, DC find a darrenic 8. 8-) 8-) 8-)

Round 6: 75, 100, 6, 9, 7, 10. Target: 374.

Brendan: -
Junaid: 375. 10 / (9 - 7) x 75 (7)
RR: 374. (100 - 75 - (9 - 6)) x (10 + 7) (10)
Score: 24–18 (max 49)

Brendan's numbers are still drawing a blank for now, as Junaid gets back to within 6 points.

Dr. Phil talks about his cancelled appearance at the Edinburgh Fringe, and working as an agony aunt during the pandemic.

Round 7: A O I E R C D F B

Brendan: CARDIE (6)
Junaid: bodier
DC: AEROBIC (7) BROCADE (7) FEDORA (6)
OT: BARCODE (7) CARBIDE (7) FORBADE (7) RADIOBE (7)
Score: 30–18 (max 56)

Brendan's lead doubles again, as Junaid's 6 isn't in, and Brendan's is.

A RADIOBE is an apparently cell-like object seen to form in large numbers in gelatin solutions in the presence of radium salts, originally claimed to be a living organism that owed its existence to radioactivity.

Round 8: D U V N I T N E C

Brendan: TEND (4)
Junaid: INVENT (6)
DC: TINNED (6)
OT: DUNITE (6) DUNNIT (6) INCENT (6) INDENT (6) INDUCE (6) INDUCT (6) INTEND (6) TUNNED (6) UNDINE (6) UNITED (6) UNTIED (6) VINTED (6)
Score: 30–24 (max 62)

And the status quo returns immediately as Junaid cancels out that 6 with one of his own.

DUNITE is a green to brownish coarse-grained igneous rock consisting largely of olivine.
In the US, to INCENT is to provide with an incentive.
To TUN is to store (wine or other alcoholic drinks) in a tun, a large beer or wine cask.
To VINT is to produce wine or another alcoholic drink.

Round 9: 50, 100, 3, 5, 4, 4. Target: 697.

Brendan: 696. (100 x (3 + 4)) - 4 (7)
Junaid: 696. (100 x (3 + 4)) - 4 (7)
RR: 697. (4 x 4 x 50) - 100 - 3 (10)
Score: 37–31 (max 72)

Seems easier than it is, but it's another good spot by Rach, as this low-scoring game remains evenly poised....

Teatime teaser: PILLBONES -> OPENBILLS

Round 10: O N T U R Y L V I

Brendan: TURN (4)
Junaid: TOUR (4)
DC: NITRO (5) TURION (6)
OT: IRONLY (6) LUTINO (6) NITRYL (6) NOVITY (6) NYTRIL (6) UNITOR (6) UNOILY (6)
Score: 41–35 (max 78)

More 4's, but there's loads of unusual 6's around too...

IRONLY means as or like iron; rigidly, determinedly; coldly.
A LUTINO is a bird (especially a cage bird of the parrot family) with more yellow in the plumage than usual for the species.
NITRYL is the nitro group —NO₂ or the nitronium ion NO₂ +.
A NOVITY is an innovation; a novelty.
NYTRIL is a synthetic fibre used in textiles, consisting mainly of a long chain polymer of vinylidene dinitrile.
UNOILY refers to food that is not cooked with or containing too much oil or fat.

Round 11: Y W R K D E O I N

Brendan: WORKED (6)
Junaid: WORKED (6)
DC: WONKIER (7) KEYWORD (7)
OT: DOWNIER (7) WONKERY (7)
Score: 47–41 (max 85)

Well those 6's WORKED out nicely... :P :P :P

WONKERY is an enthusiastic or excessive interest in the specialized details of a particular subject or field, especially political policy.

Susie's Origins Of Words talks about the nation's most popular mispronounced words.

Round 12: A T E C L O M N A

Brendan: LAMENT (6)
Junaid: LAMENT (6)
DC: MALONATE (8)
OT: METACONAL (18)
Score: 53–47 (max 103)

A fantastic 9 is missed, but will our players LAMENT their missed opportunities.... :?: :?:

METACONAL relates to METACONE, a cusp on the posterior buccal corner of a mammalian upper molar tooth.

Round 13: D T R Z I O A O B

Brendan: BRAID (5)
Junaid: BRAID (5)
DC: TOROID (6)
OT: ADROIT (6) BORZOI (6) OTRIAD (6)
Score: 58–52 (max 109)

Not many big words coming today, but this game is still up for grabs...

A BORZOI is a large Russian wolfhound of a breed with a narrow head and silky, typically white, coat.
An OTRIAD (or OTRYAD) is a detachment of soldiers, support staff, etc.; a team of workers.

Round 14: 75, 50, 1, 4, 1, 10. Target: 765.

Brendan: -
Junaid: 765. ((75 + 1) x 10) + 4 + 1 (10)
Score: 58–62 (max 119)

WOAH!!!! He's behind from the get-go, but Junaid has taken the lead with one round to go.... :o :o :o

So, it's time for the first crucial DIGITAL conundrum :!: :!: :!: 8-) 8-) 8-)

Round 15: L O N E R S P E N

Brendan buzzes on 4 seconds to say PERSONNEL which is correct.
Final Score: 68–62 (max 129)

Well, it's not to be for Junaid, as Brendan gets his resolve back and gets the conundrum to seal his second win. :D :D :D

So, will he make it a hat-trick tomorrow...., and will we see the confident and impressive Brendan from Monday, or the struggling Brendan from today :?: :?: :?:
