Round 1: K L J F E A M O S

Jonathan: FLAMES (6)
Phil: FLAKES (6)
OT: AMOLES (6) JALEOS (6) MAJOES (6) MALEOS (6)
Score: 6–6 (max 6)

Opposite ends of the spectrum in a way to start with, as fire and ice clash, but there's nothing better than that.... :P :P

Round 2: E S B A N D I E G

Jonathan: DEBASING (8)
Phil: BEADING (7)
DC: BANDIES (7)
OT: AGENISED (8)
Score: 14–6 (max 14)

A nice spot by Jonathan to give him an early lead here.

Round 3: 50, 25, 100, 75, 3, 4. Target: 697.

Jonathan: 697. ((100 + 75) x 4) - 3 (10)
Phil: 697. ((4 + 3) x 100) - (75 / 25) (10)
Score: 24–16 (max 24)

Teatime teaser: BRAVETREE -> VERTEBRAE

Round 4: S R O T F E O R U

Jonathan: FOOTERS (7)
Phil: ROUTERS (7)
DC: FOOTSURE (8) froster FERROUS (7) ROOTERS (7) ROOFERS (7)
Score: 31–23 (max 32)

Jonathan might've chickened and lost a max game possibility, but I don't think he'll be too fussed...., or will he... :?: :?:

Round 5: V H D A E G T U E

Jonathan: HEATED (6)
Phil: HEAVED (6)
DC: VAGUE (5) AGUED (5)
Score: 37–29 (max 38)

Jonathan: 160. (2 x 3 x 25) + 9 + 1 (10)
Phil: 160. (2 x 3 x 25) + 9 + 1 (10)
Score: 47–39 (max 48)

Kate talks about her latest book, Thinking On My Feet, and how she decided on what to put on the front cover.

Round 7: R M V U A U E Q U

Jonathan: QUAVER (6)
Phil: QUAVER (6)
DC: MARQUE (6)
OT: MAUVER (6)
Score: 53–45 (max 54)

Round 8: B S A D T A N G E

Jonathan: BANDAGES (8)
Phil: BANDAGES (8)
Score: 61–53 (max 62)

4 nice easy rounds later, and still 8 points is the gap...

Round 9: 50, 25, 75, 100, 1, 3. Target: 920.

Jonathan: 925. ((100 + 75 + 50) x (3 + 1)) + 25 (7)
Phil: 925. ((100 + 75 + 50) x (3 + 1)) + 25 (7)
RR: 921. (7)
OT: 921. ((((50 - 1) x 25) + 3) x 75) / 100 (7)
Score: 68–60 (max 69)

Pfft, that was a nasty 4 large, and it turns out to be just that! Impossible too, probably won't be the first impossible one in this series.

Teatime teaser: POORPAINT -> APPORTION

Round 10: W S D E T H O I S

Jonathan: SHOWIEST (8)
Phil: SHOWIEST (8)
DC: THESIS (6) HOISTED (7)
OT: SIDESHOW (8)
Score: 76–68 (max 77)

Both players have certainly proven to be the SHOWIEST, and this game is still up for grabs...

Round 11: L P L E I O T E A

Jonathan: EPILATE (7)
Phil: POLITE (6)
DC: PELOTA (6) PETIOLE (7)
OT: OPALITE (7) PALLITE (7) PEALITE (7)
Score: 83–68 (max 84)

...or is it? Is that 7 the killer blow that Jonathan has been so desperate for.... :?: :?:

Susie's Origins Of Words talks about the origins of "sweet" and "suitcase".

Round 12: E O Z N D S C W A

Jonathan: DOWNCASE (8)
Phil: DOZENS (6)
DC: DEACONS (7)
Score: 91–68 (max 92)

Round 13: D R P E O I R R E

Jonathan: REORDER (7)
Phil: PERIOD (6)
DC: preorder
OT: DERPIER (7) ORDERER (7) PEDRERO (7)
Score: 98–68 (max 99)

And 2 more brilliant spots have put the game to bed, is Jonathan's chicken of FOOTSURE going to cost him a fabled MAX GAME.... :?: :?: :? :?

Round 14: 5, 1, 9, 2, 4, 5. Target: 833.

Jonathan: 825. 5 x 5 x ((9 x 4) - 2 - 1) (5)
Phil: -
RR: 832. (7)
OT: 832. ((((5 x 5) - 2) x 9) + 1) x 4 (7)
Score: 103–68 (max 106)

Well, Phil decides to give us a 6 small swansong, which gives us yet another impossible one, and drops Jonathan a couple more points off the max.

Round 15: M I C R O M A S S

Phil buzzes on 29 seconds to say "I've had a lovely time, thanks, I've got no idea", which is incorrect.
Jonathan buzzes on 29.5 seconds to say MACROMISS which is incorrect.
The answer was COMMISSAR.
Final Score: 103–68 (max 116)

Pfft, well if that's the sign of things to come with conundrums, this will be a very tough CoC indeed!! :P :P

Well, it was hard for Jonathan, as Phil made it hard for him to pull away, but it's a great start by the Series 73 champion, who will play either Philip Aston or Noel McIlvenny in the first quarter-final in 12 days time. :) :) :)

Join me tomorrow for the 2nd preliminary match between Ann Dibben and John Cowen. ;) :) :D  8-)
