Jonny Peppiatt is three wins into a run that has already included three crucial conundrums (including one tie-breaker). He still has a chance to take Tony Lock’s place in the finals or possibly carry on his run in series 75. Can he keep it going against Ollie Heath?

C1: Champion Jonny Peppiatt (3 wins, 269 points.). An economics student at the University of Exeter and choral singer. Looks a little like Roger Federer.
C2: Challenger Ollie Heath. A student at Warwick University, studying MORSE. Once attached 100 wooden clothes pegs to his face.
DC: Susie Dent and Richard Madeley.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Ollie: GLIDERS (7)
DC: DARIOLES (8) SERAGLIO (8)
OT: GASOLIER (8) GIRASOLE (8) RADIOLES (8)
Score: 7–7 (max 8)

A solid start from both players who each get a 7 from a nice nerve-settlingly easy opening round. DC beats them with old favourite DARIOLES plus SERAGLIO.

Round 2: S U P R O C E I M

Jonny: PRECIOUS (8)
Ollie: MOUSIER (7)
DC: COMPRISE (8)
OT: PEROSMIC (8)

Ollie: 887. (4 + 5) × 100 − 7 − 6 (7)
RR: 882. (7)
Score: 15–14 (max 23)

Jonny picks 2-large and it’s a slightly difficult one. Ollie gets closer and wipes out most of Jonny’s early lead with his 4-away solution. Rachel is one away.

Teatime teaser: SHOECUBE -> BOUCHEES

Round 4: D O R A L U X O E

Jonny: LOADER (6)
Ollie: RELOAD (6)
DC: ORDEAL (6) DOLOUR (6)
OT: ROULADE (7)
Score: 21–20 (max 30)

6s everywhere in the studio. No-one gets ROULADE.

Round 5: R N B P A I E M U

Jonny: PRUNE (5)
Ollie: MARINE (6)
DC: BUMPIER (7) PENUMBRA (8)
Score: 21–26 (max 38)

Ollie takes the lead as Jonny only gets a 5. DC does well to spot the unique max.

Round 6: 25, 75, 2, 3, 3, 10. Target: 174.

Jonny: 174. 75 × 2 + 25 − 3 ÷ 3 (10)
Ollie: -
Score: 31–26 (max 48)

Ollie goes for two large ones as well but makes a boob, allowing Jonny to retake the lead with his exact solution.

Richard talks about a photo of the iceberg that sunk the Titanic.

Round 7: G W L O A E N I R

Jonny: LOWERING (8)
Ollie: LOWERING (8)
DC: REGIONAL (8)
Score: 39–34 (max 56)

A similar story here, with both players declaring the same 7 (which was the max).

Round 9: 25, 100, 5, 9, 7, 7. Target: 531.

Jonny: 532.
Ollie: 531. (100 + 9) × 5 − 7 − 7 (10)
Score: 46–51 (max 73)

The lead switches again as Ollie does well to get an exact solution with Jonny one away. It’s a tight game.

Teatime teaser: TONSHUGS -> GUNSHOTS

Round 10: T E S A I T M A R

Jonny: MATIEST (7)
Ollie: MATTERS (7)
DC: MISTREAT (8)
OT: METATARSI (18)
Score: 53–58 (max 91)

Round 12: Y H I T E O S H D

Jonny: HOSTED (6)
Ollie: HOISTED (7)
DC: ISOHYET (7)
Score: 59–71 (max 105)

Ollie breaks away at just the right time with HOISTED. A galling one for Jonny, who had HOSTED. DC has an obscure 7, ISOHYET, which is a line on a map connecting points having the same amount of rainfall in a given period.

Round 13: T N W A A I M S R

Jonny: TRAINS (6)
Ollie: STRAIN (6)
DC: TAMARINS (8)

Jonny: 541.
Ollie: 538. (100 + 25 + 9) × (7 − 3) + 2 (7)
RR: 539. (100 − 25 + 2) × 7 (10)
Score: 65–84 (max 123)

Ollie picks 2-large again and seals the victory by getting within one. Rachel has the relatively simple exact solution.

Round 15: B U T T E R J I G

Ollie buzzes on 2 seconds to say JITTERBUG which is correct.
Final Score: 65–94 (max 133)

Ollie finishes off in style with a quick conundrum.

So Jonny's run comes to an end and Tony Lock will be in the finals. It was an even match on the letters but Ollie outscored Jonny on the three of the four numbers games which ultimately made the difference. Join James for Ollie’s next game.
