Countdown recap for Monday 9 November 2015.

C1: Champion Keith Kan (2 wins, 164 points) Former manager at Aston Martin, who proved he kould win last week with two victories. Looks pretty relaxed and happy to be there.

C2: Challenger Matthew Le Tassier– A statistical consultant from Ealing who loves “bad films”, mentions a film called Sharknado which sounds like a bad film before he even describes the plot. Matthew is an apterite for anyone who doesn’t already know that.

DC: Susie Dent and Michelle Collins.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Round 1: R K M E O E L F S

Keith: folmers
Matthew: MOLES (5)
DC: SMOKER (6)
OT: FLEERS (6) FORMES (6) KERMES (6) KREEFS (6) MERLES (6) MESELF (6) MORELS (6) MORSEL (6) RESOLE (6)
Score: 0–5 (max 6)

That’s a bizarre risk by the champ who as a result kan’t score on this round, therefore apterite Matthew takes the lead immediately.

Round 2: Y I R C E Q U I D

Keith: DICIER (6)
Matthew: DICIER (6)
DC: CIRQUE (6)
OT: CIDERY (6) QUIRED (6)
Score: 6–11 (max 12)

No obscure risk from Keith this time as he equals Matthew’s max and gets on the score board.

Round 3: 7, 1, 2, 10, 75, 25. Target: 738.

Keith: 738. ((75-1)*10)-2 (10)
Matthew: 738. ((75-1)*10)-2 (10)
Score: 16–21 (max 22)

Part one of the show ends with a simple numbers game and its ten more points each.

Teatime teaser: PRUNEGAS -> SPEARGUN

Round 4: N A D S E N U E T

Keith: untensed
Matthew: UNSEATED (8)
Score: 16–29 (max 30)

Unlike Keith’s previously disallowed word, untensed does sound plausible, but its not in and the apterite is now on a bigger lead.

Round 5: N G M I E A D H I

Keith: IMAGINED (8)
Matthew: IMAGINED (8)
DC: MIDGIE (6)
Score: 24–37 (max 38)

Nice darrenic max from the contestants, DC had that too, but also tell us about the shorter MIDGIE.

Dc Guest – Michelle talks about her experiences in music in the early 1980’s when she was in a band called the Vexations and played with a number of 80’s icons. This was well before he acting career kicked off.

Round 6: 7, 5, 1, 7, 6, 4. Target: 377.

Keith: 377. (((4+5)*7)*6)-1 (10)
Matthew: 377. (((4+5)*7)*6)-1 (10)
Score: 34–47 (max 48)

Good solve by Keith to get that. It’s of course also good from Matthew but he has the advantage of all the apterous practice which Keith doesn’t have.

Round 7: T M S O E U R P R

Keith: PUREST (6)
Matthew: POUTERS (7)
DC: POSTURER (8)
OT: PROSUMER (8) TROUPERS (8)
Score: 34–54 (max 56)

Keith slips to a twenty point deficit after Matthew beats him by one. It looks likely that our latest apterite champion is going to be crowned today.

Round 8: B O C E T R I A I

Keith: TRIBE (5)
Matthew: AEROBIC (7)
DC: EROTICA (7)
OT: ABIOTIC (7) CIBORIA (7) ICEBOAT (7)
Score: 34–61 (max 63)

Matthew may have been fishing for BACTERIA there.

Round 9: 10, 3, 8, 5, 100, 25. Target: 954.

Keith: 957.
Matthew: 953. ((100-5)*10)+3 (7)
OT: ((100*10))+5)-((25-8)*3) 954. (10)
Score: 34–68 (max 73)

No one in the studio can get it and Matthew is the closest of the contestants with one away. Rachael is also flummoxed but the solution was possible.

Teatime teaser: MITCHPIE -> MEPHITIC

Round 10: N O G L E S O I O

Keith: LOOSING (7)
Matthew: LOONIES (7)
DC: LEGIONS (7) OLOGIES (7)
OT: GOOLIES (7) LINGOES (7) NOOGIES (7) OLINGOS (7) SOLOING (7) SOOLING (7)
Score: 41–75 (max 80)

Loads of sevens here and the contestants both spot one. DC tell us about OLOGIES and the BT advert that made the word famous.

Round 11: V F Z A E A S N E

Keith: favenas
Matthew: VANES (5)
DC: EVENS (5) NAVES (5)
OT: VEENAS (6)
Score: 41–80 (max 86)

Desperation time for Keith as he tries his third made up word of the game. Its not in (again) and he has alll but lost now.

OoW – Susie tells us about a number of words relating to the dining table and their origins

Round 12: W O D P I W E T P

Keith: TOPPED (6)
Matthew: TIPPED (6)
DC: POWIE (5)
OT: DOPPIE (6) TOPPIE (6)
Score: 47–86 (max 92)

TIPPED and TOPPED as well as DOPPIE and TOPPIE here. This round means that Matthew has the game won and will be tomorrow’s returning champion.

Round 13: I E U J L D T X O

Keith: JILTED (6)
Matthew: TUXEDO (6)
DC: OUTLIED (7)
Score: 53–92 (max 99)

The recap writer didn’t allow OUTLIED, but Susie has the most up to date Oxford dictionary source at her hands meaning the writer has it wrong.

Round 14: 1, 10, 4, 3, 9, 100. Target: 370.

Keith: 370. (100*4)-(10*3) (10)
Matthew: 370. (100*4)-(10*3) (10)
Score: 63–102 (max 109)

Simple stuff, that bizarrely I didn’t get when watching it, I had the more convoluted ((100/4)+9+3)*10, completely missing the simple solution spotted (easily) by both Keith and Matthew.

Round 15: P L O D A L E R T

No one buzzes. The answer was PATROLLED.
Final Score: 63–102 (max 119)

So no conundrum spot on his debut for Matthew but he has his first win. As a seasoned apterite an octochamp run seems likely, but nothing is certain until he has the wins on the board.

Keith was a likable champion and hopefully he has enjoyed his time on the show, that is what really matters after all.

Jennifer will be here with tomorrow’s recap and can i just wish the best to everyone competing at CODUB this weekend, hope the event goes well (which Im sure it will).
