Round 1: G E S O T I L E M

Thomas: motiles
Alwyn: MOIST (5)
DC: EGOTISM (7)
OT: ELEGIST (7) ESTOILE (7) GIMLETS (7) LOGIEST (7)
Score: 0–5 (max 7)

Thomas tries motiles which he knew was valid without the s. This is an example of how knowing meanings of obscure words can help from time to time.

Round 2: S D L I U T G O D

Thomas: GUILDS (6)
Alwyn: GUILT (5)
DC: GOUTS (5) STUDIO (6)
OT: DILDOS (6) GUIDOS (6) GUILTS (6) OUTDID (6) STOLID (6)
Score: 6–5 (max 13)

Thomas rebounds immediately from his miscalculation in round one and takes the lead with a max word.

Round 3: 8, 2, 6, 7, 10, 100. Target: 510.

Thomas: 510. ((7-2)*100)+10 (10)
Alwyn: 510. ((7-2)*100)+10 (10)
Score: 16–15 (max 23)

Thomas will hope not all the rounds are as easy as this one as he tries to get ahead of his challenger.

Teatime teaser: GIRLEYED -> GREEDILY

Round 4: N M Y A E C R O W

Thomas: ROMANCE (7)
Alwyn: CREAMY (6)
OT: ACRONYM (7) ANYMORE (7) CREWMAN (7)
Score: 23–15 (max 30)

ROMANCE gives Thomas an eight point lead as Alwyn fails to match him. Early signs in this game are that this is not the strongest challenger to Thomas’s crown.

Round 5: S I P U M E Z I F

Thomas: SPUME (5)
Alwyn: SPUME (5)
DC: UPSIZE (6)
OT: UMPIES (6)
Score: 28–20 (max 36)

Contestants get five as DC UPSIZE them both with the max.

Round 6: 3, 6, 10, 8, 1, 100. Target: 810.

Thomas: 810. (8*100)+10 (10)
Alwyn: 810. (8*100)+10 (10)
Score: 38–30 (max 46)

Its rounds like this that enable big scores to be notched up and its ten a piece with another easy numbers game.

DC Guest – Jon talks about his “twenty-five minute career” as a waiter which included him assuming a prawn cocktail was a drink and how he dropped plates causing the food to fall into a woman’s handbag.

Round 7: R U S O L U D E A

Thomas: ROULADES (8)
Alwyn: LOADER (6)
DC: ARDUOUS (7)
OT: ROULEAUS (8)
Score: 46–30 (max 54)

Thomas seemed to know that ROULADES would be there if he got a final A and it comes up trumps for him.

Round 8: S G W O E N B O A

Thomas: WAGONS (6)
Alwyn: BONGOS (6)
DC: BOWENS (6)
OT: GABOONS (7) NOSEBAG (7)
Score: 52–36 (max 61)

The first DC beaters of the game are available in this round. GABOONS are hardwood trees found in west Africa.

Round 9: 8, 7, 3, 9, 1, 50. Target: 753.

Thomas: 753. ((8+7)*50)+3 (10)
Alwyn: 753. ((8+7)*50)+3 (10)
Score: 62–46 (max 71)

Thats three out of three for easy numbers games and both players increase their scores by another ten points.

Teatime teaser: TOMSTACK -> MATTOCKS

Round 10: T N H E A V O N E

Thomas: NEATEN (6)
Alwyn: HEAVEN (6)
DC: NOVENA (6) NEONATE (7)
Score: 68–52 (max 78)

Its DC that get the one max word here with NEONATE, a baby of less that four weeks in the world.

Round 11: Q A M I J E R A T

Thomas: TAMARI (6)
Alwyn: jamier
DC: MATIER (6) IRATE (5)
OT: RAMJET (6) TARIQA (6)
Score: 74–52 (max 84)

A bit of desperation from Alwyn who must have known JAMMIER had two M’s. Thomas is now more than twenty ahead and any worries he may have had about a seriously flat game (especially given the numbers rounds) will be gone now.

OoW – Susie tells us about dictionaires and how she reads the OED everyday before talking about a new thersaurus that can be edited before giving us some synomyns for kissing.

Round 12: H R D I O P L A D

Thomas: HAIRDO (6)
Alwyn: PLAID (5)
DC: DIPOLAR (7)
Score: 80–52 (max 91)

Thomas groans as DC state DIPOLAR which he chose not to risk.

Round 13: C E T A N I R O T

Thomas: CARNOTITE (18)
Alwyn: CERTAIN (7)
DC: CORTINATE (18)
Score: 98–52 (max 109)

CARN Thomas TITE up this game? Yes he can.

Round 14: 1, 1, 8, 2, 7, 75. Target: 511.

Thomas: 511. (75-2)*7 (10)
Alwyn: 515.
Score: 108–52 (max 119)

Ten more points for Thomas and he looks good for another high score if he can get the conundrum

Round 15: N O C R E D I I T

Thomas buzzes on 2 seconds to say DIRECTION which is correct.
Final Score: 118–52 (max 129)

...and he quickly gets the conundrum to tie up a third win. Adam Curran is the next challenger for Thomas, Jennifer Steadman will be here tomorrow to take you through that one.

All the best to everyone on c4countdown...
