Round 1: A I O S T G X E L

Wayne: GOALIES (7)
Colin: EXALTS (6)
DC: LIGATES (7) AGEIST (6) STOGIE (6)
OT: GEOTAXIS (8)
Score: 7–0 (max 8)

Wayne's GOALIES help him take the early lead, although there was a super impressive darrenic 8 left alone.....

GEOTAXIS is the motion of a motile organism or cell in response to the force of gravity.

Round 2: T N L T I E U S A

Wayne: latties
Colin: TITLES (6)
DC: LATTES (6) SALIENT (7) SITUATE (7) LUTENIST (8) INSULATE (8)
OT: LUTANIST (8)
Score: 7–6 (max 16)

Wayne's latties are no good for Susie, unlike Colin's TITLES. A pair of 8's from DC as well. :)

Round 3: 50, 5, 2, 3, 8, 8. Target: 784.

Wayne: -
Colin: 784. (50 - (3 - 2)) x (8 + 8) (10)
Score: 7–16 (max 26)

Wayne messes up, letting Colin in to take the lead. 8-)

Teatime teaser: BELLFAIL -> FALLIBLE

Round 4: N T G O E A H P E

Wayne: NEATH (5)
Colin: PHONATE (7)
DC: HEPTAGON (8) PATHOGEN (8)
Score: 7–23 (max 34)

And another great spot by Colin sees him go even further clear, only topped by DC's double 8. 8-) 8-)

Round 5: O E A G S T E R D

Wayne: RESTAGED (8)
Colin: RESTAGED (8)
DC: DEROGATES (18)
Score: 15–31 (max 52)

Neither player looked too certain, but RESTAGED is a great eight, whereas DC hit the heights with DEROGATES. ;) :) :D  8-)

Round 6: 100, 7, 6, 4, 7, 1. Target: 989.

Wayne: 989. ((100 - 1) x (6 + 4)) - (7 / 7) (10)
Colin: 989. ((100 - 1) x (6 + 4)) - (7 / 7) (10)
Score: 25–41 (max 62)

It looked tricky at first glance, but both players see past the façade to bag themselves 10 points each. :D :D :D

Jon does his impersonations of Judge Rinder and Prince Charles.

Round 7: I A S M E Z G S A

Wayne: MASSAGE (7)
Colin: MASSAGE (7)
DC: AMAZES (6) IMAGES (6)
OT: ASSEGAI (7)
Score: 32–48 (max 69)

Now a double MASSAGE. Yes please. :P :P :P

An ASSEGAI (or ASSAGAI) is a slender, iron-tipped, hardwood spear used chiefly by southern African peoples.

Round 8: C R B I E A S B L

Wayne: crabbies
Colin: scribable
DC: SCABBIER (8) SCRIBBLE (8) SCRABBLE (8)
OT: CALIBRES (8) CLABBERS (8)
Score: 32–48 (max 77)

Oh dear, clearly those MASSAGEs made them take their eyes off the ball......  Interesting seeing SCRABBLE there as well, as that it is the first time it has appeared in a letters round in the entire history of the show :!: :!:

To CLABBER is to curdle or cause to curdle.

Round 9: 5, 8, 1, 7, 9, 3. Target: 206.

Wayne: -
Colin: 207. Mistake in working.
RR: 206. (((5 x 3) + 8) x 9) - 1 (10)
Score: 32–48 (max 87)

Wayne seems to want to evoke memories of Monday's dramatic win, by bringing the 6 small up again, but unfortunately for him, he blanks again, but luckily for him, Colin messes up. Luckily, we have Rachel on hand to tidy things up.

Teatime teaser: MANNYHAD -> HANDYMAN

Round 10: K R V T U A I A R

Wayne: varta
Colin: ARIA (4)
DC: VIRTU (5) RAITA (5)
OT: UAKARI (6)
Score: 32–52 (max 93)

What a rank selection here. Colin comes up with a nice ARIA, but Wayne's varta isn't there, so the gap goes up to 20 points now.

A UAKARI is a short-tailed monkey with a long, coarse coat and a bare red, white, or black face, found in the Amazon rainforest. (Genus Cacajao, family Cebidae)

Round 11: U E I N C M S R O

Wayne: MINCERS (7)
Colin: COINERS (7)
DC: INCOMERS (8) CONSUMER (8)
OT: INSOURCE (8) MUCRONES (8) SERMONIC (8)
Score: 39–59 (max 101)

Some MINCES and COINERS from the contestants, but DC have some INCOMERS, and even a CONSUMER. :P

MUCRONES (or MUCROS) are the plural of MUCRO, a short sharp point at the end of a part or organ.

Susie's Origins of Words talks about the origins of the Riot Act and "kamikaze".

Round 12: N D Q T U E O E P

Wayne: QUOTED (6)
Colin: QUOTED (6)
DC: PENTODE (7)
Score: 45–65 (max 108)

Both players QUOTED the same, but DC went all darrenic with a PENTODE. 8-)

Round 13: R A E I D V P N T

Wayne: PIRATED (7)
Colin: PRIVATE (7)
DC: DIPTERAN (8)
Score: 52–72 (max 116)

This game is still on a knife edge, as the gap is the precarious 20 point margin.....

Round 14: 50, 8, 5, 2, 4, 9. Target: 784.

Wayne: 777.
Colin: 786. (8 x 2 x 50) - (9 + 5) (7)
RR: 784. (50 - (5 - 4)) x 8 x 2 (10)
Score: 52–79 (max 126)

Well, this was very bizarre...... The numbers are almost the same as in the first numbers game, and yet neither player notices, especially as Colin could've used basically the same method that he used in round 3 to get the 10 points again....    :? :? :?: :?: :P :P

Round 15: L O A T H M U G O

Wayne buzzes on 11 seconds to say GOALMOUTH which is correct.
Final Score: 62–79 (max 136)

Wayne literally gets the GOALMOUTH scramble, but it's too little, too late, as Colin is now the new champion.

But, he faces a tough task to remain in the champions' chair tomorrow, as our very own Thomas Carey enters the fray. Will he be the next member on the Apterous conveyor belt to get into the champions' chair :?: :?: Join Tracey tomorrow to find out.

I'm busy next Wednesday, so I've kindly asked Giles to take up my recap, so I'll be back at the end of the month, when a certain Matt Le Tissier will be on the show, this time in the contestants' seat, rather than in DC.

So, till then, bye for now. ;) :) :D  8-)
