Enjoy the show.

Round 1: W N O A F G I O D

Pat: faint
Rob: wooding
DC: WOOFING (7)
Score: 0–0 (max 7)

Somewhat underwhelming start as Pat goes for a five that isn’t there and Rob has an invalid seven.

Round 2: S N U E K A G S I

Pat: casing
Rob: SINKAGE (7)
DC: SINKAGES (8)
Score: 0–7 (max 15)

Susie asks Pat is he meant kasing but he actually meant casing, meaning he has used a letter that isn’t there in every round so far (all two of them).
Rob gets the lead with SINKAGE which we hear can be pluralised.

Round 3: 10, 2, 3, 7, 7, 50. Target: 260.

Pat: 260. ((7-2)*50)+10 (10)
Rob: 260. ((7-2)*50)+3+7 (10)
Score: 10–17 (max 25)

It might be that Rob didn’t write down his method and forgot to say Not Written Down so had to make a slight variation to Pats solution to keep it valid. Whether he did or he didn’t both get ten points here.

Teatime teaser: GARYFULL -> FRUGALLY

Round 4: V G O E M R J U A

Pat: MORGUE (6)
Rob: GRAVE (5)
DC: VAGUER (6) MAUVER (6)
OT: MURAGE (6) VOGUER (6)
Score: 16–17 (max 31)

Two morbid words from the contestants but its Pat’s longer such word that gets the points, so theres just a point in it now.

Round 5: G M O I T N E U S

Pat: EMOTING (7)
Rob: EMOTING (7)
DC: MOISTEN (7) IGNEOUS (7) TONGUES (7)
OT: MITOGENS (8)
Score: 23–24 (max 39)

Both contestants –ING their way to seven more points.

Round 6: 5, 6, 75, 100, 50, 25. Target: 965.

Pat: -
Rob: 970. ((100+50)*6)+75+5 (7)
RR: 965. ((100-6)*(50/5))+25 (10)
Score: 23–31 (max 49)

Rob goes for four large and the risk pays off as he gets seven points as Pat completely mises.

Round 7: H Y E I R T E A L

Pat: REALITY (7)
Rob: HEATER (6)
DC: EARTHILY (8) HEARTILY (8) LEATHERY (8)
OT: ETHERIAL (8)
Score: 30–31 (max 57)

But Pat bounces back and for the second time this game gets to a single point behind the challenger.

Round 8: Q T I U S B A E D

Pat: BISQUE (6)
Rob: BUSTED (6)
DC: BIDETS (6) SUBEDIT (7)
OT: BASTIDE (7)
Score: 36–37 (max 64)

Easy sixes here…

Round 9: 1, 3, 5, 4, 2, 75. Target: 603.

Pat: 603. ((4*2)*75)+3 (10)
Rob: 603. ((4*2)*75)+3 (10)
Score: 46–47 (max 74)

Pat likes his one large, hoping for easy ones which this most certainly is.

Teatime teaser: IRISDENT -> NITRIDES

Round 10: R P B I U O S R E

Pat: PROBES (6)
Rob: ROPES (5)
DC: SUPERIOR (8) SOUPIER (7) BRUISER (7)
Score: 52–47 (max 82)

Rob looks really nervous on screen and this round is evidence of him struggling to cope with the pressure, as Pat takes the lead for the first time in the game.

Round 11: F L A I C T O U S

Pat: FLOUTS (6)
Rob: OUTSAIL (7)
DC: FACTIOUS (8)
OT: CLAFOUTIS (18)
Score: 52–54 (max 100)

But Rob OUTSAILs Pat in this round to retrieve the lead after just one round.
There’s an obscure nine here that no one gets (hardly surprising though). CLAFOUTIS is is a baked French dessert of fruit, traditionally black cherries, arranged in a buttered dish and covered with a thick flan-like batter

Round 12: P N A I L D I E T

Pat: PLANTED (7)
Rob: PLANET (6)
DC: PLAITED (7) PINTAIL (7)
OT: PANTILED (8)
Score: 59–54 (max 108)

Nerves continue to affect Rob who clearly really wants to win but is being stifled by nerves as he again misses easy sevens to lose his lead again.

Round 13: N C U A D N O A H

Pat: HOUND (5)
Rob: HOUND (5)
DC: UNHAND (6)
OT: CHANNA (6) DONCHA (6)
Score: 64–59 (max 114)

Letters rounds finish with a tough one and the champ just has his nose in front.

Round 14: 5, 8, 25, 75, 100, 50. Target: 126.

Pat: 125.
Rob: 126. (100+50)-((75/25)*8) (10)
Score: 64–69 (max 124)

Rob chooses four large again and he takes the lead for third time with a solve that Pat misses.
Rob’s been nervous but he still has a shot as it’s a crucial.

Round 15: E L L N I N E T Y

Pat buzzes on 5 seconds to say LENIENTLY which is correct.
Final Score: 74–69 (max 134)

So Pat retains the chair with a conundrum spot. Rob will be gutted but it seems like nerves were too big an obstacle for him to overcome.

So Pat follows up his win over Rhys with another victory over a youngster. Maybe he can continue going, join (James L?) tomorrow for his third game.

Also, glad to hear that St Albans was a success this past weekend, and well done to Matthew Brockwell on wining his first event. Would’ve loved to have been there myself but sadly couldn’t make it this year.

Best wishes everybody.
