It's Tuesday and we have a new champion in Simon Tomlinson, he'll need a few more wins if he wants to make the finals.

Nick's introductory monologue today talks about a dog who more or less walks itself! Apparently it's owner was having a cigarette one time when the bus came and the dog got on itself, sat on it's normal seat and went to the park on it's own.

Craig: wounders
DC: WARDENS (7) DOWNERS (7) WANDERS (7) RONDEAU (7)

An unfortunate start for Craig as he attempts an 8 which is invalid, but going unnoticed is a valid anagram which gives us a Darren straight away!

I fancied a change from footballers

Simon: LOITERS (7)
Craig: LOITERS (7)
DC: GODLIEST (8) STODGIER (8)

The contestants are a pair of LOITERS here, but DC give us both of the 8s.

Simon: 173. (5+5+75)*2+(7-4) (10)

Craig: NAMELY (6)
DC: MEANLY (6)
OT: LAYMEN (6) LUMPEN (6) PLENUM (6) PNEUMA (6)

Simon: GHOSTED (7)
Craig: GHOSTED (7)
DC: GOBSHITE (8)
Score: 31–20 (max 40)

Round 6: 7, 8, 1, 8, 75, 50. Target: 602.

Simon: 602. 75*8+8-7+1 (10)
Craig: 602. 75*8+8+1-7 (10)
Score: 41–30 (max 50)

Despite Rachel saying "This could be tricky", turns it is was rather easy... moving on

Myleene talks about her trip to the Yap Islands in Micronesia, andhow she was flown there with her grand piano to meet a tribe who had never encountered Westerners and how she wrote a song with them in three days.

A mammoth EIGHTEEN 7s available here but Craig can't find one and allows Simon to extend his lead in a very flat round

Simon: HAIR (4)
Craig: MINOR (5)
DC: MOHAIR (6)
OT: MANOIR (6) MARRON (6)

Simon: 992. (8*4+8)*25-7-1 (7)

An excellent spot from Craig pulls the deficit back to 12 points as Simon has his offering disallowed.

OoW: Susie talks about dodgy lawyers, having come across the word "pettifogger", a legal practitioner who takes on petty cases as well as "shyster"

Round 12: I E B R A P J S S

Simon: PRAISES (7)

Craig: LANDER (6)
DC: GROANED (7) RANKLED (7)
OT: DANGLER (7) GNARLED (7) LADRONE (7)
Score: 73–61 (max 101)

I was hoping for an I as it's the only letter that stemmed with the first 8 to get a 9 but Simon picks a consonant. Six more points each but a smattering of 7s were on offer

Round 14: 10, 4, 6, 25, 50, 100. Target: 973.

Simon: 973. 100*10-25-(6-4) (10)

Craig gambles with a 3 Large in an attempt to get within crucial range but it's an easy one and Simon is over the finishing line

Round 15: N A T C H P E R M

No one buzzes. The answer was PARCHMENT.
Final Score: 83–71 (max 121)

Nothing from the contestants so it's up to the audience and someone wins themselves a mug as Craig is sent off back to Robin Hood land with a goody bag and Nick's best wishes. Simon will be back tomorrow and will want a few more wins if he wants to make the finals, join Robbo to see if he can make it three.

I'll be back next Tuesday. Ta-ra.

No mention of whether ANTIQUER would have been valid. Would it?

It would have to be listed under this entry, and it's not.

Have you established that this is indeed the dictionary Countdown uses now? I wasn't sure whether it was actually the free-for-all one or a more comprehensive one that you have to pay a subscription for.

I thought this was established ages ago. I wasn't aware of any doubt.
