Katie: RODENTS (7)
DC: ROD SIT SAINTED (7) RATIONS (7)
OT: NOTARISED (18) ORDINATES (18)
Score: 18–0 (max 18)

Times up and Ian got it. The nines from NASITEDOR were DERATIONS, ORDINATES, NOTARISED.

Round 2: C I E S P O F N U

Ian: CONFUSE (7)
Katie: POUNCES (7)
DC: FOCUS (5) PIES
Score: 25–7 (max 25)

No CONFUSION for Ian and Katie POUNCES on a max herself to score her first points of the game

Round 3: 5, 3, 1, 6, 9, 10. Target: 579.

Ian: 576. (((9*6)+3)*10)+5+1 (7)
Katie: 576. (((9*6)+3)*10)+5+1 (7)
RR: 579. (((10*6)+4)*9)+3 (10)
Score: 32–14 (max 35)

A gettable six small eludes both players as both are three away with the same method. Rachel twists their multiplications and additions around to come up with the exact solution

Teatime teaser: ULTRAFLY -> ARTFULLY

Round 4: Q T E O D A E H O

Ian: HEATED (6)
Katie: HEATED (6)
DC: HOOTED (6) HEATED (6)
Score: 38–20 (max 41)

The contestants do all they can do in this round as they get the easy to spot max here.

Round 5: T X E A J E U P G

Ian: EXPAT (5)
Katie: PEAT (4)
OT: EXEAT (5) PATEE (5) TAUPE (5)
Score: 43–20 (max 46)

Ian is still maxing the letters round and increases his lead as its just four for Katie

Round 6: 9, 6, 3, 6, 8, 50. Target: 184.

Ian: 184. ((50+9)*3)+8-(6/6) (10)
Katie: 183.
Score: 53–20 (max 56)

Ian keeps his foot on the pedal here as he solves it nicely to take a commanding lead after just six rounds.
DC Guest: Dan reads a letter complaining that his height is a issue when it comes to his job.

Round 7: I O S L H R N E L

Ian: HOLLERS (7)
Katie: HOLLERS (7)
DC: INSHORE (7)
OT: HELLIONS (8)
Score: 60–27 (max 64)

Sevens for all in the studio but the Darren is missed by all
HELLIONS are rowdy or mischievous people, especially children

Round 8: T O Z E O A S Y R

Katie: STOREY (6)
DC: OYSTER (6)
OT: ERSATZ (6) OATERS (6) ORATES (6) RAZOOS (6) ROOTSY (6) SERTAO (6) STAYER (6) YAREST (6)

Ian: 473. (((9*7)-4)*8)+1 (7)

RR: 474. ((9*8)+7)*6 (10)
Score: 73–40 (max 80)

Ian: BROWNIE (7)
Katie: MOWER (5)
DC: EMBOWER (7)
OT: BROMINE (7) WIREMEN (7)
Score: 80–40 (max 87)

Dan expresses disappointment at Ian getting BROWNIE as he wanted to be the one to say it. Ian now has double the points of his opponent as Katie can only see a five.

Round 11: C P A U G E T V I

Ian: CAPTIVE (7)
Katie: VAGUE (5)
DC: TEACUP (6) ACTIVE (6)
Score: 87–40 (max 94)

Ian’s almost home and dry already and discounting a superhuman (two nines and perfect numbers and conundrum) comeback from Katie, Ian has sealed his second win.

Round 12: D A O R L E S A K

Ian: SOAKED (6)
Katie: RELOADS (7)
DC: ORDEALS (7) DALEKS (6)
OT: KRAALED (7) LOADERS (7)
Score: 87–47 (max 101)

And that seals the win for Ian, despite it being in a round that he lost. Nice for Katie though that she can win a round against the champion apterite.

Round 13: T O G E N I S E P

Ian: PONGIEST (8)
Katie: pension
DC: STEEPING (8)
OT: EGESTION (8) EPIGONES (8)
Score: 95–47 (max 109)

More maxing from Ian as he aims to build up a big score…

Round 14: 9, 8, 4, 5, 6, 75. Target: 290.

Ian: 290. ((9*6)+4)*5 (10)
Katie: 290. (75*4)-((6-5)+9) (10)
Score: 105–57 (max 119)

…and an easy numbers game gets him the century. Can he score 115 with a conundrum spot?

Round 15: M I S T E R M A D

No one buzzes. The answer was MIDSTREAM.
Final Score: 105–57 (max 129)

The answer is no but Ian won’t mind as he seals his second win. He has a great chance of being the series first octochamp. Katie seemed really likeable and hopefully enjoyed her appearance on the show.

Jon Callum tomorrow to see if Ian can make it three
