Enjoy the show.

Round 1: D T N E A E R D O

Tim: ordaned
Lewis: treaded
DC: DENOTED (7) REDDEN (6) DEODAR (6)
OT: ADORNED (7) DERATED (7) DONATED (7) TRENDED (7) TRODDEN (7)
Score: 0–0 (max 7)

It's a false start for both contestants as Series 71 sees yet more disallowed words.

Round 2: N U S E D A P G I

Tim: PAUSING (7)
Lewis: GASPED (6)
DC: PAUSED (6) GAUDIES (7)
OT: AGNISED (7) GUINEAS (7) GUINEPS (7) SPADING (7) SPAEING (7) UNIPEDS (7) UNPAGED (7)
Score: 7–0 (max 14)

Tim starts the scoring by spotting one of the many sevens. Interestingly, one of the sevens available here as a maximum was a new word in the ODO that wouldn't have been allowable last series. AGNISED is an archaic word meaning to have recognised.

Round 3: 100, 10, 3, 1, 2, 3. Target: 124.

Tim: 124. 3x10+100-3x2 (10)
Lewis: 124. 2x10+1+3+100 (10)
Score: 17–10 (max 24)

Nice easy numbers here.

Teatime teaser: REALFUSS -> REFUSALS

Round 4: T A M O W E S G E

Tim: GOATEES (7)
Lewis: TAMES (5)
OT: AWESOME (7) GAMETES (7) STOWAGE (7) TOWAGES (7)
Score: 24–10 (max 31)

Another seven and another maximum for Tim.

Round 5: J M R O E O D T A

Tim: DATER (5)
Lewis: MOOTED (6)
DC: MODERATO (8)
Score: 24–16 (max 39)

Lewis pulls six points back here, while DC get the nice darrenic eight.

Round 6: 100, 25, 8, 1, 4, 3. Target: 870.

Tim: 870. 8x100+25x3-4-1 (10)
Lewis: 870. 8x100+25x3-4-1 (10)
Score: 34–26 (max 49)

Another fairly straight forward numbers; ten points for everyone.

Round 7: S H L U O E R F U

Tim: reflush
Lewis: LOSER (5)
DC: FLUSHER (7) FOULER (6)
OT: HOUSEFUL (8)
Score: 34–31 (max 57)

Very unlucky here for Tim, as his effort of reflush is disallowed, but FLUSHER would have been fine. HOUSEFUL is the darrenic eight.

Round 8: X A S O B E N R V

Tim: BRAVES (6)
Lewis: BONERS (6)
DC: BOXERS (6) BRAVOES (7)
OT: BORANES (7)
Score: 40–37 (max 64)

Sixes for both contestants here. DC get one of the two sevens.

Round 9: 75, 5, 3, 3, 4, 2. Target: 709.

Tim: 709. (75-4)x2x5-3/3 (10)
Lewis: 705.
Score: 50–37 (max 74)

Tim's lead is back into double figures again as he pulls off a decent numbers solve.

Teatime teaser: FREEFOND -> REOFFEND

Round 10: N U L I P E S R K

Tim: lupines
Lewis: rupies
OT: SPRINKLE (8) SPUNKIER (8)
Score: 50–37 (max 82)

Two disallowed words again. LUPINE is only in as an adjective under Countdown rules, as the noun LUPIN is listed as North American. RUPEES is the spelling Lewis was looking for, but there's only one E in the selection anyway.

Round 11: G N I O F T R E B

Tim: GOITRE (6)
Lewis: freting
DC: FROGBIT (7)
OT: BONFIRE (7) BORNITE (7) FOREIGN (7) GENITOR (7) TRIGONE (7)
Score: 56–37 (max 89)

Lewis has another disallowed word so Tim extends his lead by six. DC get perhaps the nicest of the sevens available here.

Round 12: T I M U P I D S Q

Tim: STUPID (6)
Lewis: STUPID (6)
Score: 62–43 (max 95)

Both contestants get the darrenic six; they're not STUPID :)

Round 13: T N D O A I R M S

Tim: ROADS (5)
Lewis: TRAINS (6)
DC: MORDANTS (8)
OT: INTRADOS (8) SAINTDOM (8)
Score: 62–49 (max 103)

Tim may be feeling the pressure late on as he struggles a bit here and allows Lewis to close the gap slightly. Lewis still needs to beat him on the numbers and conundrum to win though.

Round 14: 75, 2, 8, 3, 9, 10. Target: 493.

Tim: 491. Mistake in working.
Lewis: -
RR: 493. (75-(2x9+8))x10+3 (10)
Score: 62–49 (max 113)

Both contestants struggle on this numbers - it is quite a difficult one - so Tim's victory is now guaranteed.

Round 15: T R E N D O N C E

No one buzzes. The answer was CONTENDER.
Final Score: 62–49 (max 123)

Neither of the CONTENDERs here spot the conundrum, but a lady in the audience does. Perhaps some slight controversy here, as this conundrum has two answers: CONTENDER and RETCONNED. Presumably the production team weren't aware of that when they set the conundrum. No fault there of course, it must be nigh on impossible to check selections of letters for all ODO words at the moment, but it's interesting to wonder what might have happened if someone had buzzed in and said RETCONNED.

But the conundrum was inconsequential here anyway so no harm done, and Tim will be back tomorrow for his third game. Join James tomorrow to see how he does. I think that will be the last Countdown episode this week due to horse racing, but if you want to readdress the balance of Countdown in your week, there's always Countdown in St Albans this Saturday! It's not too late to confirm your entry, just head along to this thread for details.

Having looked at the definition of LUPIN in my ODE3 and online, it seems as though the LUPINE spelling is North American. Obviously US spellings of UK words aren't allowed, but if it says it's a North American spelling, is that OK since Canada or somewhere might use it? Unless now the rules have changed to disallow US *and* North American spellings.

It was my understanding that the introduction of ODO brought in a new rule saying any words specified as 'US' or 'North American' were disallowed. I could be wrong though. Can anyone who has been on the show this series tell us what it says in the contestant guidelines about this?
