Countdown recap for Monday 23 June 2014.

C1: Champion Andy Naylor (8 wins, 781 points.) An accounts manager from Hendon, one of only three octochamps this series. Clearly the best non apterite player of the series.

C2: Champion Bobby Banerjee (6 wins, 597 points.) A recruitment consultant from Birmingham. Bobby was one of my personal favourite contestants of the series, as he seems like a bit of a ‘cheeky chappie’ and a fun bloke.

DC: Susie Dent and Mark Foster.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Round 1: E I O R G V S D E

Andy: DIVERSE (7)
Bobby: DIVERGES (8)
DC: GRIEVES (7)
OT: OVERSIDE (8)
Score: 0–8 (max 8)

Andy’s DIVERSE is good, but (surprisingly) its Bobby who takes the lead with a nice max word.

Round 2: T F N S O E I J U

Andy: UNITES (6)
Bobby: SOFTEN (6)
DC: OUTJIES (7)
Score: 6–14 (max 15)

Loads of sixes in this round and the contestants each spot one. Susie gets the single seven here.

Round 3: 3, 9, 1, 7, 10, 25. Target: 259.

Andy: 259. (25*10)+9 (10)
Bobby: 259. (25*10)+9 (10)
Score: 16–24 (max 25)

Numbers games don’t come much simpler than this…

Teatime teaser: VINOGROG -> GROOVING

Round 4: R A N T H O E S L

Andy: LOATHERS (8)
Bobby: LOATHERS (8)
DC: RATHOLES (8)
OT: ALTHORNS (8) ENTHRALS (8) ETHANOLS (8)
Score: 24–32 (max 33)

Andy gets his first eight of the game, but the gap remains the same as Bobby gets it too.

Round 5: U E A T S C F T M

Andy: MUTATES (7)
Bobby: FACETS (6)
DC: FAUCETS (7)
OT: FACTUMS (7) TECTUMS (7)
Score: 31–32 (max 40)

Bobby doesn’t notice that he could have inserted a U into his word to get the max, Andy takes advantage and closes the gap to a single point.

Round 6: 6, 3, 7, 7, 2, 4. Target: 481.

Andy: 480. (6*4)*((7+3)*2) (7)
Bobby: 480. (6*4)*((7+3)*2) (7)

Its fairly simple to get one away and both contestants manage it, but getting it spot on is tough and Rachel tells everyone that she’ll “have another look”.

DC Guest: Mark Foster talks about a 10 week health programme he implemented for some of his mates for men’s health magazine and says he mates benefitted from the programme

Rachel has been beavering away for a solution and after the DCG spot….

RR: 481. ((4*6*7)-7)*3-2 (10)
Score: 38–39 (max 50)

Round 7: I E A D P T Q E D

Andy: TAPED (5)
Bobby: peated
DC: EDITED (6) IDEATED (7)
Score: 43–39 (max 57)

Bobby’s word sounds really unlikely and its invalid, giving Andy the lead for the first time.

Round 8: G M R S I O A N E

Andy: ORGANISM (8)
Bobby: ORGANISE (8)
DC: ROAMING (7) MANGERS (7)
OT: MEGARONS (8) MORAINES (8) ROMAINES (8) ROMANISE (8) SMEARING (8)
Score: 51–47 (max 65)

Surprising that DC state they could not spot any other eights when there were five further eights available.

Round 9: 7, 5, 10, 7, 25, 100. Target: 844.

Andy: 843. ((100+25-5)*7)+(10-7) (7)
Bobby: 847.
RR: 844. ((100+10+7)*7)+25 (10)
Score: 58–47 (max 75)

Andy initially declares 841 before quickly correcting himself, I wonder if theres a specific rule stating how long a contestant has to correct his declaration if he declares wrong. Anyhow, he’s within one and takes his lead to 11 points.

For the second time today Rachel fails to spot the solution in the time and needs the advert break before displaying her skills.

Teatime teaser: NICEEARS -> INCREASE

Round 10: G M P D I O A L I

Andy: DIPLOMA (7)
Bobby: podial
DC: DIPLOMA (7)
Score: 65–47 (max 82)

Bobby’s risky word is irrelevant as Andy spots the Darrenic seven to icrease his lead to 18 points

Round 11: S V R W E O A E T

Andy: OVEREATS (8)
Bobby: WEAVERS (7)
DC: SWEATER (7)
OT: OVERAWES (8)
Score: 73–47 (max 90)

Andy is turning it on now with another eight, it looks like the higher seed is going to advance now…

Round 12: N L D S I O U E O

Andy: DELUSION (8)
Bobby: SOLENOID (8)
DC: NOODLES (7) UNSOILED (8)
OT: EIDOLONS (8) NODULOSE (8) UNLOOSED (8)
Score: 81–55 (max 98)

Very nice eight from Bobby. Andy’s more standard eight gets him the points as well.
NODULOSE refers to having not got enough sleep (joking).

Round 13: E C U M O R I X E

Andy: CURIO (5)
Bobby: REMIX (5)
DC: MOXIE (5)
OT: EXCIMER (7)
Score: 86–60 (max 105)

Andy seals his place in the semis with a tactical five vowel selection…

Round 14: 3, 9, 7, 75, 25, 50. Target: 236.

Andy: 235.
Bobby: 236. (75*3)+((50/25)+9) (10)
Score: 86–70 (max 115)

…but Bobby ensures a closer final score with a fine solve on the final numbers game.

Round 15: U N C L E H O T I

No one buzzes. The answer was TOUCHLINE.
Final Score: 86–70 (max 125)

Andy proved during his octochamp run that he has excellent skills for a non-apterite and this win takes him through to a match with Samir Pilica on Thursday. While Samir will be favourite, Andy has displayed some evidence that he may have a genuine chance of scoring the upset.
Bobby finishes by asking Nick to hook him up with Alan Sugar business-wise.

Tomorrow it’s a rematch of one of the best games of the series as Neil Green plays Sean Fletcher, should be a good one, join Callum to see if Neil can get his revenge over his conqueror in the heats
